FTFA: People can become infected by breathing in mist or vapor contaminated with the bacteria.

Which pretty much means anyone who showered at the hotel has probably been exposed. Fortunately legionella doesn't remain dormant for long, so most of the victims will realize their fate soon enough.

You gotta have some really uncommonly bad luck to be the ONE person that contracted the disease and died. Sort of reminds me of a quote from the Hitchhiker's Guide - updated here for relevance:

"What do do if you contract Legionnaire's Disease while in a resort in Flordia, with no hope of a cure. Consider how lucky you are that life has been good to you so far. Alternatively, if life hasn't been good to you so far, which given your current circumstances seems more likely, consider how lucky you are that it won't be troubling you much longer."

2009-12-14 04:40:14 PM
FTFA: Last week a man in Gainesville died after contracting the disease from the water supply at Shands Cancer Hospital.

At least the hospital kept him from dying of cancer.

From TFA: "An investigation revealed that the hotel had installed a water filter powerful enough to remove chlorine from its city-supplied water, which encouraged bacterial growth, The Herald reported."

This is why I just laugh whenever I hear someone biatching about adding chlorine to drinking water. "Bla bla, chlorine is a poison, wharrgarble!" Yeah, and legionella is bad for you, too. The difference is it takes way less chlorine to kill legionella than it takes to kill a human, so chlorinated water has essentially a 0% chance of killing you, while water contaminated with legionella has a much higher chance.

2009-12-14 04:55:09 PM
To be honest legionella is one of my biggest fears. That shiat loves to grow in water fountains and a/c water coolers and when you actually get it, good bye.

Suede head: The Foreign Legion is the best unit in the French army. Coincidentally, it contains few Frenchmen.

From what I've read, about half of them are French. However, Frenchmen are not allowed to join, so they are signed on as coming from other French speaking countries.

I believe he was making a joke about the use of the apostrophe in the headline. Yes, the headline was apparently supposed to be a joke, and yes the article says "legionnaires' disease", but I don't think it was a case of ebenbrooks not reading the article, rather just a joke. (I assume it was a joke, based on the submitter's mistake of placing the apostrophe before the S, and the fact that ebenbrooks used italics to emphasize "what".. but I could be wrong. IOW, "Legionnaire's invade hotel..." implies something owned by the legionnaire invaded the hotel. Or something)

Kinda sucks to have your association's name on one of the more feared mass public health threats around. And it's not like they're responsible for creating, falling victim at a high rate, or spreading it- their convention fell victim in the incident where it was first identified.

I mean, what if it was a Republican convention where it was first identified- it would then be forever known as "Republican's Disease", aka republicanosis, caused by the microorganism known as Republicanella.

That would suck. Wait, that would be kinda awesomely funny. The headline "Health Inspector raises serious concerns over discovery of Republican's found in hotel hot tub". "Stricter disinfection practices urged to prevent breeding of Republican's". Awesome.

I actually died of Legionnaire's disease, so I'm getting a kick out of these replies.

No, really. When I was a kid, I died- temporarily- from misdiagnosed Legionnaire's disease. They thought it was just double-pneumonia, but it wasn't. It's just that Legionnella wasn't widely recognized at the time. Modern doctors recognized it in my medical history and told me what it *really*, most likely, was.

It killed me stone dead. I suffered enough damage to my brain from being dead that much of my memory prior to the day I woke from being dead was wiped out. I remembered basics (tying shoes, shapes, colors, names of things, and everything mundane) but didn't remember who I was, who my family was, or any of the details of my childhood up until that point.

I don't remember how it felt on the dying side of the sickness, but I remember waking up and feeling the recovery end of it. It was painful. My chest was on fire. My lungs felt useless. I couldn't breathe, I felt so weak I could barely move, and I slipped in and out of consciousness a lot. My throat was raw, though that may have been from the endoscopy.

I'm told the incident that led to my being rushed to the hospital was me having a seizure and collapsing on the floor of my cousin's house during the Christmas gathering. I was a child at the time.

I awoke not long after (minutes?), a new person who never got back the memory of being that other person. As far as I'm concerned, the boy my parents raised to that point is dead. I'm someone else who just happens to have the same body, but a different mind. My body was born in May, but the mind I have now was born in December, many years later.

So yes-- Legionnaire's is a biatch. It's no fun. It can and will kill you if it's not diagnosed properly. I was lucky that my heart kicked in and started beating again.
