If that number includes everything down to the local level govt, its probably a bit low.

I've been the lone lao wai at a table of 12 a number of times. The only ways to survive are as follows-

1. Choose your grail. The options will normally be; an undersized shotglass, a glass about the size of a Polaner jelly jar, or a wine glass. If baijiu is present, ask one of the eight waitresses over your shoulder for the shotglasses. Keep liquids of any sort, urine included, in the other glasses. The first chance someone has to pour that sorghum shiatfark in any other container and shout "gan bei" they'll take it, and you'll end up like this poor bastard in the article.

2. Don't let them divide and conquer. They will toast you numerous times throughout the dinner. Make sure that each time they do, everyone at the table drinks. They will try to come at you in groups of three or four, so that each of them only does one shot for every three or four you do. Make it clear that you won't drink unless they all do. Try to do so without mumbling "..cowardly coonts."

3. Adapt or die. As well as being sneaky about attacking you from all angles, they also only drink about half a shot for every one you do. Half the liquid is spilled through multiple cheers motions, as well as a final tap on the table in front of them. Your first instinct might be to call them out for spilling all over the nice table cloth. That strategy is a lose-lose. It will make them lose face, and the cloth will see much worse as crab shells and duck dick are dribbled about.

4. Don't be afraid to pull the trigger. It's pretty common to leave a luncheon/dinner to boot and rally.

5. If you are a smoker, smoke. If not, light one and keep it burning in your hand at all times.

oi_piss_me_off: funny story: my family and i were in a small village/town in China for an annual scholarship award ceremony my grandfather had set up, which means lots and lots of government officials. During dinner the night before there were several toasts before every course for the entire 10 course meal. Towards the end one governor asks my younger brother "do you know why we drink so much?" And my brother being a wise ass, says "Because you are all alcoholics?". My uncle translates, there's a brief pause, and everyone starts laughing, then silence, "what's your name? What's your English name? hahahaha..."

My uncle told us that the following year that a law had passed that no government officials are allowed to drink to excess during business dinner.

I've been a part of several of these dinners (business, not government). It's nasty. nasty nasty nasty. Collage did not prepare me for this kind of drinking. Generally the next guy to arrive has to drink a full cup of booze to acknowledge each guest already at the table. if you get there late you're done before you start. If you're seen as having a large tolerance you're fired on by most of the other guests.

I only had to attend these every month or so for one year, and each time I left with a three day hangover. nasty nasty. An experience, but not enjoyable.

And it's not just the Chinese, a lot of Asian countries have drinking cultures where it's often encouraged to get shiat faced, despite the stereotype that they don't drink or can't hold their liquor. In my experience Chinese, Koreans, Japanese and Thais all drink a hell of a lot. Not everyone drinks, but the ones that do drink, drink a LOT. And especially in business or official situations like this, you will often be encouraged to drink to excess.

I think it's awesome, at least compared to the podunk teetotaler town I come from.

Dunno exactly how it is in China but in Japan, don't ever finish your drink, unless you WANT it refilled.

Regarding the whole 80-90 billion on Official State Dinners, consider that the figure is for multiple state dinners throughout the year for a million different bureaucrats and their private-industry counterparts. The Chinese have 4 to 7 times as many people as we have, and that figure is not entirely outlandish given the elaborate nature of the DPRC dinner party. I just wanna know how much booze is consumed in those state dinners.

I agree, had some Er Guo Tou when over there. OMG was it potent. I should have picked some up in Beijing, tried to find some at the airport (yeah they are going to carry cheap liquor) but couldn't find any.
