"Meredith Fuchs, general counsel to the National Security Archive, said "many poor choices were made during the Bush administration and there was little concern about the availability of e-mail records despite the fact that they were contending with regular subpoenas for records and had a legal obligation to preserve their records."

Oh no, for the Bush admin, those weren't poor choices. They knew what they were doing and why they were doing it.

It's small consolation, but at some point the public will learn what crooks they were.

i'll bet right now some former Bush officials are wishing they hadn't cut the computer security budget for the national archives. I mean, can you imagine what might happen if a hacker busted into that out of data security set up and dumped the entire archive into a bittorrent stream?

So basically what you're saying is..

Wait, Let me rephrase that - where's the torrent? :)

Somaticasual: Wait, Let me rephrase that - where's the torrent? :)

I really hope it ends up on wikileaks or something. It won't take people long at all to cross-reference it the way that they did with that AOL data dump from a few years ago.

Weaver95: But the public might not see any of the e-mails for quite some time because they will now go through the National Archives normal process for releasing presidential and agency records.

I'm glad the first two thoughts that pop in to your head are that the executive branch should probably have the power to keep this a secret and that it is amusing and you can't wait for the Obama emails.

I mean, I'm not surprised or nothing.

The world you have created in your own mind must be awesome.

just keep refreshing wikileaks. the hacker community seems to be the only group actually interested in oversight these days.

And cue Mr. Hopey McChange to swoop down and classify these emails as National Security Secrets and keep Congress from getting a single one of them in 3... 2...

If I've learned anything this past month, it's that messages from e-mails taken out of context prove, without a doubt, someone's guilt.

I wonder what will be found in these 22 million e-mails.

2009-12-14 08:05:03 PM
But former Bush spokesman Scott Stanzel downplayed the announcements.
"The liberal group CREW litigates for sport, distorts the facts and has consistently tried to create a spooky conspiracy out of standard IT issues. Their misleading statements about our work demonstrates their continued anti-Bush agenda, nearly a year after a new president was sworn in," he said.
"

This guy sounds like every Bush apologist on Fark!

I was really hoping the first talking point against this was that the Administration is over. Obama is in charge now. Who cares about the past 8 years?

It would've been nice to see a bunch of people, that argued about how emails from 5-20 years ago disprove global warming, argue that emails from 1-8 years ago don't matter anymore and Obama should worry about his own problems.

It is a shame that "Hah, Obama is going to be screwed in 3/7 years" is the first one if only because I think everybody missed out on an awesomely stupid talking point.

bulldg4life: Who cares about the past 8 years?

Those who ignore the past are doomed to repeat it. Also, these emails are important since they were subpoenaed by Congress as part of an investigation into the Bush administration, and were "misplaced". Now that they are found, it's obvious Congress may move forward with it's investigation, assuming of course that Obama doesn't pull a W, like he's done with practically every other policy decision since he's been in office.

Not on my account, chuckles.

As far as I'm concerned all White House communications that aren't classified (and no classifying them solely to prevent awkward revelations) should be available to the public within six months of the end of an administration at the latest. I'm a big fan of sol-fueled disinfectant, especially in politics.

You, on the other hand, are a wannabe cold warrior and partisan twit.

Government of the people, for the people and by the people.

We always seem to forget that shiat and let these motherfarkers, Republican and Democrat alike get away with whatever they want.

All emails that are not directly related to national security should be released to the public. All emails that are related to national security should still be given to oversight committees and cleared members of Congress (and then released after that administration is over, unless pertinent activities are still ongoing.)

Eventually, it should ALL be released.

They work for us.

I am shocked at how party loyalty has made so many God Damned people forget that.

I expressed a similar comment in many of those climate-gate email discussion threads.

I look forward to comparing a few names from those discussions with comments made about the Bush administration emails....
