I wouldn't call these northern drivers, they're New England drivers. Altogether different. NE drivers think Boston traffic rules are normal.

This is the first time in history someone's ever referred to Rhode Island as surrounding something.

Not surprised. I used to live in Shelton.

I expected to see I95 and and at least a dozen dead though.

this was happening all over the northeast yesterday...
it was a basic situation of roads icing up very quickly.

I'm happy that nobody was seriously hurt, but I'm even happier that this happened on a Sunday, otherwise the accident would have really messed up my commute.

1) Lived in CT for many many years, and it's been my experience that the Merritt Parkway is 50/50 new yorkers + nutmeggers
2) I live in Gaithersburg, MD and of this tri-state area, Virginia is the worst and has CT beat hands down. Not only do VA'ers not use a turn signal ever or drive Max+5mph in the left lane, but they can't park worth a damn.

STAY ON YOUR SIDE OF THE RIVER - THANK YOU!

Yeah but winter conditions to a northerner are a bit different.

For a southerner "winter conditions" means a few flakes of snow.

For a northerner winter conditions means the road is covered in a sheet of frictionless black ice that is hidden by a thin layer of snow.

Southerners don't even go outside when it's like that.

I have been driving in Maine winters for 20 years, this was the fastest i have ever seen black ice form. Driving from the Patriots game back home at about midnight or so we started seeing cars going off the road like crazy, I too, went into a 540 degree spin at the I295 toll plaza. Luckily the roads were scarce of other drivers. I put it in 4-wheel and slowed way down after that. I loathe black ice.

two lane road with a double yellow stripe. no shoulder, just trees or a drop down to a river. nowhere to go, and nobody of course could be bothered to slow down.

FAILURE TO REDUCE SPEED TO AVOID AN ACCIDENT.

2009-12-14 03:21:17 PM
Just a bunch of assholes driving like bats out of hell in slick conditions. SOP in New England.

Reminds me of the time a Maine state trooper went blowing by me on the ME Turnpike a few years ago with slush covering the interstate. Ten minutes later, I found him off the road on a ditch. I laughed and gave him the finger.

State troopers in New England are just as useless as everyone else on the road.

/yeah, yeah, cool story bro

Plenty of northerners suck at driving in the winter too. Without any basis, I blame the popularity of SUVs and people who think that 4WD/AWD means that you can drive 90mph on ice.

I was on the NY Thruway yesterday when the rain turned to sleet, it was a mess. Most people were going 30-40mph in the right lane between Utica and Schenectady, but there were still douchebags going 70 in the left lane, and plenty of them ended up in the ditch a few miles up ahead. And tailgating, too, without realizing that in a split second, the car you're tailgating can end up spinning around and coming right back at you.

2009-12-14 03:22:13 PM
Nobody can drive on ice. The only difference between northerners and southerners is that northerners think they know how to drive on it.

And exactly how much driving in snow conditions is required for a driver's license? Or in the rain? And how much accident avoidance is practiced in driver's ed? Because the capabilities/limits of your vehicle should not be learned in an emergency situation.

Most driver's out there are terrible, and it's because most driver's out there have pathetic driver's education. The system needs to change.

You can't tell from the pictures, but the CT110 is actually quite steep and the pile up was just behind a corner. Drivers were coming down around the corner at about 30mph and slamming on the brakes and the road was completely ice.

A very very small version of this happened to me yesterday afternoon running out for beer.

Got on the parkway and was cruising along and saw the red tail lights ahead.

I slowed down as did the guy in front of me in a volvo. As we approached the group of cars already stopped, the volvo slid across both lanes (left to right) went up on the grass spun and managed to correct himself behind the other cars. I wanted to high five the guy for making it through without hitting anything.

I was shytting bricks as the next group of cars approached from behind me. I figured if any of them slid on the black ice i was gonna get nailed. Lucky enough everyone inched forward and got by the accident.

While I am routinely amazed at how many people drive horribly in winter weather (flooring it when stuck, going fast downhill, extremely slow uphill, etc) I am certain that what occured here was completely unavoidable for the majority of drivers. Probably low visibility due to the rural road and the weather, and by the time the pileup was apparent, every driver involved was already on ice and could not stop.

2009-12-14 03:26:48 PM
I've driven extensively throughout New England, the NY Metro area, and all over the I-95 Corridor down to Florida. And my observation has always been that the further south you drive, the BETTER the drivers. New England is horrendous, NY is bad but predictable, DC is jammed but the drivers themselves are competent...and so it goes until you get to Florida. Then all hell breaks loose again. I can only assume it's because 90% of Floridians are from New England & NY.

Example: There were 2 major accidents in NJ yesterday, both far up north & involving black ice. One was 19 cars, the other was 7--still almost HALF the bad drivers as the one in TFA.
