since when does starbucks offer free wi-fi?

2009-12-16 12:39:01 AM
Starbucks used to offer free Wi-Fi. Not anymore, at least as a general rule. You have to have a pre-paid card, or purchase something and ask for an access code.

2009-12-16 12:48:30 AM
They've had free wifi at the McDonalds around here for at least a coupla years now, I thought it was nationwide.
Starbucks offers free wifi on certain plans, like for example, it's always free on an iPhone. If you register a Starbucks card online, you get 2 hours of free wifi a day.

Will the unemployed hipsters start hanging out at McDonalds now?

Well, I wish McDonalds luck, not that they need it.

I just note I can sit at a coffeeshop/coffeehouse most've the day and have a relatively pleasant experience, with mostly a good smell wafting around, and not have 2" of salty grease condense on my laptop or in my lungs.

Really wish that Babes and the Candy Store and Bliss and Amazons would let me work on a computer -- I promise to buy drinks all day.

Starbucks wifi isn't free, either pay for it as you go or get a Starbucks card, register it and then use it at least once every 30 days. For me that works out to about $10 a month that I put on the card. A bit over 30 cents a day for good wifi is pretty darn cheap.

McDonald's has gourmet coffee? That shiat is farking nasty. I may not be a big Starbucks fan, but at least their overpriced mess is drinkable.

The McDonald's in Kirksville, MO has had wifi for a while. Not sure if it was free before or not.

Are you guys actually saying Kirksville has something cutting edge here?

It was only very technically $2.99.

I've done wireless at McDonald's at least a dozen times in the last three years. (I'm not a proud man). I have DSL at home, so I had free access. I'd buy a cup of coffee, and without fail, the manager would see the laptop tucked under my arm at the counter and offer me a free WiFi code-card.

I know there are a million open APs out there, and almost as many independent coffee shop with WiFi. So noted. But, when I find myself in Brookings, SD or Salem, MO at 7 AM and need a WiFi hit, finding McDonald's is nice and easy.

The McDonald's in the tiny hamlet of Philipsburg, PA has had wifi for a couple of years. Free, though? Eh. If they wanted to call it free, they'd open it up.

Best free Wi-Fi spot I had used to be a bar and grill place called Old Chicago in OKC. They had a great selection of beers and an excellent staff, so you could hang out, watch sports on their large screen TV's, eat pretty decent food, and surf the web on your laptop or palm, all while drinking a great beer.

Hell, why do I need to go home when I have all of that at my bar!

2009-12-16 08:44:38 AM
Cool. This means I won't have to sit next to the window at McDonald's in order to use the Friendly's wifi that is actually free.

/do people actually use the wifi at Friendly's?

Coffee? WiFi? What will McDonald's do next? Start serving food?

2009-12-16 09:18:55 AM
my local mcdonalds has had free wifi for many years already.

Slowpoke is Sloooooooow

2009-12-16 09:26:07 AM
All three McD's in this area have had free wi-fi for.......a loooooong time already....and we're in about the third or fourth level of hell here.....

2009-12-16 10:26:39 AM
If you have certain Verizon DSL/FIOS plans you can get free wi-fi at Starbucks and other locations providing you are running Windows.

2009-12-16 10:30:03 AM
This surprises me because everything about a McDs is subtly or not-so-subtly designed to get you in, fed and the hell out in 20 minutes or less, from the menu choices to the chairs that are uncomfortable to sit in for any length of time to the tables that can't be moved together to accommodate a large group that might want to sit and chat. That's the reason North American McDonalds don't serve beer unlike the ones in Europe where you can buy an overpriced Heineken to go along with your crapburger - they're not anti-alcohol, they just don't want to give you any reason to linger after your meal, so I'm not seeing why they'd offer WiFi.

bales: since when does starbucks offer free wi-fi?

THIS. I hope this will make Starbucks offer free wifi instead of their lame @ss tactic of making you buy a gift card and then registering yourself on their website.

Does anybody have more information about this new burger they're introducing? I think it's called the Arch Deluxe.

AT&T WiFI
which is in Starbucks and McDonalds has been free for the iPhone since the launch and for AT&T DSL subscribers. AT&T bought Wayport which was in McD's and Starbucks switched from T-Mobile to AT&T wireless.

That explains the above posts imagining that the WiFi was free.

Unemployed hipsters are an upgrade? Maybe from the bums in the library who shiat themselves, but not from any sort of paying customer.

Actually their mochas are really good...except yesterday when I went to get one, they gave me hot chocolate instead and I didn't realize until I had already driven away. Jerks.

/hot chocolate was actually good too
//never go to McD's for any other reason

For years I've thought exactly the opposite. McD's regular coffee is bland but OK. Starbucks tastes like an old, rusty BBQ grill was scraped into the cup and stirred. You need lots of sugar and cream just to cover the horror and get it down.

2009-12-16 02:33:12 PM
I always got the feeling that McDonald's wanted to you get your food as fast as possible, gobble it down quickly and GTFO.

Free Wifi would suggest otherwise... At least looking at the way people tie-up tables at Starbucks for hours on their laptops.

Why would I want to bust out my laptop at a place well-known for selling greasy food? That's just asking for trouble.

We've had free wifi in our restaurant since 2006. Its not new.

/Canadian
//So maybe its new to americans.
///Smug cuz thats apparently how we roll
////I have wifi in my igloo, and a big screen.

Once again, an American company does something in Europe long before they offer it in America. McDonald's in the UK have been offering free WiFi for years. No purchase necessary, no WiFi access card, just connect and browse.
