I understand a "dress" code. Keeps kids from wearing clothing that is inappropriate for school. But hair is different. You can't have "inappropriate" hair, just hair that isn't considered fashionable by some. Not the school's business.

It's funny, the most conservative people are against long hair.
Yet, if we study history, short hair is a recent phenomenon (1600s on). Long hair was the symbol of the Aristocracy; short hair was symbolic of the Peasants, particularly peasants involved in uprisings (hence "Roundheads" or "Croppies").

Short hair did not come into mainstream vogue until the industrial revolution (it was a safety issue).

I have long hair. I have had long hair for close to 20 years. It's never cost me a job that I really wanted anyway. (It would have cost me one, but by the time the manager got around to their ludicrous "dress code", I had already decided to reject the offer on general principles). When I get hassled, it's usually Conservatives (Get a haircut). It really freaks them out when I say, "You know, my favorite picture of Jesus is the one where he has the crew cut." It usually sails right over their heads. But then again, what doesn't.

Can people become so broken that truths of how they are being screwed do not "set them free" but instead further demoralize them? Has such a demoralization happened in the United States?

Do some totalitarians actually want us to hear how we have been screwed because they know that humiliating passivity in the face of obvious oppression will demoralize us even further?

What forces have created a demoralized, passive, dis-couraged U.S. population?

Can anything be done to turn this around?

This.

I haven't had more than a trim job since I was a senior in high school (nearly 10 long years ago now...) My reasons are mostly those that are listed above. My job didn't even question it when I showed up to my interview with long hair...but then I keep it neatly tied back at all times. Oh, and I'm in an engineering firm specializing in expert consulting.

Long hair used to be a sign of bravery...warriors would wear their hair long as a challenge to their enemies: "I'm so much better than you that I am willing to give you a free hand-hold on my head...bet you can't take advantage of it, pussy."

Conservatives need to get over themselves. The First Amendment is for everyone, not just Bible-thumping Flag-Wavers.

Halfof33,
Thank you for your numerous replies. It entertains me to no end to see that you consider me a child as well as a douchenozzle, and I thought I'd reply again to tell me just how happy you've made me. I feel bad that you have issues coming to terms with your male pattern baldness, to the point where you even strike out against your defenseless pizza delivery "boy" who has long hair.

It always makes me happy to see that those currently heading up "Bullshiat Inc." are doing well for themselves. I'm glad to see that the stench hasn't completely emptied out your staff, and that in fact you seem to be doing quite well with the work this time around. Please send my regards to the people that haven't quit yet, because obviously they're worth some respect. I do have some questions in regards to your firing tactics, though. Do you prefer the right or the left? Is there a proper way to hold on? And do you prefer quick releases or do you hold onto them for as long as possible before letting them go?

Waiting impatiently for your reply,
Me.

I realize this. My point is that the fact that it happened in Texas is irrelevant to the stupidity of this principal's actions.

Jakevol2: Texas has bigger problems with their schools than dress codes.

Now THIS I will agree with. The TX State Board of Education is not made up entirely of morons... but they do have the majority. Which is terrifying.

halfof33: Deivian: who fires you? Please tell me, because I want to see how big you build yourself up before it all comes crashing down. The only reason I responded to you is because you blatently attacked people

"Fires me." That is a good question. I suppose if I were to study the plan of operation, there might be some conceivable way of forcing me to sell my ownership interest.

Just kidding! There is no way to do that! Ha!

Now, child, perhaps you should go back and review the thread. You may wish to note that the programmer in question was commenting somewhat disdainfully about the mere "receptionist." That was unfortunate.

Actually I wasn't commenting disdainfully about receptionist. He's in college so his gig works out for him cause he gets to spend a lot of time studying. In fact the reason he's in college is so he doesn't have to be a receptionist. Nobody says "When I grow up I want to be a receptionist." There are times when it's a good idea, but most intelligent people don't make it a goal.

What you missed was the fact that there are many high paying jobs that don't require short hair and conservative dress. I know two people who own successful businesses that typically wear jeans and a t shirt to work and consider it to one of the benefits of being the owner. One has long hair and the other shaves his head cause he's mostly bald.

A receptionist on the other hand has to dress the part. It sucks, but it's better than wearing a McUniform or stocking shelves and it'll pay the bills till you get out of college.

I'll agree that you shouldn't judge people because their current job doesn't require a lot of training, education or thought.

Good points. I've seen a few people who actively promote the fact that they've had many successes and have long hair. Take for instance the nice casinos that Native Americans have popping up all over the US...they're laughing at people who look down on those with long hair because they're taking all the money for themselves.

You can have inappropriate hair. When I was in high school, the varsity boy's swim team shaved dicks into the incoming guy's hair as part of a hazing ceremony. They were supposed to wear their hair like that for a week or something before it's shaved entirely for the first meet. It was a yearly tradition, but the dicks were a new thing and the school leaned on the coach about it so that the shaving tradition was dropped altogether.

Thank you to everyone who has come on defending long hair on men! My deep thanks to you! My husband has long hair (and his hair is thick and shiny and really awesome). His hair is also really well taken care of, washed regularly and brushed. I happen to find longer hair on guys attractive, so long as it's taken care of.

I hate buzz cuts on boys, especially when I see the whole family having them because it just makes me think that the parents take them in all at once and don't give them a choice. My son doesn't have a buzz cut. It'll be kept at a longer boy's length (no bowl cuts, but definitely a boy) until he actually cares enough to decide what he wants. If by then he wants a buzz cut or to shave his head, it's his choice. For now, his hair doesn't grow fast enough to have more than like 2 or 3 haircuts a year.

I'd take a pay cut to work from home. Hell, the place I'm at now would save money if they didn't have to provide an office, parking, and free public transit for me. Of course faster servers so I didn't have to spend as much time waiting would help.

For all that Merlot (Penfold's from Australia was always the best-recovered alkie speaking here) your comments are actually pretty sober.

We are no longer the land of the free and the home of the brave: we've become the land of the whiner and the victim. And the biggest whiners and victims seem to come from the party that used to extol rugged individualism.

Instead of allowing people to live their own lives and going our own way, we've decided to take those who live differently as a personal insult instead of minding our own goddamn business. I don't know what's happened to us either.
