Well there is the solar wind. While it won't make you feel any colder, it'll bombard you with highly energetic ions and high energy radiation that will do pretty nasty things to you.

Living in the Deep South, we may not have to deal with deep freezes, but we get the beloved humidity. With massive weatherizing, you get lots of indoor mold and rot. There are at least 25 houses in my neighborhood that were built later than 2002. Two of these newer homes are already replacing windows because of trapped moisture rotting the frames. I love the revitalization, but watching some of the unintended consequences, I think I'll keep my older metal frame windows.

Shockingly, this is a solved problem. If you're going to seal your house up so tight no air gets in or out, you'll be wanting a heat recovery ventilator. They transfer heat from the exhaust air into the incoming air, allowing you to get fresh air without losing all of the heat you're trying to retain.

Also, if your house is so poorly-designed it was relying on leaks for ventilation, you might want to look into some updating anyway.

I would think in the South, home improvements would be a lot more about providing proper ventilation and demoisturizing than about insulation for the 2 months of sub 50 temperatures. You gain a lot more reducing the days of the year that you need an AC.

Nope, thats not an energy recovery ventilator. Or even a HEPA filter.

Ionic purifiers are ripoffs and ozone is a very dangerous atmospheric contaminant.

There are two ways to properly handle this if you live in a very tight well insulated home ( like me ).

1) Fresh air intake with damper connected to your furnace air return

2) Heat Recovery Ventilator (HRV) with proper room ventilation.

Either way works and delivers fresh conditioned air to all rooms in your house assuming of course that you use a forced air furnace.

/R60 ceillling and R35 walls will do that.

Build tight, ventilate right.

Anyone who tells you different is a know-nothing.

It's called an ERV, look into it.

It is, and also more attic insulation to keep the heat out. But builders order windows en masse, and get the ones rated for polar winters. Then the painters and new owners paint over the weep holes, and voila! Lots of wood rot, and bay windows falling out.

To me, if professional growers are staking their freedom on a product you cant get a better endorsement.

This. There is no one "weatherizing" process. There is only Zuul... um... err... what I mean to say is that getting one's home in shape for the local climate is going to be a drastically different process depending on where exactly that home is.

Ozone kills odours. That's why it's working. Ozone is terrible for everything else.

If you really want clean air in your house you need proper ventilation and something like a whole house Hepa air filter and Honeywell IAQ system.

Ozone is great for oxidizing things. Which is why it "kills" germs, destroys viruses, "neutralizes" odors. It will also damage the mucous membranes in your respiratory system. Much like intense UV light, its just indiscriminately destroying things.

Would you install an intense UV light in your living room? No.

I'm not going to go into taking advice from people discussing their illegal pursuits on an internet forum. At any rate, their problem is completely different from yours. They're just trying to remove odor. They're not trying to treat air for habitable environments.

This. A ventilation fan doesn't use a terrific amount of electricity. A small photo voltaic panel could probably provide just fine. Hell, you probably wouldn't even need to use a battery. Just ventilate during the day.

Ionic Air Purifies were busted when Consumer Reports tested the Sharper Image "Ionic Breeze". It had no significant effect on tiny allergens or chemicals (formaldehyde being the primary concern) in the air. It's very efficient at making large smoke particles come out of the air so it makes an impressive demonstration, but except for that, no air cleaning- but it does make a small amount of ozone, which is a severe irritant.

SI sued CR for libel, the courts found it baseless because CR was factually correct all around and SI's claims were snake oil.

SI tried to "correct" the situation by making a "low ozone" model, but couldn't make it actually clean the air; the principle it was based upon was scientifically invalid. They ended up giving out tons of refunds to people who bought them, and eventually went bankrupt. The IB was their cornerstone product!

Ozone, an active, unstable form of oxygen (O3 instead of O2) is GREAT for destroying odors. It literally destroys them, eager to donate an oxygen atom to oxidize an airborne molecule it finds into something less smelly. Very effective treatment for the exhaust air for pot growers who don't want the place to be smelled. But, you DON'T want to breathe ozone before it decays back into O2. It's harmful. In fact it's harmful to plants too, the ozone's only added on air ventilated out, not directly into the plant room.

DNRTFA. A few plants can do wonders for indoor air quality.

As an HVAC engineer living in Florida (humid), I would not recommend an ERV as a standalone pressurization or ventilator. They do not get cold enough without the help of a cooling coil to remove latent (wet) energy.
Most building codes do not require mechanically ventilating residential construction. Simply running a small duct from an outdoor air source to your air handler's return duct should be enough for most houses.

My home is heated via a natural gas well on my property. It's nice not having a heating bill. :)
