But the city also approved two 15-minute parking spaces in front of Pizza King on Main Street, so there's that.

Can we start charging smokers who just throw their butts on the ground for littering?

I find it highly unlikely that people deliberately come up to you and "smoke in your face", so if this IS happening, it is more likely self-inflicted, so stop putting yourself in the faces of smokers.

If you can't handle a bit of cigarette smoke in the open air, then I assume you can't handle car exhaust, either. Right? I mean, you are walking down the sidewalk and 10s or 100s of cars are right there next to you putting exhaust in your face.

/I do agree about butts, and think any smoker who does this should be nailed with a fine for littering

Stop acting like a baby. I highly doubt smokers are walking up to you and blowing smoke in your face.

Tossing butts on the ground is a littering issue, not a smoking issue. Anyone who throws a butt on the ground is just as much of a douchebag as the guy who litters gum wrappers.

Did you know it's against the law to smoke in a car in California if there is a kid in the car with you? I don't smoke but I totally did not know about this law.

2009-12-17 03:46:56 AM
The City of Chicago outlawed smoking in its parks. They did not even make the littering argument (which is already illegal), instead, going straight for the health hazard to others argument. Despite being in a well ventilated area (outside) and 100 feet from anyone if caught you face a hefty fine. It is not really enforced though because the CPD has more important things to do.

This anti-smoking stuff has gotten to crazy silly levels. Come on. No smoking in bars (or for that matter any public establishment)?

Wonder when they will be banning cars on the streets surrounding the park.. cell phones and squalling crotch fruit in the park.. etc etc and on and on.

Nothing is worse than the "I'm allergic to smoke!" crowd.

OK, you may not like it. But allergies? Your body is creating excessive white blood cells because of cigarette smoke? No, it's an irritant and you may dislike it, but don't go around saying that it's going to make your windpipes close up and you'll have to bust out your epi-pen.

The_Sponge: I highly doubt smokers are walking up to you and blowing smoke in your face.

I've had a smoker blow smoke in my face before. Granted most smokers aren't dicks like that.

I have lots of friends that smoke and they try as hard as they can to blow the smoke away from me... most of the other smokers I've come across do the same.

Only once has a smoker blown smoke in my face, and it was when there was a fire alarm during a dance at college. We all had to file outside into a very small area (because there was a bottleneck and people wouldn't move forward) and were waiting for the alarm to stop. There were 2 girls smoking right next to me, and so I asked them (very nicely, I promise) if she would please stop smoking or move further out of the group because I had been having some asthma problems that day the the friend I was with also had asthma. (smoking is a major trigger for my asthma)
The girl looked at me with a snotty face and blew smoke right in my face.

That was the first time and only time that I've ever had the urge to put out someone's cigarette in their eye... But, I didn't. I just left and made a mental note that if that girl ever needed my help with anything not to do it.

/still thinks there should be smoking areas.. but that one biatch can diaf

Smoking can be a trigger for asthma... "Secondhand smoke can trigger asthma episodes and increase the severity of attacks." from http://www.epa.gov/asthma/shs.html

/doesn't have a problem with most smokers either

Hi, I'm allergic to tobacco. I get hives, and sometimes my throat closes up. Then there's the chance of me getting an asthma attack from the smoke itself. No need to carry an epi-pen, I just have no social life.

/mom didn't stop smoking around me, wondered why I was always a sickly child

2009-12-17 04:20:37 AM
I quietly tolerated complaints about my cigarette smoke while smoking in a smoking area, outside, in a breeze that blew the smoke away from the complainants.

But, not anymore.

The next one that thanks me for polluting their air is going to get told to shove it up their arse. If it keeps up, I'll dig out one of my old pipes and pack it with some of this gawd awful, stinky, strong pipe tobacco and stand around acting like a smoke stack.

GAT_00: Can we start charging smokers who just throw their butts on the ground for littering?

I thought we always could? In Cali you can get a ticket for throwing a butt out of a car window (or at least you could when i was ticketed for it) because it's a fire hazard. But this other stuff?

If you come into the city where I live from the southern interstate, you can see a dome shaped orange/yellow haze covering the area from several miles away. We have air advisories where people with asthma and other respiratory problems are warned about staying indoors. I'm just not that concerned about a few cigarettes worth of air pollution in a very well ventilated area like a park.

I wasn't going to mention that.. but I did have an asthma attack after she did that. It was a minor one, and I had my inhaler and had removed myself from the irritant... so I was fine. Had I not had my inhaler it could have been worse. Are you really trying to defend her?

Yeah... I really don't get that part of it at all. At least give them a smoking section or something. Never leave it up to peers to reinforce.. that just lame.

All we have to do is look at Dear Leader for guidance. The big "O" smokes 'em regularly so this a non-issue at best. Who is a better Peer Leader than the President?

Anytime I've ever been told that "smoking isn't allowed here, sir" while I was out freaking doors I simply reply "I am sure that you are correct."

There are a few things in this world I really detest.

Missionary born again christians, always trying to convert people around them.

Computer Zealots or who has to actively try to convert pagans to their hardware, OS and Software of choice.

Non-drinking people who believes that no other person in the world should be allowed to co-exist in a world where alcohol is used for anything but disinfection.

Non-smokers, or more specifically ex-smokers out on a crusade to have more people join their bleak existence of persistent biatching and whining to others.

Missionary vegetarians who want people to actively seek out protein deficiencies like they have, and start a life of smug sprout-eating in a holier than thou attitude only matched by Mac-users.

What these people have in common, is a desire to have others change their lifestyle to match their preferential choices through various forms of biatching, whining and false arguments about "health benefits/hazards" and "environment", when their agenda is simply a fascistoid control over what others should be allowed to do or not.

I don't smoke but there reaches a point where almost any movement has gone too far and this crosses that point IMO.

If they're going to ban smoking then they have to ban barbecuing too because I seriously doubt your lungs can tell the difference between second-hand tobacco smoke and second-hand fat dripped on hot charcoal smoke. Your nose yes, lungs no.
