She must be in a different IT industry than I am.

Well she's in Network ops, which has managed to hold on to the last vestiges of the "dot com" culture near as I can tell (she was a Millionaire on Paper several times during the Dot Com Boom, but unlike her collegues was smart enough not to actually spend any of it until it actually vested)

Tavernknight: This is nothing new. When I was in high school we had a similar issue with the dress code and we organized a student protest. We had a school wide walkout. There were news cameras and everything. We didn't get them to drop the long hair for boys part but they did make some concessions to us and totally dropped the idea of wearing school uniforms.

Oh and the Texas haters can suck on my gun.

Our school banned backpacks, bags, and jackets. Post-Columbine. Carrying stacks of textbooks and notebooks and folders cause you can't make it to your locker in between classes = undesirable and stupid.

So some kids got creative (Radio Flyer wagon was my favorite). I used one of those farmer's market shopping carts and myself, my brother, and a few classmates handed out flyers with the superintendent's email on 'em.

The Icelander: wpmulligan: They say the dress code prepares students for a business-orientated society where appropriate dress is critical.

Long hair does tend to get caught in machinery.

I knew a machinist who had hair down to the middle of his back, he'd be standing next to the CNC Horizontal Mill, his hair brushing against the spindle as it spun

amazed it never got ripped out of his head

and he was that shifts safety man

No one is going to mention this gem from the comments?

What does hair have to do with education? Why should it stand in the way of a child learning? I could understand if it was out of line, like a mohawk or spikes. But come on, seriously? This is way out of line for the school district. This is discrimination and alienating the child for something as small as his hair.

That 1970s Partridge family fluff is fine, but NO SPIKES!

At least in Mesquite when the police officer says "step out of the car" he doesn't mean "Step out of view of the camera so I can whoop your ass and say you were resisting arrest"

THIS. Truer words were never spoken. Most places in Texas don't care. I went to the tiny rural school in the 70's & had hair down to my shoulders. There was no hair code or dress code, and nobody cared. However, back then if you didn't dip snuff they thought you were gay.

I think you just made The Ninj's case for him. The South does such a whole lot of ass. Too many Bible thumpers for there to be any good strip clubs, which as everyone know's is my benchmark for an enlightened culture.

FTFA: "They say the dress code prepares students for a business-orientated society where appropriate dress is critical."

As I sit here in my office overlooking the state capitol, I wonder if I would be more successful if I dressed more business like than my usual jeans, T-shirt and hair down to my shoulders. I think about the guy working here wearing the shirt and tie with dress pants and short hair. If I dressed more like he does I could have a job as a receptionist just like he does. I guess I'll have to settle for being a programmer.

My point being is that the lady is pissed off her kid is in the library all day for hair that violates school policy.

Yet, she has no answer when asked why not trim the kids hair (off the collar not below the ear)

I just can't see a solution to her problem.

If it's like Vermont, it's because they're taxed differently.

not that I'm defending Texas or anything. The only good thing about Texas is that it keeps most of the Texans in one spot so it's easier to avoid them. I wish they would secede like they always threaten to; and then enforce strict border controls, no one in, no one out.

I went to elementary school in the 80s and 90s, everyone had hair like that. It was the kid who came to school with a buzz cut that caused the sensation. 1st grade, the first day back from Easter vacation, Ramone saw Terry out the window and yelled to the rest of us, "Guys! Terry's bald!" We kept trying to touch his skull all week.

My brother-in-law's girlfriend's 12 year old son has a mohawk, it looks goofy because he's a skinny little guy with glasses, but he loves it, so whatever. My 300lb mother-in-law refuses to be seen in public with the kid because she thinks people stare. They do, but not at him.

austerity101: Yes, because people in business never have or have had longer hair. Ever.

Piss off, school. It's a pretty invalid assumption you make that school is for preparing kids for the business world. It's pre-kindergarten, fercrissakes, not an associate's degree in business management. And even if you end up working in a company, companies have enormously wide variations in dress codes.

IamTomJoad: the mother was on Fox and Friends pissed that her kid was in the library all day.

When asked if she was going to cut the kids hair (which by the way doesn't need to be cut but, trimmed)so he could go back to class.

She said "No"

If only there was some solution to this vexing problem.

I saw that, it was pretty funny. (Here it is on the Internets (new window)) This mom is a freaking idiot. I got nothing against the kid's hair (it's cute), but this mom is a attention whoring moran.

It really is a good gig. I get a nice window office. I make more than my boss, even after you count benefits. I have very little stress. Even in "this economy" I still get contacted by at least 2 headhunters a week. I can work just about anywhere I want. So far this week I've been contacted about a job in NYC and one in the L.A. area. I'll probably interview for the one in NYC cause they're offering to fly me out there and I have a friend and some relatives there, so I'll make a mini vacation out of it. (I did that twice last year) If they offer me enough money I'll take the job, if not I get a free vacation.

So what do you do?
