Uh.... about time? Time was probably like 16 years ago. The "girl" is 17.

How about a day (ok decade) late, and a hundred million dollars short. Way to go judicial system. Way to go.

NO FREAKING KIDDING.

I wouldn't leave the lady alone to take care of SPERM let alone an actual child. Jeez.

I thought she lost custody for a while a few years ago too.

I still don't know how the heck she wasn't taken away at birth, because you know it's highly unlikely that Courtney Love was telling the truth when she said she didn't use heroin while she was pregnant.

Assorted defenses, for the heck of it:

They test babies whose mothers are suspected users for drugs in the system. If they didn't find it, she didn't use it.

Our moral judgment of fitness to be a parent is not the same as whether specific laws were broken with the knowledge of authorities. When state workers come to investigate fitness of a parent, they check for food in the fridge, a bed for the child, and investigate whether she is being abused. If these things check out and there is no evidence that the child was partied in the presence of, then there are techically not legal grounds for removal.

Courtney undeniably parties a lot and seems to split time between falling off and back on the wagon; I never see photos of her child next to her while strung out or in trouble. Maybe when she parties, she has the child stay with the nanny?

NOT defending it (my own spouse is imagining a delusional custody attempt to get our son to go live with a heroin addict who tried to kill her own child), not by a longshot, but I've noticed that the legal system strictly operates based on what is illegal vs. legal, leaving the larger mental health and morality issues alone.
/plus, i really love Hole

PLUS, she's wealthy enough to always have had nannies, etc., so how do we know

Frances should sue for emancipation. She is 17, and due to come into her trust fund at what, 18? 21? I am sure her grandparents have her best interests at heart, but I suspect the money helps. And for God's sake keep Courtney's paws off of it. She already squandered her own $$$.

Frances seems like a bright kid. She is cute and has good connections. She could do okay for herself.

Hole was a good band, really. And she was great in The People vs Larry Flynt.

/agree with you about the selling out of Nirvana, but she couldn't have done that without David Grohl's sign off so.......

Hopefully smart enough to wisely invest her inheritance, and to keep spending down unless she's racking in the big $$$...

She lost custody in 2003 and only got it back in 2005. I am on my phone so it's inconvenient to Google it, but I seem to recall she herself recounted a story of how she OD'd while her child was with her.

I think David just wanted to be done with everything even remotely associated with those years. You can tell even in interviews today he still has pain in his heart when talking about Kurt.

That had to be hard. I mean, it's got to be tough to finish grieving and put the dead behind you when everybody thinks of you as "the dead rock-god's drummer". Foo Fighters got out of Nirvana's shadow a long time ago, but I'm sure he still has to deal with a lot of people who think of him that way.

More or less... I think it was just his way of moving on and settling with his grief. I hold no grudge towards the guy for selling out his share of the IP.

Cool Story Bro moment.

I saw Tenacious D at a bar in Chicago some time ago and Dave was in attendance. He got on the stage and the three rocked out a few Foo songs and a couple of rock classics. Jack knows how to do a mean Bon Scott impression.

SundaesChild: /agree with you about the selling out of Nirvana, but she couldn't have done that without David Grohl's sign off so.......

Yes, she could have, and yes she did.

Universal owns Nirvana's DGC masters, and Kurt's estate specifically controls the publishing to the songs where he has sole songswriting credit. So long as Universal approved of the usage, Grohl and Novoselic had no recourse to stop it.

Nevermind's songs were originally credited "Lyrics by Cobain, Music by Nirvana", but Cobain forced Grohl and Novoselic to revert all of the songs to him - save for "Smells Like Teen Spirit" - in a 1992 contract renegotiation.

That's why the video game ads used "Breed" and not "Teen Spirit". Grohl and Novoselic share songwriting rights for "Teen Spirit", so the estate would have to get their permission to use it. (That's why it took so long for "Teen Spirit" to show up in Rock Band / Guitar Hero - the full band had to be on board.)

Huh, the more you learn.

I thought Grohl and Novoselic still retained profit earning from it as well though, so don't they at least get compensated for Love whoring our her dead husbands band?

Yep, they still get performance royalties for whatever she does with the music. I think that's got to be weird for them, though. (After losing a lawsuit, the Verve had something similar happen when "Bittersweet Symphony" was used in a Nike commercial. They were against it, but couldn't stop it. I think they ended up donating their performance royalties from the commercial to charity.)

Not that it matters, but that 1992 renegotiation is, in my mind, one of the biggest dick moves in the history of music. Not only did they have to give up the songwriting, Cobain forced them to make it retroactive to the release of Nevermind - Grohl and Novoselic had to return money that they'd already been paid.

Kurt certainly had a point about the songwriting - he did, after all, write most of the songs by himself. But he didn't need to take money out of their pockets. I'd like to think I would have quit before signing the contract, but I can understand why they didn't.

It's partly why Courtney's drunken decision to share Nirvana, LLC, evenly with Grohl and Novoselic was so baffling (and why she so strongly lamented it later). Cobain had a MUCH larger control of Nirvana than Grohl or Novoselic. I think that might have been the one time that Courtney's insane behavior might have benefited Nirvana fans.

Probably latent guilt for knowing she was the one that helped him fall off the wagon after his last intervention. I mean heroin is a biatch of a drug, but it doesn't help with your GF dealer lives right down the street from you.

The only people who think of him that way are Nirvana fans who can't let go. I hated Nirvana and kinda like the Foo Fighters so I don't associate Grohl with anything other than FF.

I'm surprised Dave Grohl didn't try to take Frances Bean and claim he was more integral to her creation than Courtney was.
