(Cinematical) Interesting James Cameron has two sequels planned for Avatar, and on top of that, he wants to remake Fantastic Voyage. Subby's all for highlighting the musical genius that is Coolio, but he doesn't know how that song is going to be made into a movie   (cinematical.com) divider line 104

He might want to make sure that Avatar isn't a half-billion dollar stinkbomb before he proceeds with the sequels.

Pulls out some old Lakeside vinyl, drops the needle and asks whelpmitter to get off his lawn.

Very nice, subby. Very nice.

remaking Ferngully is one thing, but Fantastic Voyage has zero commercial appeal and cannot be improved upon, so there is no reason for a remake.

Shane Salerno (Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem) is writing the script.

That's a recipe for success if I've ever seen one.

I hope his new groundbreaking 3D technology can reaminate the corpse of Donald Pleasance.

MIguy: Saw Avatar the other night and it's just plain jaw dropping. The dialogue is cheesy at times and the story is nothing new but the visuals and 3D are like nothing ever put on screen before.

How do you see it in 3D? Does it have to be at a theatre set up for it, or do you get glasses?

Both. Almost all nowadays have a couple screens set up for 3D though. And then they add on like $4 to your ticket price for the glasses.

i wonder if the people who biatch that there isn't any original content in hollywood are the same ones who want to biatch about how bad an original movie is before they've seen more than 2% of it

Unless Rachel Welch is available for the remake of "Fantastic Voyage", there is no need to go any further.

"So in terms of the pitch it was: OK, you've spent a lot of money on the first one; on the second one we'll be able to amortize it and focus on the story and all that ... and they bought that."

The epic story of the journey from Da Hood to Da Beach. At least, that was the story in the original video.

Translation: It's completely and utterly unoriginal to the point of being insulting. But it was pretty to look at.

They'll probably go with Megghin Fox. Or Skarlett Johanson.

The sequel talk is coming out so there's a way to do direct-to-video specials or a kid's show without making it look like a money grab to even out the books. Cameron's just doing it now so it looks like a plan and not desperation.

Well, apparently Ebert loved it. (new window) Yet, his review makes it obvious how much the movie is full of overwrought environmentalist and anti-colonialist cliches: "The Na'vi survive on this planet by knowing it well, living in harmony with nature, and being wise about the creatures they share with. In this and countless other ways they resemble Native Americans." Yeah, like we haven't seen this trope repeated a million times in a million different movies. Honestly, what the hell is wrong with him?

There's repeating a theme, and then there's REPEATING A THEME IN HUGE NEON LETTERS AND SLAMMING IT INTO YOUR AUDIENCES FACE WITH THE SUBTLETY OF A 10-MEGATON NUCLEAR BLAST, if you get what I mean.

Based only on trailers and commercials, as far as I can see, Cameron has taken every tired old dead cliche available and beaten it into hamburger. The most recent, with the crusty old war sergeant telling his space marines "My job is to keep you alive...I will not succeed with all of you," is so WWII-battle tested I had to check it was "Avatar" and not "Patton."

Between the Good Natives using arrows and spears and riding beautiful flying horse dragons, and the Bad (or at least Equivocal) Marines using power armor and VTOLs and supporting the Evil Industrial Empire, if it was any more black and white, it would be, well, black and white.

So it's a poorly written, re-hashed story with pretty pictures?

No but thanks anyway.

If he had sold it as "Dances With Thundercats" he could have gotten a budget of one billion dollars.

Avatar's trailers made it look like shiat, but even Cameron's worst is usually worth seeing once.

2009-12-12 01:24:25 AM
Avatar's trailers really do look horrible, but so did The Hangover's trailers, and that movie was one of the best I've seen all year. So, I'll wait until a few friends have seen it and go from there.

Honestly though, it looks similar to Princess Mononoke', and that's not a bad thing...but I don't just want to see an imitation of a good movie, I want to see a good movie.

Wow. I think it's safe to say Roger Ebert liked the movie. Pretty unequivocal endorsement. He ain't always right... but he's right most of the time.

Blue Cats, derp. I'm funny.

Just because the story has been told before doesn't mean someone can't tell it better than anyone else has yet.

There are 7 polts, that's it. Either look them up, or I've seen them linked about 3 times in the last 3 days. You can find them. Every goddamn story has told before, it's all down to variations.

Man vs the supernatural.

Fine, I'll post them:

1 - man vs. nature

2 - man vs. man

3 - man vs. the environment

4 - man vs. machines/technology

5 - man vs. the supernatural

6 - man vs. self

7 - man vs. god/religion

There, are you happy now?

That's a theme, not a plot.

Don't wait, if you think you might see it, see it now. If it sucks, you'll know it because you saw it, not because some critic convinced you. If the critics start gushing over how great it is, you won't go into it with high expectations that will be next to impossible to meet. If it's just an ok movie, not bad, but nothing spectacular, you'll still might enjoy it because you had no real expectations going in.

/Probably won't follow my own advice.
