would like to have a word with you, mr. reed

2009-12-16 03:42:24 PM
lou reed needs to get out of ny, and the local press suck-ups. a guy like reed with a minimum of talent should give thanks daily that he has made something out of nothing, and gotten away with it.

Two words- over rated.

Lou Reed? Lou Farking Reed is still alive? And yet Ace Frehley is dead. Who do I see about this injustice?

Either The Raven was a complete fluke or Reed has far more than a minimum of talent.

I'm thinking Lou Reed has never listened to the Velvet Underground.

2009-12-16 06:03:38 PM
i think the Velvet Underground represent the best music can be without being in danger of being commercialized.

2009-12-16 06:08:16 PM
lol...Velvet Underground was garbage...Lou Reed is a 5-foot troll.

Get back to me when you can sing a note in tune, Lou. Or is that supposed to be some sort of hipster Sprechstimme?

Well, he's right.

hell, get back to me when you can remember your own goddamned lyrics when you perform live without having to rely on a teleprompter.

Obviously, Lou Reed has not seen what is going on in in the Betelgeuse-7a galaxy. The shiat that's going down with the quasars there will blow your frickin' mind, man.

Their music doesn't really take me anywhere other than looking for the remote before I pass out from boredom (except that Merzbow sounding album that he did).

People hate everything. Especially when the artist is arrogant about it.

IMO almost all good artists are arrogant, it's part of what allows them to do what they do.

Well at least we have them to thank for all of Nico's bizarre albums.

Whatever, Lou.

I liked the Velvet Underground back before they sold out when they were called the Burlap Basement and it was nothing but banging on cooking pans with spoons and a broken accordian and Lou putting wine bottles up his butt while yodelling.

As much as I would like to believe that to each their own, after listening approximately 2 minutes and 6 seconds into that video I had to place that song on pause.

Then when I glanced at the comments and saw "Yes!! Jesus , finally someone who gets what I mean." I proceeded to close that tab entirely.

When you're right, you're right. I concur entirely, Lou.

I don't know if Lou Reed needs a talent enhancement, but you need a shift key.

Never had weed, not a drinker, like caffeine on occasion. *LOVE* Velvet Underground. Also love various famed historical composers and other luminous dignitaries of the musical arts.

It really is personal preference and has little to do with drugs (except those used to make the music, of course).

Well, I listen to music that most people feel you have to be under the influence of a substance to enjoy (well, Henry Rollins does at least.)

You think "Venus in Furs" is drug music? Wow, you're doing it wrong. I'm too high to figure out what you're doing, but it is definitely wrong.

People trying to hate on Lou Reed and the VU's music are farking bonkers. That shiat is completely essential (well, maybe only 2 or 3 of Lou Reed's solo albums, but all the VU material is)

the VU would probably be too terrifying to listen to on heavy drugs.

That said, the VU have a much wider range of music than some peopel seem to think. It wasn't all craziness like Black Angel's Death Song or weird depressing stuff like what Nico sang.

Songs like White Light/White Heat or I'm Waiting For My Man are just farking great rock songs. And the s/t album is really interesting in a totally different way as well (more like lo-fi indierock)

TheOriginalEd: I dont get it.. People think this is music?

Your specious implication is that all of their music sounds like "Venus in Furs," which couldn't be further from the truth.

Part of the genius of VU was their range. Their songs vary from the gentle pop of "Sunday Morning" to the guitar noise/freak-out of "I Heard Her Call My Name" to folkish ballads like "Pale Blue Eyes," to the proto-Southern Rock of "Oh! Sweet Nuthin'"

They were great songwriters who constantly broke their own mold. And I love every extreme of the band. I love their noisy messes and I love their pop sensibilities. I cannot think of many bands that have that sort of range, and possess it with such full mastery.

This is the band who wrote "Sweet Jane," and you want to hold "Venus in Furs" as the ultimate example of their work? You're just being willfully ignorant. Try picking up Loaded, one of the best classic rock albums - and you'll be amazed that it's the same band.

(Meanwhile I'll be enjoying "Sister Ray" and laughing at your stubborn blindness)

I like VU - I have listened to them for decades. On vinyl no less. But I politely say that Mr Reed is mistaken - there's quite a bit that has gone on that's 'close' to what VU was doing - even today. He overestimates himself to a fair degree - he had his moments, but he ain;t no genius. Hell, he's been resting on his laurels for decades.

2009-12-16 08:58:18 PM
I'm not an audiophile by any stretch of the imagination. But I liked the work Lou Reed did on "Rock and Rule". So I looked him up. Before that I didn't know who he was. I had heard in MuchMusic interviews from various artists how VU inspired them. So I got so VU music and Lou Reed music from the library. Damn what a pile of crap. I hated almost every single song. a few I could tolerate. A great disappointment.

At first, I was getting myself all worked up to rant at you muthafarkers who are dissing VU. But then it occurred to me that I really hate a lot of bands that other people consider influential. I guess what I'm saying is... we're not so different, you and I.

Dylan is literally the only guy who can challange the velvets for importance and influence as far as 60s rock acts go. I hardly think its a diss to the Velvets to be behind him!

Gangway Fathead: Who else was doing what the VU was doing in the late 60's? Like 'em or not they were pretty influential.

Who was doing what VU, precisely, were doing? No one. But when you want to break it down:

The Doors, Love, and Pink Floyd (Syd Barret's days, and some of the stuff up until "Dark Side"). That, at least, in terms of the stranger moments. The rest of it was all wreckless, messy rock and roll that a lot of garage bands were doing. The Sonics, the 13th Floor Elevators, the Third Bardo, etc.

It's all a matter of what elements they want to focus on over others. And influence only lasts so long, because you can say VU were highly influential around then, but someone could say that the Stooges were even more influential, or that by today's standards, a lot of indie bands sound like Love.

Me? Oh, I like "Loaded" best. . .

/C'mon. "Rock and Roll" may be the only good song ABOUT rock and roll.
//The gorgeous "Oh Sweet Nothing?" better than anything on "Velvet Underground & Nico."
