(Some Guy)   Farker releases 2009 version of the controllable Christmas lights. Sadly, the web design is still stuck in 1991   (komar.org) divider line 132

ltdaywalker: I have plain old Comcastic to the house ... but re-broadcasting via three dedicated 100 Mbps servers at an ISP - some info in the FAQ - they are getting quite the workout tonight via Fark!

p4ul13: Small world Paul ... for those that want to see a Farker do a Polar Plunge in Antarctica, he is the person on the far left below - more Antarctica pictures here.

Congrats on being the most annoying thing on Fark all week.

swingerofbirches: I have to say, just my opinion, I have celiac disease, and I am not interested in a cure. I like eating gluten-free (which is a cure, unless you consider the cure being able to eat anything you want). Eating gluten-free forces me to eat more healthfully.

If money should be spent on anything it's in better diagnosis and just letting doctors know the simple fact that celiac disease exists, cos I pretty much had to diagnose myself and beg to get tested for it. My doctor had never heard of it, even though it's a common disease.

If by visiting your web-site for a few seconds I contributed, I'm glad to have helped!

Serious? That's what celiac disease is? I can't have and wheat or dairy and you know what? No biggie. I also fail to see what reason there is to raise money for it. Sounds like attention-whoring.

Wow.

I must admit one thing though: I spent more time on that site than any other site where so many laws of web design are blatantly violated. A full 5 minutes. Actually I still have the lovely lounged-out Xmas music playing as I type this. At least the music and Santa-Homer cursor are controllable - gotta give them that much.

Whatever happened to the notion that stupid people shouldn't breed? Did that get voted down?

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate that this is all for a good cause and all that, but don't you think having Celiac is enough of a burden for your kids to have in life? Do you really want them to grow up with the whole "Oh, that is your dad? Well, I would go with you to the prom, but I just remembered that I have an infected hangnail scheduled for that daykthxbye."

The Angry Hand of God: HERE IS YOUR EYEBLEACH !!!!

Thats the opposite of eye bleach for that site. Eye bleach in this case would be google.com

Yay! I remember your site from last year. Good way to pass the time, but I don´t know if I could live next door to it...too much like that Seinfeld episode.

If you use IE it leaves you complimentless.

This website would have been pretty advanced in 1991, considering the first Web browser wasn't released until 1993...

Dinner: This website would have been pretty advanced in 1991, considering the first Web browser wasn't released until 1993...

Mosaic was launched in 1993 but Tim Berners-Lee finished WorldWideWeb on Christmas Day 1990.

Glad you enjoyed 'em ... and yes, there are controls at the top of the page to turn off the MIDI music and Santa-Homer cursor.

Dinner/genner: The Christmas Webcam actually W3C validates for Transitional HTML4.0 ... which was approved in the late 1990's ... ;-)

Firefox gets "Most Excellent Browser Choice Dude." I totally read that in stereo from Bill & Ted.

I know Alek and he's a really cool guy!

He does this (and other fun yet geeky stuff) to raise money for research into a disease that affects both of his kids.

Feel free to criticize his page as long as you spread the link around and/or make a contribution.

neuroflare: There's a sign in the pagethat keeps being updated with hilarious things.

If you look more closely at the page itself, there's a light-green TEXT BOX below the control buttons. Type in it, then hit your Enter/Return key. Watch what happens. Magic!

hulkster: As the Farker with the Christmas Lights and the web design, I'm getting a big chuckle out of these responses! ;-)

I just tossed a Corona Beer out there for the Fark Crowd - any more requests?!?

P.S. The concept of allowing people on the Internet to control your house is a bit over-the-top ... so the web site design is too.

Hey Alek. And yes, I *did* see you check before answering "boxers vs briefs" on the screen. LOL

Wasn't there a website a while back that allowed users to control various appliances in a guy's home? I think it was called drive me nuts or something. I'd post the link, but my google-fu is weak at the moment.

Donated - well done sir. That was an amusing evening of IMing to your HQ.

little big man: Donated - well done sir. That was an amusing evening of IMing to your HQ.

Glad you had fun little big man and while the website is totally free (and totally fun), any optional donations to the University of Maryland Center for Celiac Research is appreciated. I can forward Paypal donations (they aren't setup for that) or I much prefer people just donate direct online via credit card (link at that link).

P.S. LOL jesusrock7 - it was a crazy night with over 5,000 IM's ... but I remember that one being kinda funny/classic, so I chimed in.

And HEY, we'll do it again tonight ... and every night until January 1st - HO-HO-HO! ;-)

Nice try. Your profile says you live in California and it's no secret this guy actually lives in Lafayette, Colorado.

Uh, no. This is miles beyond 1991.

Thank you Nakito. You beat me to it.

There appears to be a discrete, finite number of possible configurations for the Christmas display. For all we know, we're looking at static images, taken at a prior date, one or more for each of the possible combinations (just add "time of day", "man in frame", etc. to the attribute lists). I don't believe I'm controlling his Christmas display, I don't think is neighbors are annoyed, because it's not real.

2009-12-16 01:09:44 PM
Ashiea: Nice "bust" - amazing how many people that "are my neighbors" say it's annoying. In actual fact, they think it is a hoot and their kids love it. Plus webcam1 is actually across the street at the neighbor's house (uses 802.11g wireless), so can't be all that bad.

xkillyourfacex: You might enjoy reading about the Great Christmas Lights Hoax of 2004 where exactly that was done. Only three zones, so eight possible combinations, plus that was only "active" at night - darkness is your friend for a simulation.

Would be a wheeee bit harder to "fake it" after outing myself ... plus now with eight zones there are 256 combinations ... and then add inflatables going up and down, plus daytime shots. So while you are welcome to be skeptical, it's a 100% real since 2005 ... ditto the over $40,000 raised for Celiac Disease.

For those Fark'ers who are curious what the Christmas Display looked like as the X10 Controls got pounded, here's some time-lapse videos - see the ones from December 15th, 2009.
