So no Aussies on fark anymore?

Australians need to unite on this.

There are two issues that currently need addressing:

Firsly, this bullshiat of a filter is being foisted on us despite nationwide condemnation. We'll be joining the likes of China, Iran, etc, except in this case it won't be of a corrupt, power-hungry, despotic regime enforcing the change, it'll be a massively misguided ideology brought about by one single politician who doesn't understand a single damn thing about technology and it's role in current day life.

Secondly, we STILL don't have a rating system in line with every single other form of entertainment. We still only have a maximum rating of MA15 on games in Australia. This means that if something is released as R18 anywhere in the world it's banned in Australia. For the first time ever we've got the oppurtunity to speak up:

http://ag.gov.au/www/agd/agd.nsf/Page/Consultationsreformsandreviews_AnR18+Clas s ificationforComputerGames-PublicConsultation
(new window)

Above is a link to a public consultation on the introduction of an R18+ rating option for games in Australia. If you take your gaming seriously, submit something. Don't use form letters, they're ignored by 'standard responses'. Actually write something and add a few off-topic issues. Someone has to read these then and every bit counts.

Double plus good.

Haha. I doubt that. They make delete buttons for a reason.

I propose a new title for Mr. Conroy, the "plusgood minicomm."

Bernard Keane's guide to writing to Ministers - Crikey.com.au (new window)

This article isn't entirely correct (I know for a fact that they've a few things regarding they way they handle correspondence) but essentially he has the right idea. If you clog the system up enough it gets noticed.

'great, glorious success' sounds suspiciously like a North Korean slogan. Hmmmmmm...

FTFA: to protect our children and keep Australia safe

Give it up, Aussies. Once that phrase has entered into a legislator's standard lexicon, it's impossible to undo. Anyone attempting to reverse the net filtering now will be seen as light on child molesters and into porn.

You not only lost your right to free speech with this, but also the right to call the UK a Nanny State anymore. You guys totally take the cake on that phrase now.

brigid_fitch: but also the right to call the UK a Nanny State anymore.

I think you'll find it's mostly Americans that refer to the UK as the nanny state. Most Australians will just sympathies.

But i digress...

2009-12-17 09:32:31 AM
Sympathise rather.

"Harmful online content, which according to newspolls is linked to up to 87% of childhood depression"

Oh yeah, I'm totally bummed out because of "online content."

The fact that our backyard is a feral wasteland populated by vicious pack animals, that daddy hasn't returned from a four-year boozefest and thinks it's funny to call me Sheila, and mommy looks like a baked leather cane toad and has a personality to match has nothing to do with it.

I'm still in awe over this, that it's actually being done. Very sad to see Australia go in this direction.

Holy Cr@p! If this happened in the USA I would SERIOUSLY consider it time to break out the rifles!

Welcome to my personal list of backward-a$$ed, shiathole countries, Australia.

PS. In case you have not noticed, this stuff has been publicly accessible for decades with no real problems.

Does this mean abbywinters.com won't be available in the US anymore? The site is hosted in Australia...which leads me to my next thought..

You would think in a country that has spiders that eat birds, jellyfish that kill you in under 45 seconds and Dune style dust storms, the Aussies wouldn't be such pussies about the internet.

I think TFA is sarcasm but I'll need a second opinion.

Please start policing the haircuts too. You're falling behind North Korea (new window).

I'm confused. You're against censorship yet you censor yourself? You sensor "crap" but not "shiat"?

Seems a bit ass-backwards. Wait, sorry...backward-assed.

Private site has it's own rules and I respect them. Unlike Aussies, I CAN go to a site where I can swear all I want.

I just hope the USA gets some net neutrality laws passed before OUR internet access is castrated by mega corps.

ACTA coming up soon... which doesn't require approval of congress due to it being a "trade agreement". However, the EU and other countries aren't happy with the Industries Influence on the regulations and Obama admin now says they see no need to have global cooperation on it.
ACTA = end of fark.

It can't possible be true & the idiot who wrote the article sounds like a complete fool.
