Martinez whipped the 9mm machine pistol out from under his jacket and fired two rounds before the gun jammed.

Ok, up until that point, the article made it sound like the lobby scene from the Matrix.

Sgt Otter: Shooting someone in the leg does not impair their ability to squeeze a trigger."

plus this:

as he fired four times, hitting Martinez in the chest, collar bone and both arms.

But even the 17-year veteran's bullets didn't stop the thug, who struggled with the officers as he lay bleeding -- but still clutching his weapon.

"I saw two cops holding one guy down. They were wrestling to get the gun out of his hand,"

The guy was shot four times, including one in the chest, and he still was holding the gun and fighting the cops. that's why you don't shoot to wound

When they asked Martinez -- who had a bench warrant out for his arrest -- for ID and the tax stamp required to sell CDs legally, he bolted down Seventh Avenue.

Justice would have said your punk kid shouldn't have been out on the streets in the first place, lady.

This all seems a little over the top for a god damned CD slinger. Regardless. Only an idiot shoots to wound when someone has a gun. Especially in a crowded area like this. Turn off the TV and live in the real world for awhile.

With the officers just seven feet away, Martinez whipped the 9mm machine pistol out from under his jacket and fired two rounds before the gun jammed.

It's a lucky thing for the cops that this shiathead was also too stupid to clean this gun, load it properly and/or know how to use it.

Why couldn't the cops have just shot the gun out of his hand? And why couldn't one of them have been Chow Yun Fat and jumped on him from like 8 stories up? Damn NYPD.

what_now: What the fark is a "machine pistol"? Is that one of those made up terms like "assault weapon"?

Those are both real terms, the latter usually being used incorrectly.

The MAC-10, when fully-automatic, is in fact a machine pistol. The Glock 18 is one, also. This one may have been a semi-auto version of the MAC-10.

Much like "Snuggie" it's just a way of describing something for dramatical influence. Would you buy a "zebra-print robe that you wear backwards" if it were described as such?

Ok, you don't want to compare anything w/ a snuggie, because I think the only people who own one are people who are too stupid to operate a blanket. I'd like to imagine that most gun owners are smarter than that.

In Turkey the special services are trained to shoot for the eye: instant kill. Also this means as they die immediately there is no odds that they will discharge as they die. US police should do the same. A shot in the body is not a guaranteed kill: brain/eye is. Unless you;re Chuck Norris ;)

No, I take that back, some legitimate questions might be asked on why the cops didn't KEEP shooting him until he stopped moving, why officers possibly endangered themselves trying to wrestle a gun from a still-armed opponent, or why they didn't shoot the brother like they are trained to since he did attack and tried to wrestle a gun from a police officer.

All in all, they seemed to show a lot of restraint from the article. Maybe even too much for their own safety and that of passerby.

/doesn't know shiat about guns

It's basically a front grip, for two-handed operation during 3-round burst fire. You'll notice that the trigger guard is unusually large. You'd use your main hand to grip it normally. Then with your off-hand, you'd slip the thumb into the front of the trigger-guard (in front of your trigger finger), and wrap your fingers around the folding grip in the front, for extra stability.

AnthraxRipple: what_now: What the fark is a "machine pistol"? Is that one of those made up terms like "assault weapon"?

Those are both real terms, the latter usually being used incorrectly.

The MAC-10, when fully-automatic, is in fact a machine pistol. The Glock 18 is one, also. This one may have been a semi-auto version of the MAC-10.

It could have (legally) had burst fire enabled by the original owner or (illegally) been modified to have full auto enabled, since the model is capable. It stopped from a jam, so you can't necessarily tell from the info in the article.

//Yes, you still shoot to kill when your opponent's gun is jammed, for anyone intending to bring that one up. A jam takes about half a second to clear and then you're back to firing... assuming you're not an idiot like the dude in the article.

Given the inaccuracy inherent in shooting during a combat situation, a shot that strikes a part of the body is better than a shot that misses, hence the emphasis on hitting center of mass. FTA Cops said he was one of a group of hustlers who were working a scam in which they would approach tourists, ask them their names, then write the names on the CDs and demand $10.

Investigators found that the aspiring rapper, who performed with the group Square Free and went by the name "Ready," frequented gun shows and was carrying business cards from several gun shops.

I got hit up by one of these guys last time I was in the city. I was walking by and he just stuck the CD in my chest. I'm usually prone to just letting those things drop by now but for whatever reason i was out of my element and actually grabbed it. As I walked I heard behind me "my man, let me sign, i'll give u my autograph"

So i was like whatever, he takes it back and asks for my name. I give a nickname i have (not my fark handle, but basically like one). So then he starts signing and was like "yo man, im helpin promote by business any type of donation you got man, like anything $10, $20".

I was like 20 bucks wha???? "I'm sorry I can't give a donation. No. I'm not donating"

I was taller and slightly more jacked than the thug so he didn't try anything more than a "my man.. my man..." as I walked away, but I could see him being more intimidating to others.

haha.. now He's dead!

I kept wondering what the hell he was going to do with that CD now that My names was markered in. lol

You're right, just like how our special forces are taught to deliver two shots to the body and one to the head, and most SF's can do the head first and body shots second.

BUT we're not talking about special forces, we're talking about normal everyday cops. You can't train them over and over to shoot for the eye, there aren't enough resources/competent cops to try and achieve that. You aim for the biggest part of the body, the chest. I guarantee that's what the cop who shot did, and you can see where his other 3 shots landed (2 in arms, one in collarbone).

Because when you shoot you shoot to stop which means centre mass. All that shooting in the leg is either hollywood bullshirt or bad aim. The closest you get to that is a stand off with someone who is attempting "suicide by cop". Sharpshooters are trained to shoot the weapon out of their hands if possible.

When you pull a weapon on someone they're authorized to defend themselves. Just because your weapon jammed it doesn't mean you're not a threat. A pull on the bolt will put you back in action so they're going to try and stop you before you can do that. To do that you shoot centre mass until they're stopped.

Now, nobody should be shot for selling bootleg CDs. But if you pull a weapon on a cop then maybe you need that bullet in your ass.

You know who else used this pistol...

Come quietly or there will be... trouble.

However, when you see Bloomberg and Kelly on TV wanting to sue gun dealers in Virginia over gun sales, and the NRA and others rail at the move, please remember what HWC posted. Scumbag gun dealers (not legitimate ones) will make a "straw man" sale to an individual with Virginia residency who passes background checks. Then that person as an individual will sell the gun to another person (a criminal) on a person-to-person basis. This type of sale requires no background check, no residency check, and no report to anyone of the sale. The ATF investigate and prosecute stuff like this all the time. He's lucky he didn't get a bullet.

what_now: What the fark is a "machine pistol"? Is that one of those made up terms like "assault weapon"?

Real term. It's a full-auto version of a pistol, although I strongly suspect this was actually a semi-auto version.

Doctor Funkenstein: Sgt Otter: Beretta 93R 9mm Machine Pistol.

Does that thing have a little knife on it? That's kind of overkill, isn't it? WTF is that thing?

/doesn't know shiat about guns

It's a grip to help control it. I'm sure you've seen how people's hands jerk back when they fire a handgun. (The same thing applies to any gun but it's not so obvious if it's against your shoulder.) For firing a single round this bothers the shooter but doesn't affect the bullet. With autofire, though, this will keep happening. The gun will rapidly climb and you'll be shooting nothing but the sky. (Or in the case of that kid a while back it came all the way around and shot him.) Thus an extra grip to help hold it on target.

BesiktasBoy83: No_One_Special: You don't aim for limbs. You don't "shoot to wound". Guns are deadly weapons, designed to kill. When someone is shooting one, cops are trained to shoot to kill. Anyone who trains with firearms trains to aim for center mass.

None of these concepts are difficult to comprehend.

In Turkey the special services are trained to shoot for the eye: instant kill. Also this means as they die immediately there is no odds that they will discharge as they die. US police should do the same. A shot in the body is not a guaranteed kill: brain/eye is. Unless you;re Chuck Norris ;)

HotWingConspiracy: T.M.S.: HotWingConspiracy: T.M.S.: The NY Post was the "news" source that invented the word "wilding" to scare white people during the CP Jogger days. They knew that was not what those kids said but it sounded so good so they went with it.

I hate The Post, but you couldn't possibly be more wrong.

Please explain how I am wrong?

They didn't invent the term wilding during the Central Park jogger days. Or at all. Ever.

From Pete Hamill, NY Post 1989

"Wilding - the newest term for terror in a city that lives in fear," announced the New York Post on
April 22. "Wilding" was defined by the Post writers as a phenomenon not unlike the violent raves in
A Clockwork Orange - "packs of bloodthirsty teens from the tenements, bursting with boredom and
rage, roam the streets getting kicks from an evening of ultra-violence."
In his April 23, 1989, piece in the Post, a savage disease, Pete Hamill, the celebrated city
columnist, painted a menacing backdrop that would color the coverage to come:
They were coming downtown from a world of crack, welfare, guns, knives, indifference
and ignorance. They were coming from a land with no fathers .... They were coming
from the anarchic province of the poor.
And driven by a collective fury, brimming with the rippling energies of youth, their
minds teeming with the violent images of the streets and the movies, they had only one
goal: to smash, hurt, rob, stomp, rape. The enemies were rich. The enemies were white.

Of course it was all made up but why let that stop a good fear mongering. That "wilding" crap went on for years and people still believe it.

I blame Tone-Loc

Yes. You are correct. Owning a machine pistol that is illegal where you live (and if fully automatic, Federally illegal to own), and keeping it in a loaded state at your home with a child around is perfectly excusable. And when your husband brandishes it in a public space and fires off rounds, it is completely understandable. While I agree about the straw purchases, I sort of doubt that was the case here. Assuming the firearm in question was the real deal(And it looks like that is the case, you don't see fire selectors on civilian models generally) you would have to be a raging idiot to sell a 'legal'(ie. licensed and registered) select-fire weapon for the kind of scratch one might expect some CD bootlegger to possess.

Legal-to-own select fire weapons are a finite pool, as it became impossible to register new ones after.. I forget the year, sometime in the late 70s or early 80s if I remember correctly. Thus they are worth quite a bit of money, and you would make much, much more on your investment by selling one to a legitimate class 3 license holder than some low-life. Most likely this was a black-market piece.

BesiktasBoy83: I'm sorry but eye shot - best way. US cops should spend more time at the range. US is the richest nation of history. If you wanted it to happen then it would.

You watch too many movies (btw, when I think of a professional fighting force, I think of the turks).

Semiauto's take a certain amount of skill to operate. The slightist twitch or quiver will set you off target many feet or even yards down range. Even just the adrenaline rushing through, or maybe a change of grip, will cause your sight picture to change and again set you off many feet. I don't know who am I kidding, not many people in this thread probably know what a "sight picture" is and how it effects your shot.

If you made a hypothetical scenario of a target at 50 feet armed with a submachine gun, and you wanted a shooter to take a trick shot of hitting his arm or shooting the gun out of his hand consistently, I don't think there are many shooters in the world that could possibly consistently do that.

Not to mention, in a crowded street where a miss could ricochet and hit some kid in the eye, it's highly irresponsible.

Seriously bro, I know you probably have good intentions but this isn't hollywood. And when you run your mouth on a site like fark realize there are probably many people who have been in these real world situations and know what it is like.

The woman should get justice in this form: The brother who jumped on the cops while they were trying to apprehend him should be charged with murder. According to the article, he was an accomplice to the original crime, and he was an accomplice to the MAC 10 guy's resisting of arrest. When someone dies in the commission of a felony, most jurisdictions will hold the accomplices guilty of murder, even if the death was one of the accomplices.

So let justice be done here by making sure that a second one of this woman's spawn will be removed from society.

In cases like this, I really wish there was a variation of "aiding and abetting" (or something similar) that covered general lifestyle.

Even if his family didn't actively help him acquire the gun, encourage him to go out and shoot people, or (if he survived) harbored him from the cops, they were still largely responsible for him being a scumbag.

Bootleggers and scam artists are usually not known for their financial responsibility. I wouldn't put it past him to drop 5 large on a mac-10 all while his family lives on the edge of poverty.

Second, remember that while the gun owner can sell it legitimately, he'd have to pay taxes on the sale. If the gun were "stolen" he gets the cash under the table and gets to claim the loss either as a tax write-off or get reimbursed by his insurance. In other words, he gets paid twice if he does it illegally.

chu2dogg: BesiktasBoy83: I'm sorry but eye shot - best way.

I can hit a softball sized target w/ my S&W M&P 9mm every time at 15 yards... at the range...with a second or so to aim after resetting from the recoil. The idea of having to do that while someone else is shooting back is pretty damn daunting.

Oh_Enough_Already: It's a minority mother thing.

Some unique sort of cognitive dissonance that allows them to see their vicious crotch-spawn as precious snowflakes, ghetto style.

These same moms - had their son has been caught red handed comitting this or that crime and said crime was photographed and streamed to the web and witnessed by millions of people, etc etc, etc - STILL contend that "I didn't raise my baby to be no killer, it wasn't him!" etc ad nauseum. (No mum, you didn't "raise" him at all, he was just another couple of hundred bucks on your welfare check whhen you spread your legs to push him out.)

And they come from communities where hundreds of murders a year go unsolved even though there are dozens of witnesses to each crime because coming forward to help solve the murders of their very own is "snitching" and that ain't how they roll.

And we bend over backwards to help these people in any way shape or form why, exactly?

Pretty much my point, plus 5 grand is pissmoney compared to what most registered select-fire firearms will go for. //When seconds count, 911 is only minutes away.
The above "proverb" is not a universal law like E=MC^2.
It's more of an practical approximation. There is a little bubble of planck's constant (by analogy) where quantum effects around the immediate vicinity produce an exception to the seconds/minutes norm. In this very tiny regional space, the cop happens to be there to immediately respond. It's extremely unlikely to occur, however, as criminals are cowardly, and prefer to do their crimes where there are not cops present. This intensifies the probability well diminishing the likelihood of violent crime in the immediate vicinity of a Cop. But it does sometimes happen.

In terms of being defended from violent crime however, normally a cop will be minutes away when you need one. I think if you research murder statistics, you will find that most murders are not committed in the presence of a cop, for example.

Conversely, there may be, at some radius, an increase in the probability of violent crime as you approach the vicinity of a cop. You could be a perp yourself, or perhaps the cop is a perp. Either way, in these cases, the risk does increase. However, this phenomenon does NOT negate that accuracy of the generalization:
When seconds count, 911 is only minutes away.

I believe that someone would attempt that, more than I believe that someone with superior business sense than that would actually leave an NFA weapon on the seat of their car and then just walk away for it to get stolen. And at least in theory, whoever had this gun "stolen" convinced the BATF that this absurd story is the truth, and didn't suffer consequences, meaning it turned out to be worth the risk.

People have done far worse to put less than 5 grand, tax free, loss free, in their pocket. Granted, this isn't the sort of sale a permit holder would make every week, but once during a recession, when you're really hurting? I believe it.

I agree 100%. After the fact we know that the gun jammed, but before hand all a cop knows is a bad guy with no problem shooting up Time Square (2 shots fired) had a potential of 27 more.

I knew it was coming ;D The thing is, they probably don't have a lot of money, (I'm assuming, yes, that people who scam tourists for ten bucks aren't probably rolling in it). So then they'd have to find a contingency lawyer crazy enough to figure it's a case that can be won, because if they don't win the lawyer won't get paid. And, yeah, I suppose there's a few out there but I doubt there are many.

There was a question earlier about why the cops were wrestling the gun away from him rather than shooting again. At the time I didn't realize the answer but it came to me now:

The cops knew the weapon was jammed. There's no way he's going to clear the jam quickly with one hand and if he's down with hands on the opposite side of his body he can't easily bring a second hand to the job. Thus at that point the cops know he doesn't pose an immediate threat and they are free to disarm rather than shoot.

Tap, rack, roll. So long as it's not a double-feed, it takes about a second to clear most of the common jams in a semi-automatic handgun.

If the kid was firing the gun, he should've had both hands on it. With this particular model, racking the action could be done w/ one hand... that knob on the top needs to be pulled back, it could be done w/ the shooter's belt, or likely done by pressing it into the ground or a building wall.

Oh... wow, that sucks. That's all she knows? Well, maybe someone should explain to her that her husband was a thief and scammer that tried to kill 2 cops. That would probably clear up all sorts of confusion. As for the mom, that's the terrible part. I can't bring myself to mock a mother that just lost her kid. They should get a 1-month pass on ridiculous comments. I'm not saying they should be given full credulity, but a simple "I'm sorry for your loss" in response to hysterical comments would be nice. No matter how one believes that she contributed to her kid's ignominious end, a gracious response seems indicated.

Oh, but I can. It's my specialty.

Good! I'm glad her son died, and that she's grieving for her loss. I'm absolutely delighted - no, enthralled that from now on, for every happy memory she will ever have of her son during his loathful existence of childhood, they shall all lead back to the very fact that he was rightly KILLED! I'm thoroughly thankful that she will, from now on, associate the very memory of giving birth to the little murderous defect to the very day of his demise. The tears she's weeping are drops of tender, quenching nourishment to my soul.

I'll be going to sleep with a smile on my face knowing that she'll forever be in emotional anguish, that the only way she'll ever see her son again are only in her memories. I hope she drowns in them ever so painfully, as well as in the water should she decide to do the right thing and throw herself off a bridge. I pray that her son's actions legally deny her Medicare coverage when she does get old. I'd actually enjoy seeing her moan in pain to her demise. She should've done the right thing and drown her worthless crotch-shiat at borth, and we'll never know why she didn't.

The only tragic thing about all this is that we don't have any way to politically charge her for anything concerning her worthless son's crimes (yes, political crimes. I believe in those).

baltimoreblonde: what_now: AnthraxRipple: The MAC-10, when fully-automatic, is in fact a machine pistol

Why can't it just be a machine gun?

In general, a machine pistol uses straight blowback/recoil action, and fires pistol ammunition, e.g. .45 ACP or 9-mm parabellum. A machine-gun proper uses gas-operated, mechanical linkage and fires rifle-type ammunition. Submachine-guns, so-called (e.g. Uzi, Sten, M3,, are technically machine pistols, hence the typical German designations for them such as MP-38, MP-40 and the current Cadillac of submachine-guns, the H&K MP-5.
The MAC-10, and its ilk, when fully auto, are machine pistols.

Good thing that MAC-10 jammed after two rounds - a simple, nasty gun, but like the Sten, will kill you when it works.

Besides the obvious 9/11 answer, a lot of police departments invested in rifles than can penetrate soft body armor, after the infamous 1993 North Hollywood bank robbery, with the two guys covered head-to-toe in home-made body armor that could shrug off pistol rounds and buckshot.

Plus, a few rappers have publicized body armor as a fashion statement, which a few gangbangers have imitated. IIRC, 50 Cent wears a vest with a custom Gucci shell.

I think we're both victims of poor reporting here.

FTA:

Newsom, who was not wearing a bulletproof vest, placed his arm over his chest to protect his heart -- a move police officers are taught in the academy -- as he fired four times, hitting Martinez in the chest, collar bone and both arms.

But even the 17-year veteran's bullets didn't stop the thug, who struggled with the officers as he lay bleeding -- but still clutching his weapon.

It would appear that the officer shot while he was being shot at, shortly after, most likely before the other officers were on top of him. It wouldn't make sense that an officer would shoot at an assailant when other officers are in the line of fire.

Exactly.

Or, when you cannot get the quote you want you can always make one up.

Actually the quote was taken from a news crew that showed up because the woman was yelling at the cops, it was unprovoked and shows how out of touch most black parents are.

"My little angels are the best, I just ignore where they get this $1000 a week without a job, Im sure that baby laxative and baking soda he buys by the case is just for his own use, that hot plate is just for warming up food late at night so he doesnt wake me up, and those illegal guns are just for self defense because he would never harm a fly!!!!!"

The fact is her son was basically strong arming people into buying his shiatty CD, if you dont buy it they basically threaten you with violence. It works on most people because they have actual jobs and are out of shape.

Heh ... I could definitely picture that happening too.

Especially considering his brother interfered with the cops after the shoot out. Bunch of scumbags.

I don't know. I was trained to shoot center mass first, and then if they don't stop attacking, to shoot the head. Its a reaction to body armor and or people loaded up with pcp and various other performance enhancing drugs. Since he was still struggling with the cops after he had been shot, it sounds like the cops were as lenient as they could be.

I read it as he returned fire and hit the guy and he went down but wasn't dead at the time. Other officers then came up and took his gun away.

Loren: I read it as he returned fire and hit the guy and he went down but wasn't dead at the time. Other officers then came up and took his gun away.

That sounds right. I'm not sure how the officer could have done something wrong in this case. From what I understand about the law regarding self-defense, once the kid drew a gun, he initiated the use of lethal force and so lethal force was justified in exchange.

From what I've read, as well as from personal experience, a number of things happen physiologically to a person when they are in this sort of situation.
1) tunnel vision
2) auditory exclusion (loss of hearing)
3) Tachypsychia (new window)-- perception of time is slowed.

Under those conditions, shooting someone in the leg is not feasible since, on average, cops miss 75% of the shots they take while under that sort of stress (I'm sure I would too). Keep in mind that the shots being taken by the cops are aimed at center of mass because that is where they are taught to shoot in throughout their training. In the flight/fight mental state, a person will typically respond the way they were trained to respond. There's a book called "The Ayoob Files" by Massad Ayoob if you're interested in learning more about it.

No_One_Special: You don't aim for limbs. You don't "shoot to wound". Guns are deadly weapons, designed to kill. When someone is shooting one, cops are trained to shoot to kill. Anyone who trains with firearms trains to aim for center mass.

OK, once again: cops are not trained to shoot to kill. They are trained to shoot to stop the threat. As previously mentioned, this means center mass, or maybe a failure/mozambique pattern.

The reason cops shoot to center is because they're not very accurate when they're under stress - some asshole with a Mac-10 spraying lead all over Times Square qualifies as a "stressful situation" - and aiming at the center improves the odds of getting a hit without sending a bunch of rounds into bystanders.

The point is NOT "shoot to kill." It's "stop the threat right goddamn now."

On the other hand, I don't think I've ever heard of an accurately placed failure drill that didn't kill the target. Three wound canals, guts all shredded up from the hydraulic shock, and a shot right into the T-box = lights out.

Why didn't they shoot him in the leg, indeed... Because it wouldn't work, you dumb biatch!

The chrome gun in both boardroom scenes was a Desert Eagle.

There's a video on YouTube that's from the bonus section of the DVD. Specifically talks about Robocop's gun. When they dressed Weller up in the suit they found that even the Desert Eagle looked small in his hand. The armorer from Texas took a 9mm(most likely a 93R but I'm not 100% positive. It did shoot 3 round bursts in the movie.) and modified it with a different rear site, extended slide/barrel and fins on the front. Verhoven said he wanted it to look like a coffin.
