This is why the Nazis were bad, mmmkay? Because they did shiat like remove your kidney without any anesthetic.

I don't blame him; I doubt I'd ever want to see a doctor again after something unimaginably horrific.

Hey, let's make unwarranted comparisons between our political opponents and the Nazis. Because a public option for healthcare is exactly like the story recounted in the article.

This guy Godwinned his own health. That's a new one for me.

Sucks to loose a kidney, especially when taken under a regime considered the loser in battle.

Keep this in mind next time you have elective surgery!!! Might outlast your current countries influence and then become a footnote in the failed empire.

All of us are on the brink of a failed empire, 2012 might become a reality. All you Ostrichtes might do well moving to the left and hiding the next 30 years to rise up and become a news-story in the future. Maybe only wait 20 years as current spending methods end will be sooner at present rate.

History is written by the victors, and the lime light placed on the pawns. Not condoning Germany's role in WW2, just stating the obvious. Some parts really bad in WW2, other parts simply happened. 60 years from now might be surprised at history in USA concerning the current situations.

Hey, You. You're a scumbag. I hope you and your fellow INDEPENDENT AMERICAN HEROES go lock yourselves in a room and teabag each other to death. Because in broken brains someone attempting healthcare=nazis. I'm sure anyone ever remotely related to WWII loves hearing you idiots proclaim that on a regular basis.

Yeah, this has always bothered me. If somebody doesn't agree with Obama's ideas, that's fine. Write editorials, protest on the White House lawn, or whatever you want to do. But I'm quite certain that Obama's government will never:

a) Send your family to death camps
b) Tattoo a prisoner number on your arm
c) Remove a kidney without anesthetic
d) Then conduct another horrific experiment involving an ice-bath and breathing

PS, this guy is incredibly badass for having survived that; I'd be happy to half a fraction of those cajones.

I remember hearing about death panels on the Bill Maher podcast. I thought it was just gutter satire from silly newspapers. Then I came across it online, looked in to it and realised that there are Americans who actually believe it. I don't get how anyone can be that brain dead.

It's a definite case of Method vs Reward. You cannot deny that in the sum of things, a lot was learned about the human body, it's limits, and it's reactions. The definitely negative side to everything that it came at the cost of immense suffering/death, and all around inhumane treatment.

Holy crap, I'll never complain about being sick again!

Two questions for the adults that might happen across this thread:

1) As what age is it appropriate to discuss the darker side of WWII?

2) Would it be rude to post a Craigslist ad looking for a survivor that would share their story with myself and my son?

E.S.Q.

1) As what age is it appropriate to discuss the darker side of WWII?

I told my son as soon as he was old enough to get it. I'll keep telling him too.

2) Would it be rude to post a Craigslist ad looking for a survivor that would share their story with myself and my son?

I think it could be spamming.

I seem to remember about 15 or 20 years ago a med student was reading a text book (Mengele experiment) and realized it was talking about his grandmother.

In America, his claim would have been denied by his for-profit health insurance company due to having a pre-existing condition, or for not having seen a doctor since before the doctor he did see was born, or something equally asinine.

/Also, having read NBG's post without having seen the pic, i assume he's just taking a cheap shot at the teabaggers who hold up signs that say stuff like "National Socialist Health Care LOL"

If you're serious, EIP; as a Jew I've got a few relatives that are willing to share their experiences. No promises but I'll see what I can do.

Until I was about 16 or 17, my family lived across the street from a WWII vet that was a fairly high-ranking guy whose group was one of the first to discover the atrocities of the death camps. I once interviewed him for a school project, and his story was absolutely horrific and fascinating. He was right there on D-day, with Nazi bullets flying at him.

At the conclusion of the interview, he took me to his basement and showed me some photo albums of pictures he took when they arrived at the concentration camps. No words could describe it.

It's my understanding he's made arrangements for his photos be donated to the Holocaust Museum after his death.

"Death Panels" are a highly emotionally charged description for something that we have in the UK: NICE (National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence).

The job of NICE is to decide what treatments are paid for, and which aren't and they do it in quite a mathematical way based on how many more months of quality life a treatment gives vs the cost of the treatment.

If you have socialised healthcare, you have to have NICE (or kid yourself that all healthcare can be provided).
