Hmmm ... so he can't do stand up? He's a pretty good guitarist, and several of his interviews are hilarious.

His interviews are great.. and didn't BB King ask him to play alongside him?
If BB King thinks you're good enough to play with him, then god dammit, you're freaking good.
If you know some of the comedy scene, then you know that Mayer has had an affection for standup for a while now.

He is a pretty Goddamned good guitarist. Maybe he's a shiatty songwriter (I don't know any of his songs except that 'Body is a Wonderland' vomit,) but he can play the hell out of that guitar.

Ohhhh is this the thread where we talk trash about Mayer, even though he's widely considered to be a brilliant guitar player, panty moistener and all around nice guy cause none of us will ever have his talent, live in his world, or moisten the counteless panties of the masses?

GOODIE!

I remember that article, it came after a retarded interview featuring questions like this:
What do you think about health care? Would you take the public option?
Have you ever heard me play guitar? I'm really farking good. You know what I'm bad at? Answering questions about public health care. This is not in my wheelhouse. Do you have any questions about music?

One of the local free daily newspapers in my town has a section that includes "interesting" Twitter tweets and John Mayer always has some kind of quote. It's usually something stupid that only a 14 year old girl would think was funny. This is another reason why I hate John Mayer. The guy's a self-centered media whore.

Well, if only John Mayer wasn't a straight white boy (?), then being unfunny and racist would actually be a great foundation for a standup career.

Yeah, he probably had to choke down all his racist hate to stand there with him.

The guy is insanely talented. I just cannot stand his music. Actually, I cannot stand any white guys singing softly over acoustic guitar. That style just puts me to sleep. See also Dave Matthews.

I agree that the John Mayer, Dave Matthews, and Jack Johnson types can all rot in hell, but what about your Neil Youngs, your Bob Dylans, or your Paul Simons? Those are just white guys singing softly over acoustic guitar, generally. The difference being they could write better songs, they didn't all try to sing in the exact same voice, and the fanbase you'd typically find at their concerts wasn't every douchebag you knew in high school.

Just because the media fall over themselves to report inane things he does doesn't mean that he does inane things so that the media will report on them.

That was classic.

Not much of a musician? You obviously never heard the John Mayer Trio! John can play the hell out of his guitar! He's got a great voice, he plays a wide variety of music styles, he participates in a lot of philanthropies, and he seems accessible with his comedy. Methinks subby is a wee bit jealous of someone else's success...

This is just another one of those "i'm sayin this to be cool; I'm hatin this to be cool" kinda things.

When a John Mayer song comes on the radio, it's a crapshoot; sometimes I'm in the mood to hear one of his honest songs, and sometimes I don't. But he's far from being untalented. Just because someone *doesn't like* his music that doesn't mean he's not talented.

Talentless? Take a peek at beyonce or britney spears. That's what it looks like.

And oh yea...whenever I see the word "racist" nowadays, I pretty much think the opposite, and view the person whose tongue it rolls off of as a douche, and the bad one.

IKanHazaBukkit: We're all racist just depends to what extent you are.

Exactly. It's as natural as greed, envy, wrath, sloth, etc. and arose for the same evolutionary reasons.

People we consider "good" have less of it, or work to repress it. People who have more of it we scorn (or demonize to make ourselves feel better)

John Mayer on the radio is very different from John Mayer on cd/live.

2009-12-14 05:08:39 PM
Oh, come on, he's funny enough! He just said a dumb thing to a thin skinned brown fella- we've all been there.

I don't think that makes him racist at all. It's just easy to offend people these days.

Also, seems like the writer of the article was more upset by this than anyone else.

For the obvious reasons.

Now, Nanjiani was careful last night not to accuse Mayer of being a racist, nor does he seem to hold a real grudge against Mayer; rather, he was just relating a hilariously surreal story of a recent stand-up gig to a bunch of comedy nerds (like us!). However, in the video below, revered local comedian Eugene Mirman doesn't shy away from calling Mayer an "accidental racist" at the 4:25 mark: we found a guy to give us the soundbyte we wanted.

That foreigner is no Aziz Ansari, though, so it doesn't matter. Every time that dude's in a flick, at least "Funny People" and "Observe & Report", I squirt milk out of my nose. He's fricken hilarious.

No, he was onstage and playing up a storm a few nights ago at his new club at the Mirage. He's still awesome.

Jesus, calm down. You realize that someone can be insanely talented and still be a douche, right? And that pointing out said douchey behavior is not necessarily the result of some kind of deep seated jealousy of that person.

I disagree. Kanye West is farking hilarious. Maybe not intentionally hilarious, but that man actually got me to watch a clip from the MTV VMAs, which I don't think has ever happened before.

/Also, some of his songs are pretty good, if you ignore the terrible lyrics
//He also remade scenes from Akira with himself as Tetsuo in one of his music videos, which is some kind of awesome

John Mayer is more amusing than most celebrity types and he is talented. Surely there will be a lot of haters. I don't have a single song of his on my iPod but I did go to one of his blues shows with a friend of mine that loves him. He only played two songs that I know from the radio and when I left the show with my friend I said, "damn that kid can play the guitar!"

/also, that didn't seem racist
