As someone who used drugs (mostly weed and alcohol) in high school, peer pressure was never a factor whatsoever. No one forced me to, or told me I wouldn't be cool or whatever the myths are. I did them because I was bored and angry, my parents didn't understand me and girls didn't like me. Pretty much what is true for every teenage boy.

There's also the possibility that kids that want to get into drugs seek out peers that already are.

/anti-drug brochures in the 3rd grade made me really want to try hallucinogens.

I started doing drugs because I was really depressed and got beaten a lot at school and didn't get good grades so I couldn't afford to go to college without getting into massive debt.

My parents were divorced and they both drank a lot so I didn't have anyone to help me with the college process and my family was really poor so I couldn't afford counseling or anything.

So, I was going to commit suicide but I started doing drugs instead.

If your school just flat out doesn't challenge you then you're looking for something more interesting to do. For me it was girls and drugs. If paying half attention in class and chasing girls and a bit of casual drug use is plenty for a student to succeed, then that is what they will do.

That's why I did it. It wasn't stress; the school just sucked because it wasn't just filled with teens, but rednecks pretending they were MTV super cool teens. Oh, I could go all Ren Hoek on them (and did more than once) but weed is good. Started when I was 14.

I like cooking dinner with weed. I drink less and sleep light. Getting high by smoking is just too much for me unless I have absolutely nothing to do.

Peer pressure isn't other kids telling you 'all the cool people [blank]', it's the simple act of other kids doing [blank] when they figure out it's a good way to beat the bored/angsty/misunderstood thing.

So, yes, it probably WAS some form of peer pressure / social programming / etc.

I took drugs, not because of peer pressure or because school sucks. I took them because it felt good, just like you did. All the reasons stated are excuses, plain and simple. Survey, pundant, or wizard, all else is is to avoid saying you're not in control.

So is it all that surprising that kids would see no problem with taking drugs to get through a rough day? we're a pill popping culture. makes sense that attitude would filter down to the kids.

Every hour or so? Try a couple times every commercial break. There are pills for just about anything. Pills to help people get it up, make it bigger, make it last longer, make it hurt less. There are pills to help you sleep, to help you stay awake, help you concentrate, help you relax. Really, at this point, there's only one thing I can think of for which there isn't a convenient pill: Personal Responsibility.

I took the PSAT all high, got the highest score in the school, and managed to keep doing the same until I ended up as a National Merit Finalist with a full academic scholarship. High school was miserable, home life was not much better, parents were totally uninvolved. The drugs and alcohol helped cushion the environment until I could escape to college and make my own life.

I stopped drinking because alcohol is a depressant, and if you don't drink regularly, you don't have much head for it anyway. Don't do drugs anymore because a) I have kids and b) they're illegal (drugs, not kids) and my SO and I both have jobs that would Frown On Those Shenanigans.

But when I retire? Definitely taking up the smoking again if at all possible.

Yeah it has nothing to do with peer pressure.. smoking weed is a logical step to reduce stress levels for someone who doesn't already do it.

Not to mention that the availibility of your first joint (which you instinctly identified as being a good thing) made it hard to resist. Everywhere you look, strangers whom you trust implicitly were just throwing the stuff to anyone who'd smoke it.. Not a kid with it in sight.. there is literally NO kids in anyone's peer group that do it.

When will they learn that we tried it entirely independant of all of society, liked it, and stuck with it, in a vacuum, where no one could comment on whether it was good or bad.

Because I am most in control when I hand the steering wheel off to an illegal drug to make my decisions for me. I never have stress regarding searches, or my parents noticing that I'm trying not to grin like an idiot as I head straight for the bedroom.

There is no stress in learning that friends died or were arrested in drug- or alcohol-related incidents, nor stress regarding what an outstanding citizen I myself am becoming with the assistance of a drug that I let take control of me and make my decisions for me.

I'm so busy being a cool rebel that I'm blind to the reality that is my life. Did you know older people smoke too? I think that is so cool.. I'm like part of a rebel movement. I dunno' what to do as part of that movement, but I know I just gotta' tout the line and say how safe it is, and maybe talk about the dangers of alcohol. I miss the point, but that IS the point of using mind-altering substances.. It's not permanent you know.. pot doesn't do damage, it just prohibits me from learning what I need to know about life, regarding coping skills and stuff.

I trust pot to let me make good solid decisions regarding when it's not a good idea to drive, or simply how I view life itself.

My stress all comes from school and I'm stressing because I don't have a developed sense of responsibility or self-control that permits me to learn how to function in society and benefit from it. I'm stressing because I can't develop those things while stoned.

In fact I'm killing myself over the fact that I was too stoned and didn't bother to wear protection and am now pregnant and have an STD. If I don't kill myself I'd have to explain to mom and dad that I am a complete and utter failure in their eyes. Maybe if I wasn't stoned, I'd own up and take responsibility for my mistakes, because I'd be able to cope with it because I'd have stress coping skills that didn't involve partying and blowing it all off with a joint and alcohol.

If it wasn't for SCHOOL and the stress it caused, I might never have gone this way in an effort to releive stress.

I love my pot and think it should not only be legal, but availible to underaged children because at 13 we know everything there is to know about the world. I am mature enough to make the decision to let pot live my life for me.. Screw making intelligent, informed decisions, or having control over my own life.. my pot knows what's best for me.

Shhesh, you guys are way too high strung and need to chill, because I can't cope with having a mirror of my life put into my face because it's not the image that pot prepares me for. There's no way I can sit and digest what you're saying, or absorb anything that makes sense to me, because I'm a rebel, and doing pot like nobody else does because I'm different and am deaf to everything you say. I refuse to think about it because I am unable to cope with reality..

I'm unable to cope, and so I don't, I get high instead. It's a good thing that eating dog shiat doesn't provide you with a mental escape or I'm run around with my tongue up my dog's ass.

I know exactly what you mean. My high school was pathetic, didn't show up half the time and still got A's. That's not because I was smart, it was because our AP chemistry teacher had a bachelors degree is Personal Fitness. Its because our school didn't take any action when I missed class. or skipped class to not go to the office because I skipped class. Basically my school was so lax on administrative stuff that I could do whatever I wanted, including smoking a lot of weed on and off campus.
