How dare those "people" outside of our borders have their own cinematic tastes, and then expressed those tastes via monetary means. The gall.

As is the tradition on Fark, the chances are that Subby hasn't even seen the film.

Indignant rage to follow from others who somehow know the film is crap and therefore will not see it....

Haven't seen this movie, so I can't give it a fair shake. But from the previews and casting, looked like one I'd rather Red Box than go shell out 7 bucks for.

I figured out that there really is no artistic justice in the movie world anymore when I realized that this movie:

upload.wikimedia.org

Despite being touted as the worst movie of the year by many critics and movie goers grossed over $70 million in the U.S. and over $113 million world wide.

"...You suck, world"

and blow and explode and shake and collapse ... at least that's what the trailer told me. Figure I'll catch it on a TNT run sometime around 2013.

I saw it... and it was just lots of stuff falling down.

While I can say the movie stank, had huge gaping plot holes, and poor character development and choices... The movie did nto seriously deserve its number 3 place.

I however did shell out my 10 bucks and that is all that matters, I have no right to criticize.

:(

So, if I have the numbers right, Hollywood is really making these movies for the countries outside of the United States. I have no problem with this, I kind of wanted to see this movie because I can enjoy a mindless cgi movie. I just find it funny that people will come on here and blame "mindless Americans" for the "drivel" that is being produced. Now, of course more people live in the rest of the world than in the United States, I'm just asking for the rest of the world to own up to the fact that they too enjoy mindless cgi movies.

I liked UP. Maybe because I'm in my 40's and got the message, but overall, UP was better than most of the summer releases.

They are talking about making a TV series instead of a sequel.

It would focus on a group of survivors on an island or something like that.

"The plan is that it is 2013 and it's about what happens after the disaster," Emmerich told EW while walking the red carpet for the 2012 premiere Tuesday. "It is about the resettling of Earth. That is very, very fascinating. (2012 writer/producer) Harald Kloser and I came up with the idea and we have the luxury of having a producer on the film who is a big TV producer, Mark Gordon. We said to Mark, 'Why don't you do a TV show that picks up where the movie leaves off and call it 2013?' I think it will focus on a group of people who survived but not on the boats ... maybe they were on a piece of land that was spared or one that became an island in the process of the crust moving. There are so many possibilities of what they could do and I'd be excited to watch it."

2009-12-17 09:49:20 AM
I saw it, and parts I actually liked. The problem it had was it just didn't rip off other disaster movies, but it ripped off from itself. How many times can a person be chased by cracking earth before you go, oh, please ...

It was also about 40 minutes too long. I did enjoy the Russian mob boss, and seeing Yellowstone explode was spectacular.

This.

However, if anyone "blames Americans for mindless drivel" remind them that, oh, upwards of 50% (if not 95%) of their daily entertainment intake comes from America, no matter what country they are from. And regardless of what these foreigners say, they and everyone around them are anxiously awaiting what America is going to put out next. So, unless they are some rare art-house gem that largely watches non-US movies/music/TV, they are hypocrites and completely full of shiat.

It would be nice, however, if there was another entertainment hub on the planet. You know, just so American culture isn't the only culture being pumped into every home worldwide day and night. Different language, cultural references, ways of seeing, storytelling and marketing would be a nice change. Unfortunately, even the largest film producing countries only put out a few big-budget films per year. So I have to agree with subby's sentiment. The world does suck.

I must go on record as saying that I love retarded disaster movies. That one (two?) with the asteroids about to hit the Earth? Loved 'em! Day After Tomorrow? Fark yeah! I especially loved the cliche homeless black guy with the dog.

I never see them in the theater though. I don't love them that much.

And you don't use your money to vote for good movies (or ones you like),

Then people who use their money to vote for crap-movies win.

Get out of your mom's basement and go vote you losers, the anime-pron will be there when you get back.

I'm too lazy to see if anyone said this before, but movies like this are successful globally because they translate very well in other languages. Most of the drama is visually communicated, so even if the dubbing or subtitles are poorly done (and they often are), foreign audiences will still catch 90% of the intended drama because most of it is compacted into the visual spectacle of everything being blown apart.

It's practically written in a universal language. The dialogue is secondary in a movie like 2012.

3. Transformers 2
4. 2012
5. Up (soon to be New Moon)

What J said. $12.50 of that $711M is mine, and happily so. I went wanting to see stuff get blown up good and maybe have a laugh or two, and the movie delivered. Now, not to get all serious or noting, but... IIRC most of the destruction took place within these United States, and yeah part of me wonders if some of the foreign audiences were cheering that on? Don't get me wrong: when Las Vegas took it on the chin, I was smiling.

In one of the many other 2012 threads, some wit opined that seeing our intrepid heroes fly away from a crumbling runway was GREAT once, pretty nifty the second time, but repetitiously ridiculous on the third go'round. Ebert said about the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie: "There's a nice little 90-minute B movie trapped inside the 143 minutes of [this] movie that charms the audience and then outstays its welcome." While I enjoyed 2012, I did feel the same.

Maybe AI is the best show and maybe MD is the best food. Opinions are just opinions after all when it comes down to it. Yours is no better then the next. So if the more people like something then you do, maybe it is you that is in the wrong.

The quote on the poster doesn't make any sense. Not many people thought SOAP was going to be good at all. In fact the whole concept was so ridiculous is why it got any attention in the first place. No one thought it was going to be a blockbuster movie.

As far as 2012, I think it's amusing that so many people know it's the end of the Mayan calendar but barely know a thing about Mayans.

What he said. It's a disaster film. The 1970s were filled with them. This one just had better FX. And it made me talk for the first in a theater when President Danny Glover was addressing the nation and I had to say, "I'm too old for this shiat".
