Who knew crowd surfing in the library would get you maced?

Who knew?

So, uh, what exactly was the reason for the flash mob gathering? The article lacks essential details.

2009-12-12 05:50:53 PM
I think they completely missed the entire farking point of the whole "flashmob" concept. There's nothing flash about that. It's just a mob. Standing around screaming "WEEEEEEEEEE-HOOOOOOO!" and jumping on each others' heads isn't exactly creative. These lunk-headed morons are the official last nail in the coffin for the whole thing. What's next? "No, officer. We aren't rioting in the street because we just won a basketball game. It's performance art!"

The only damage the school is reporting, was to a SKU detector in the library.

Talentless flash mobs are brilliant, lots of people go to one place and do nothing.

State_College_Arsonist: So, uh, what exactly was the reason for the flash mob gathering? The article lacks essential details.

My understanding of the point of Flash Mobs is that there is no point to them. They are supposed to appear to be a seemingly random and brief event that will bring a smile to your face with out an agenda or message.

I have a friend who just participated in one last month during a Christmas Tree lighting ceremony...and yes it did bring a smile to my face watching it.

2009-12-12 05:52:58 PM
Flash mobs jumped the shark years ago. There's only so many times you can watch a bunch of college students pretend to be zombies or have a pillow fight. The level of creativity is depressing.

mace != pepper spray

2009-12-12 05:53:58 PM
So I guess the officers' thinking went like this:
-They're crowd surfing, someone could get hurt if they fall!
-Lets spray them in the face so they are sure to let the crowd surfers down carefully!

So in conclusion the police definitely put more thought into the whole situation than the idiot students.

So another story where if the cops had kepts their mouths shut and not been assholes, everything would have been OK.

"They're using technology to do different things to meet in person again," said Potts.

I read that in Adam West's Batman voice, as if "technology" were some fiendishly evil weapon that the Penguin and Joker had devised.

I remember the LA flash mobs.

2009-12-12 06:05:47 PM
I don't think the cops should have brutalized the crowd but...

Improv Everywhere and flash mobs are so tired I can't believe anyone still thinks this is something to do. They always claim they are trying to make life interesting for people around them but it's really just to entertain themselves and irritate the people around them.

Makes me proud to be an ODU student right now
What the article doesn't point out is that a few choice geniuses were setting off fire extinguishers. This led to quite a few books getting basically destroyed. Leave it to ODU to take something one step too far

2009-12-12 06:09:14 PM
Hmm. 5 police officers can't be heard by a crowd of hundreds and decide to get their attention... with peeper spray. So now the police have assaulted hundreds of people and are very lucky the crowd did not turn on them.

I see this happening just like an overzealous cop at a traffic stop. You're not listening/hearing my instructions so I'm going to taze you. It may work against a person or two but could have resulted in much property damage, injuries or deaths when you are outnumbered 100:1.

Brilliant.

/Respect mah authorahtah

2009-12-12 06:09:46 PM
Yeah... that really wasn't a flash mob.

When I think of flash mobs I think coordination like... freezing all at the same time, dancing to "Thriller" or something like that.

This was just a large crowd of people gathering together to pretend like they were dancing... no real coordination other than show up at this place at this time.

2009-12-12 06:10:45 PM
They should have used tasers. Watching YouTube clips of flash mobbers doing the chicken dance would never get old.

I don't think you quite understand the definition of assault.

Anyways, this never would have happened if it weren't for the farking crowd surfers. Show up, party, chant, fine... But once you start climbing over people and kicking them in the head, you deserve a face full of pepper spray.

"police were concerned people could get hurt. Five ODU police officers tried to yell the crowd out of the library, but five couldn't out yell hundreds. The decision was made to bring out the pepper spray and officers were caught on tape spraying it"

Look for 'police intelligence' under Oxymoron.....

2009-12-12 06:22:24 PM
So, you think someone might get hurt. Clearly, the correct reaction is to use pepper spray, which is guaranteed to cause a panic and almost certain to make someone get hurt.

/The cops are lucky no one was crushed to death.

2009-12-12 06:22:48 PM
Cop 1: There are a lot of people in this library.
Cop 2: Let's spray a chemical irritant in the air, causing people to want to leave suddenly, running and crowding to the exits!
Cop 1: Sounds good to me!

2009-12-12 06:24:30 PM
Methinks a bullhorn should have been used before the pepper spray. Hope they're fired for gross stupidity.

2009-12-12 06:25:27 PM
Using their Police Enforcement logic, if they thought someone might die they would have had to start shooting people at random.

People saying that "nothing would have happened if the police didn't pepper spray them" have never seen the amazing ability large groups of people have to keep getting more and more stupid.

Mardi Gras in New Orleans is a great example. You can drink till you fall down and women are running around topless all within five feet of the police with no problems. For some stupid reason people just have to keep upping the stupidity till they get arrested. My favorites were a couple having sex on the street, a guy who offered a cop a hit from his joint and one guy who tried peeing on a cop car.

How Not to Write a News Story 101: make sure not to include any details about what was actually going on.

There's a reference in there to crowd surfing but the story never actually says exactly what the flash mob's stunt actually was. Some sort of instant rent-a-crowd party, presumably, but it would kinda nice to know.

Jakevol2: My understanding of the point of Flash Mobs is that there is no point to them. They are supposed to appear to be a seemingly random and brief event that will bring a smile to your face with out an agenda or message.

-I know what a flash mob is, I just want to know what this particular flash mob was supposed to do. Showing up and standing around is rather uninspired.

I know that was a typo, but I'm now interested in practical applications of peeper spray.

yes because a flash mob with set behavioural parameters is comparable to a festival that is used to act out debauchery. totally the same thing, i'm only left to wonder why they're not fully armed to seek and destroy, like another big group called "military" that occassionally gets together for activities.

2009-12-12 06:45:12 PM
Raise the standards for cops - including universities. Anybody who hurts a person to prevent that person from getting hurt is just not doing it right.

2009-12-12 06:47:06 PM
"Once the crowd surfing started, police were concerned people could get hurt. "

So, let's spray them with pepper spray. Never underestimate the intelligence of the police.

2009-12-12 06:48:46 PM
Wow. Clearly the police started a riot. Fire them! Or send them to prison with the same penalty any citizen would get for attacking people and inciting violence in a crowd.
