Failure to report a death is a felony in North Carolina.

What a pointless law.

But, was she wearing clean underwear? Mom says that's important just in case something like this happens.

"He said police hadn't received any calls requesting welfare checks on Roth."

I'm sure the family was taking care of (collecting) the welfare checks for her.

The only question is who was cashing the checks?

Yeah, It sounds more like the housekeepers may have known that she was dead and continued to bill her credit card or something. It isn't like the dead woman is going to fark anything up. I would imagine the whole house was saturated with the smell of decomposition at that point.

A quick check on rotten.com will give you a wealth of reasons why "unconscious and not breathing" was not how one describes the aftereffects of months of decomposition in a North Carolina summer.

Understatement of the year.

A lot of old people smell pretty bad as it is. Maybe the maids didn't want to be rude.

FTFA: Smith said the residence was very well kept

Of course. How much work did the housekeepers really have to do? Dead people, generally speaking, don't make a big mess...outside of the whole decomposing thing, that is.

The Face Of Oblivion: Failure to report a death is a felony in North Carolina. What a pointless law.

Rotting bodies are major health hazards, not to mention less scrupulous types have been known to hide the bodies of their dead parents to keep collecting Social Security checks.

Not a pointless law at all.

Actually it's cats that do that. Dogs are actually quite loyal by nature, and rarely do this.

I would think the maids would notice that everything was exactly as they left it, save for a layer of dust. But about the dead lady, her name wasn't Gladys. It was Blanche. I wonder if Blanche died with a blanched face. I don't get to use that word that often as an adjective. Sorry people.

Yeah, these stories always make me sad, after the initial gross-out phase passes. I mean, at best, this 88-year-old woman had no family or friends check on her for 8 months. At worst, her family or friends were cashing her checks for 8 months while she rotted in her bed.

According to this article there was a family of four living with her, so that makes it extra creepy,

A friend of mine is a reserve cop in a little town in Iowa. He once got called to check on an old guy who hadn't been heard from for a month. Pretty much knew what he was going to find. Dead guy lying on his couch with little pyramids of dried bodily fluids that had formed on the couch cushion under his ears. He could smell the corpse from the front porch.

/cool story, bro

Ugh.

How could they not have not smelled the decomp? The report said that people were seen in and out of the house.

I've been to houses where people have been dead only a week and it smelled so bad you had to put vicks under your nose to breathe properly.

I imagine she would just be a bloated skin bag by the time this was reported.
