nice boobies, but what do they have to do with H1N1 vaccine.
Are we using carrier boobies for H1N1?

I highly doubt a dose of dead virus right into your deltoid muscle gave you the flu. Considering it's, well, IMPOSSIBLE.

Who knew the Flu vaccine was susceptible to common cold?

2009-12-11 11:43:40 PM
I refuse to get that shot or any other flu shot. I don't usually get sick anyways, and the last time I got the flu shot (G**D*** Navy docs and the BS regs making me do it), I broke out in hives... so no more shots for me.

I used to have a friend in the medical dept who would always pencil me in for having recieved the shot, so it never happened until we got transferred to different commands... lol

As a resident of the frozen white north I have to ask how they didn't account for this freezing issue, also, why isn't there a way to ship vaccine and not let it freeze. It's not like they're shipping lumber, there's not all that much material to keep warm.

Well, I got the shot, and two days later had one of the worst cases of flu ever. Either it made me sick, or it didn't farking work. Either way, more for YOU.

I also got sick as hell from the skin tests they do for allergies. Found I was allergic to a lot of stuff. And that crap made me sick as hell.

While it won't give you the flu, in that you are being injected with flu virus. But it may weaken your immune system a bit, letting something else get past your defenses.

I got the H1N1 shot. My doctor acted casual about it, even though I know people who are freaking out about not getting it yet. By casual, I mean: "no big deal; we have zillions of doses here"

Oh. I didn't want it, but I relented under his...coaxing. I never get sick, so shouldn't someone ELSE get the shot? Someone who needs it? Or a psycho person?

You may be wondering at this point why I was at the doctor's office to begin with. A physical. Why? To make sure he hasn't missed anything. I'll donate myself to science when I die at 144 so you all can study my perfection. :) Oh. Or rather your great-grandchildren.

Or its possible that he got a virus that the flu shot doesn't cover. After all, there are multiple strands of the flu. The current flu vaccine is a mix of some of the more common flu viruses but the rarer strains are often left out. And then there are strains that have yet to be discovered, or have mutated to be immune to antibodies, forcing the immune system to start the immunization process from the beginning.

Um. No, that's not true - despite what Generation Rescue wants you to think. The only batch that caused an "extraordinarily high number of allergic reactions" was a batch that was released in Canada that had been contaminated by bacterial growth. That batch was recalled.

What they need is a series of tubes. Pneumoniatic tubes.

I dunno, that's pretty impressive for a virus, most of them don't even have a digestive tract nor have a taste for gatorade.

Good thing it just visited and didn't decide to infect you.

It takes a week or two for your body to build an immunity to the flu after getting the shot. If you got sick two days later with the flu, you already had gotten the live virus in your system some other way before getting the shot and that's what had affected you. This can actually happen. What can't happen is getting the flu from the flu shot because the flu shot is already a dead virus. You can get some slight fever/pains for a day or so if your body decides to go all apeshiat on the dead virus, but that's it.

Moreover, was it the actual flu, or was it the "stomach flu?" The stomach flu isn't actually the flu at all.

2009-12-12 08:51:09 AM
What I don't get is I live in North Dakota, we've had highs barely reaching 0 for the past week and they opened up this week to pretty much everyone and our local health district is getting supply fairly regularly.

One day a few weeks ago they did have to throw some shipment out because it got frozen. Maybe we learned back then that it needs to be kept warm, but no one else did??

I had written this up for a swine flu headline that showed up yesterday, only to have it vanish into TF-land while I was writing the comment. I'm just gonna leave this here, because I hate seeing people chatter on about swine flu when they don't know much about it:

As a microbiology and immunology graduate student, I'm not getting a kick out of these replies.

H1N1 (aka "swine flu") is not the deadliest thing. It's actually been a somewhat common serotype of the seasonal flu every so often. Because flu strains can mix and match their genes between human strains and other animal strains, we become cautious when new rearrangements of the genes show up in human infections; in the past, these new rearrangements have led to outbreaks. This H1N1 is a new rearrangement, and that's a part of the caution.

However, that isn't the determinative part of the morbidity associated with the flu. There's a mutant strain of this H1N1 floating around out there that is the culprit behind the deaths. Most hospitals won't bother serotyping unless you get fairly sick; even then, just because you have H1N1 doesn't mean you have the deadly strain. The problem is that discovery requires sequencing, and there's no resources for serotyping and sequencing the bugs of everyone who shows up at a hospital with flu-like symptoms.

Yes, this mutant H1N1 is bad. In the animal models, it causes far more pathology than the seasonal H1N1; more death, more lung damage.

So why aren't more people dying? A good question, and I can't really answer it. The animal models show that the mutant H1N1 is just as transmissible, but the science behind animal models and flu transmission is still being developed, so that data is taken with a grain of salt. Additionally, since some animals don't develop the advanced pathology from the mutant H1N1, it's difficult to say why the virus is so harmful. There might be individual genetic differences involved in the response, but it hasn't been identified what that might be yet (AFAIK).

So, take that as you want. The only practical thing I can add is that you shouldn't panic if you get sick, and you should go to the hospital if you get really sick. But for crying out loud, people, don't try to pretend like this isn't a big deal just because you think you had the flu but didn't die. This has the potential to be quite harmful.
