I really really want to see both of them though.

Also, subby, the people who do the nominating get advance copies/screenings of the movies that are eligible (as in released before the end of the year).

2009-12-15 01:03:35 PM
It's recursive logic that the movies that get the awards recognition are the ones that come out closer to awards season, so the studios delay the release of their "good" movies to closer to awards season, so all the "good" movies seem to come out at the end of the year.

How did Sandra Bullock get nominated for The Proposal?

2009-12-15 01:06:17 PM
Inglorious Bastards for best drama? Really? Shiat, I'd put District 9 over Inglorious Bastards any day of the week as a better drama, and that's not counting other movies that aren't as scorned as scifi/action flicks in awards nominations.

And I wonder what the line is on Matt Damon winning best actor and best supporting actor?

2009-12-15 01:06:37 PM
Subby is movie-ignorant and silly. Also, Up in the Air has been released.

eddiesocket: Subby is movie-ignorant and silly. Also, Up in the Air has been released.

Up in the Air is on limited release until Christmas, when it goes wide. So, yes, it's out, but it's not fullscale. Same bs they pull every year for award farming movies

2009-12-15 01:10:59 PM
Really? Sandra Bullock in the Proposal got a best actress nomination? Because that movie was farking awful. So was Duplicity, absolute garbage. I guess they didn't have much to work with this year in terms of female actresses in comedies this year..
I mean, I love Sandra Bullock and all (wooh, Demolition Man), but that particular film... the proposal... ughhhhhh

On the other hand, I'm glad to see The Informant got a few nominations!

Also, where the Hell is..

This years nominations are weak without it.

We all know Up is going to win best animated feature, but Coraline and Fantastic Mr. Fox both really should be competitive with it; all three are GREAT films.

I hadn't heard of Nine; thought they were talking about 9 for a second, and was like "...it really deserves all those nods? And since when was it was a comedy/musical?"

Last question: where is Watchmen? I guess it will probably show up at the Academy Awards as a nomination for best special effects so it can lose to Avatar, but I just thought it would get a few nominations in all the award shows (which it would fail to win.)

And also, no love for Funny People?

2009-12-15 01:13:36 PM
Drama - I don't know what its odds are, but The Hurt Locker deserves this award

Musical or Comedy - I plan to see Nine, but I have trouble believing it will be better than The Hangover

Actor Musical or Comedy - Matt Damon was great in The Informant, not once did I think "Hey, Jason Bourne got fat."

Actor in a Supporting Role - Christoph Waltz ought to walk away with this one

A. Wasn't Funny. And to fend of some impending comments, I actually like the cast and Apatow.
B. Way too long. Did that really need to be 2.5 hours?

Is it really that big of a surprise? I stopped watching any award shows years ago because it's obvious that they're pretty much all just part of the marketing machine, and merit and artistry isn't really a factor.

Oh that movie was so good...

I've always had a problem with movies that go in to limited release the last couple of weeks before any of the award nominations in order to make a nomination, but don't get general release for several weeks later in some cases. It is a hack ploy by the distributor that should be banned. Full public release or GTFO and wait for next year. Go Hangover! I'm picking up my copy after work.

2009-12-15 01:28:05 PM
Up In The Air is a pretty great little movie. It's going to divide people the way Juno and Little Miss Sunshine did, once all the praise and awards roll in, though.

Well, I agree that it felt long, and the whole trying to get the girl part could've been cut down. However, I don't think it was meant to be a straight up comedy. It had a lot of funny lines, but I think it was more drama than anything. On that level, I think it worked pretty well.

mak3_7up_y0urs: And also, no love for Funny People?

Least funny and most depressing movie I have ever seen billed as a comedy. the only likable character at the ends is the unfaithful husband.

/If you wanna see all the jokes, watch the trailer.

2009-12-15 01:42:18 PM
It's not a secret that the entertainment industry is based out of LA and New York. So if you want to see movies first, you'll have to move there, much like if you want good seats at a hog-judging competition, it helps to live in the middle of the country.

2009-12-15 01:43:18 PM
we all know the directors are in charge of marketing and trailer assembly. it's always their fault when a movie is marketed improperly.

Also,

Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture
Matt Damon, Invictus
Stanley Tucci, The Lovely Bones
Christopher Plummer, The Last Station
Christoph Waltz, Inglorious Basterds
Woody Harrelson, The Messenger

If that man doesn't win both the Golden Globes and Oscars, I will forever doubt the way these things are judged.

An honestly brilliant performance, in 3 languages.

Subby clearly knows nothing about the movie industry.

"Up in the Air" has been out for two weeks in limited release, and goes wide on Christmas Day.

These awards are given by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which is a bunch of quote-whoring junketeers who get to see all the movies -- with the exception of "Avatar," which no one saw until last week -- months and months ahead of release.

The only people who should care about the winners of the Golden Globes are agents and studio executives.

2009-12-15 02:09:14 PM
Uh, I saw "Up In The Air" in Cleveland last Thursday. I live in Ohio and I've seen almost every nominee, it's not that difficult.

2009-12-15 02:15:27 PM
Wait, wait, waaaaaait a good god-damn minute here.....some of you actually liked The Informant? Really? You complain that "Hollywood is out of ideas", but then perpetuate it by praising complete and utter shiat like that movie?

2009-12-15 02:17:08 PM
WTF? I saw 'up in the air' a month or two ago at the film fest.

2009-12-15 02:32:23 PM
I think I might be one of the only people to think "The Hangover" is severely overrated.

I liked it. Thought it was pretty funny in parts. But it's no better than any of the other formulaic comedies released over the past decade or so.

Though I do think seeing the theatrical trailer also ruined it for me. It pretty much showed every funny part of the movie, so there weren't many surprises seeing the full film.

2009-12-15 02:33:06 PM
district 9 was robbed. best original screenplay? sure. but how about picture, director and actor for sharlto copley?

2009-12-15 02:36:27 PM
They're both playing in San Francisco

2009-12-15 02:46:40 PM
I remember a few years back the Golden Globes came under fire when it was found out that the studios were buying votes. But it was quickly hushed up. I figure that nothing has changed.

2009-12-15 03:01:57 PM
This list is complete crap. Distric 9 should have been nominated for best picture.

Here's to also hoping Dexter wins some awards for best TV show and actor. Love that show!

ps. there is an article on Yahoo about things that were snubbed. Author lists one snub as Star Trek for Best Picture....seriously? I just wathced it and thought it was horrible. The plot was so weak I don't think I ever really figured out why the bad guy was trying to kill everyone. Sucked.

And the actors themselves. Nominations by the Hollywood Foreign Press are kind of a big deal and some noms lead up to the Oscars.

Yeah. I would have to also go with THIS, minus the insults. lolz

Do we need to go over this again? Sci-fi is not one of the "approved" genres. Same with fantasy, animation and comedies.

Hahahaha after that retarded Mech Warrior scene where he blows away everyone with relative ease but falls weak and helpless whenever he sees the main bad guy? Yea, that dropped the movie from about an A- to a B-. Cool movie up until then, but that sequence was full retard. Peter Jackson probably thought it up since he ectoplasms like he saw a spooky ghost and those kinds of scenes.

Oh, and in case you missed the first part of my post, hahahaha.

Sure, but compared to Inglorious Bastards who actually got a nom? Sorry, D9 was a far better movie.

Sadly, making $50.73 at the box office means Patton Oswalt's relevatory performance merits no discussion.

Depends on how you rate a good movie. I rate on characters, story, acting, cinematography, ingenuity, (action if there is any), suspense, script, fun to watch, and whether it is a complete, beginning to end, film.

Characters: Inglorious Basterds
Story: Tied
Acting: Inglorious Basterds
Cinematography: Tied
Ingenuity: District 9
Suspense: Inglorious Basterds
Script: Inglorious Basterds
Fun to Watch: Inglorious Basterds
Complete Film: Inglorious Basterds

So besides the cool concept behind D9 (I am giving it inginuity despite the blatantly obvious apartheid theme)Basterds bests it on just about every level. Unless I am missing something? Besides that slight lull when the cinema owner and the war hero establish a relationship, the film is above beyond.

+1 To IB for no stupid Mech Warrior scene.

I'm torn between creepy creepy John Lithgow in Dexter and NPH for being NPH.

But otherwise -- am I the only person who keeps thinking of 9 as that weird CG thing that looked like they ripped off Brom?

If John Lithgow doesn't win both the Golden Globe and an Emmy for Dexter, then it's obvious that the whole awards thing is rigged.

I'm sad that Fantastic Mr. Fox didn't get on the best director list. That film was pretty much perfectly assembled.

Here's a little education for those claiming conspiracy: industry people who vote on these awards get access to these films before the rest of you do. As a member of the Producers Guild, I have DVD screeners of Invictus and Brothers sitting at my house right now, so that I can vote on them for the Producers Guild Awards. I have also been receiving invitations from the studios for special screenings taking place in LA, NYC, etc.

So relax.

As a non member of the producers guild, I do as well. In fact, I think it has your name scrolling across the screen. Interesting.
