It has to be perfect and cost a lot of money.
That's the X-Mas spirit.

They could have saved even more money by not decorating the tree at all with taxpayer money.

He said the city would have ended up spending about $23,000 for a cut tree had they not opted to use the one growing in Todos Santos Plaza.

Yeah, I'll save and remember that complete and utter shiat when I file taxes in a few months...

FTA: The city chose the tree over other fuller trees in the plaza because of its location near an electrical outlet and away from the road.

Now, if only there were some sort of... Electrical "cord" which acted as an "extension" that they could use. An "Extension-cord," if you will.

Screw you. You're exactly the kind of mongo who whines endlessly about property taxes and local government waste. Well, suck on it Weaver. This Xmas, the tree is a "tax whiner" special.

"This thing looks like it's dead and it's leaning over," Concord resident Bill Gram-Reefer said Wednesday. "It just doesn't evoke a Christmas tree to me."

Shut the fark up Bill!

It's not such a bad little tree.

2009-12-12 12:00:39 AM
I have a hard time believing that it costs 23 grand to cut down a farkin tree.

Good, no money and already in debt? STOP THE farkING SPENDING.
Everyone should learn from this. Spending with debt will lead to all wealth being with the banks in short time.

Awww....it just needs a little love!

/And do you REALLY need to chop down a tree? Just leave it where it is and decorate it!!! Then take down the trimmings and VOILA!!! Tree still grows!!! No messy needles! No burning tree!!! No tree recycling!!! Noel!! Noel!!

Anyone who thinks the town should have spent the 23,000 on a tree which is probably only 4 or 5 grand less than an administrative person's yearly salary really needs to sort out their priorities.

The tree makes a statement. I like it.

I don't care what the "Old guard" thinks. It's time to innovate, and challenge the status quo. Skeptics may claim that "Electricity doesn't work that way," but who are you going to believe... Numbers on a piece of paper, or people?

As soon as we're done laughing at this obviously ironic (we hope) "Christmas" tree, Kylah and I will be taking the kids in to watch the Charlie Brown Christmas Special on Blu-Ray. Thank God we haven't forgotten what Christmas is really about.

mrnewt: I'm thinking subby didn't actually read the article.

That's true. I heard the story, got the town named, GISed and postedthe first one that popped up. Yeah you're right, looks like they didn't cut it down. But damned if they don't need to, look at that thing.

I was told they chose a tree they were going to cut down anyway and used it. To be honest leaving that pathetic-looking thing in the ground and stringing lights on it is even funnier. It almost looks deciduous.

2009-12-12 12:57:46 AM
I'm just confused why they the told people it was because of lacking funds. They should had simply said they wanted a "green Christmas" by using a living tree. One that wouldn't have to be cut down so that it would neutralize the carbon created by making the electricity to light it. Then tell anybody who complained they obviously "aren't thinking of the children."

I grew up in Concord. I went and saw the tree the other day. It's not so bad. It's just brown because of the boron in the well water used to water the park. It will be green again in spring.

People whine too much.

Anyway, shiatty X-mas trees are the least of Concord's problems.

I've got my official Charlie Brown Pathetic Tree(tm)(r)(c) brought to you by Urban Outfitters(tm)(r)(c) set up in the living room. Not the little $15 tree they have now but the bigger, far more expensive one from a few years back. I wouldn't spend $40 on it so a friend gave it to me for xmas. It's saved me way more than $40 over the years that would have been spent on live trees.

The funny thing is everyone immediately knows the Charlie Brown tree. It never needs an explanation and everyone loves it. If those people don't like their Charlie Brown tree, then they should take up a collection and pay for a "proper" themselves. Better yet, collect $23,000 and donate it to a charity that helps poor kids have a decent holiday.

Ok, I'm sorry...

But if I got my tree for $39.99 at Target, how in the hell could it cost this town $23,000 to get one?

Because trees that are twenty feet high do NOT, in fact, cost $39.99.

Typical liberal local government mark up. Haven't you learned anything yet? I'm so tired of this trivial crap. You guys voted these people into power and let them run our country into the ground, and this is what you get. It's just unfortunate that people like me who tried to stop you from shooting yourselves in the foot were ignored. Thank Obama. That's all I have to say. This is your hope. A cheap assed dead christmas tree. Happy Kwanzaa.

Yes, I understand that. But 23K? Somebody needs to learn how to go tree shopping.

My in-laws have a huge foyer with a staircase, and they have a tree that is about 14 feet tall. I can damn sure tell you they didn't spent 15-20k on it.

Yeah, that is a good number of years of growing time. And what 20? That thing looked more to be 35-50 to me. But then again, I've been drinking.

Sure, I can sell you a 24.97 tree that's about 7 feet tall, but even out 12 footers jump up to about 200.

I think it's cute. And when they've laid people off, they shouldn't be spending money on a cut tree because it looks better. FFS, people, that's not what Christmas is all about.

How could it be so?
It came without ribbons! It came without tags!
It came without packages, boxes, or bags!
And he puzzled and puzzled, till his puzzler was sore.
Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn't before!
"Maybe Christmas," he thought, "doesn't come from a store.
Maybe Christmas... perhaps... means a little bit more."

/Also, those of you calling for an extension cord, it could be that it simply isn't safe to run a long extension cord across the plaza (and possibly across a road? I don't know the layout) to light up the tree. I'm pretty sure the city is aware of the existence of extension cords and I would guess this is a safety issue.

Good for them.

I don't get why the hell towns pay for decorations anyway... it's a waste of money to buy, install, take down, store, electricity. It has no benefit (people don't shop more because of decorations), it's just wasting cash.

Now with cities struggling to make payroll... why the heck should they be spending a penny on decorations.

And I'm not just talking about Christmas... 4th of July, memorial day, labor day, etc. It's just wasteful bullshiat.

If people and groups (churches, veterans organizations) really want decorations, let them pay for the cost from their own funds... they are tax exempt anyway.

I just don't see why tax dollars are being spent on the most frivolous of expenses while things like pothole repair, bridge maintenance and people's paychecks are in jeopardy. And even if they aren't cash strapped... no better places for that cash? Like shaving a few cents off taxes?

Strikes me as stupid.

Same goes for the [ethnicity/religion/sexual orientation/hair color/skin color] day parade (cops, street closings, etc.) in places where gov picks up part of the tab.

And I'm not even a conservative... I just think some basic farking priorities are in order.
