The thing about this show is it is somewhat (very somewhat actually) easy to lose huge amount of weight when that is all you do. Being some place with no distractions and nothing to do but workout and eat healthy is a lot easier than maintaining that in the real world. The vast majority of the people that go through this process end up back where they began (or close to it).

The guy who came in second...you could see the flaps of skin hanging off of him through the side of his shirt and arm hole.

All in all I thought it (the show) would be something that was exploiting these people, however it really isn't. The bad thing is that they attack this as a sole focus and when they get back to real life it is much harder to do what they have to do to remain healthy and not fat.

If you don't go through and commit to the lifestyle change first, you're just going to end up obese again in 12 months. It would be like getting a lung transplant while you're still smoking 2 packs a day.

Plus, it easier for the surgeons, and safer, if they only have to take off a little fat with the skin, instead of a 6 inch layer.

I wonder if they can store the skin in case he gets skin cancer or is burned in a fire.

I didn't see the first hour so maybe they covered this, but last weeks episode had Bob going to visit last years winner who really looked AMAZING, not even the same guy anymore....yah he gained it ALL back.

I wonder what kind of psychological workup they do on the contestants and a risk analysis of what their future will be post TV show.

Jesus Christ, they should just post pictures of that next to super sizing options, fark. I mean even if you lose the weight without tons of reconstructive surgery you're almost going to look worse. Even then you're going to be covered with horrid scars...and to top it all off, you're likely to get fat again.

The skin hanging is pretty nasty, for sure. But my step-aunt lost about 150 pounds and had the skin reduction surgery stuff, and while she looked weird for a little bit (mostly puffiness from surgery), she looks pretty darned good now, especially for having been a land whale just four years ago. I think maybe they must have improved how they do it in recent years.

It probably also helps that she lost her in a slow, healthy fashion (after the initial quick drop of about 30 - 40 pounds).

I stopped watching that show when an hour of crying fat people turned into two. Good for him though, that took committment.

Accelerated weight gain or weight loss is bad for the heart and can have long-term health repercussions. Also, hell on skin elasticity.

/Thankfully, I've never been fat. Been +/- 5 lbs my current weight the last 14 years or so. It's good that some people realize they have problems and do something about it, that's thinking positive and acting on it.

brigid_fitch: I don't know about the gay thing, but a friend of mine who had bariatric surgery said that both her surgeon & psychologist told her that 45% of people who lose that kind of weight leave their spouses. They suddenly become hot and get lots of attention from strangers, so the temptation is too much.

There is actually a deeper reason to that as well. We tend to emulate those people close to us, meaning when your friends get fat you get fat... or rather when they add weight you tend to add weight. It works for family members as well.

When you fail to follow the trend these relationships tend to wane.

Princeton had a really good article on it a few years back.

"Oh my god, did you see 'America's Fattest Fatty' last night? A 300lb woman lost 2 pounds and cried for 20 minutes!"

He's healthier.

All that excess skin still requires miles of blood vessel which still puts him at risk for heart disease... no matter how many miles you run.

Same reason weight lifters, though while technically fit and have a healthy body are at risk for heart disease. Tissue requires blood vessels which requires extra work on your heart.

I reserve my hate only for people who deserve it by being an asshole.

I was glad he won. Seems like a decent guy.

I do understand why the Weeners from a lot of people is "why praise someone for finally being normal after decades of irresponsible behavior?", but the good thing about the show is they don't allow the players to become victims. They try to get them to understand the psychological reasons that they became addicted to Doritos and napping, and gain the strength to move past them.

The show gives them the tools to continue their success, such as a working knowledge of proper nutrition and exercise technique. Many of them will not continue to utilize what they learned and will gain much of the weight back, but most will be at least healthier than they were.

If you watch the show regularly, as I do, you would see that they're not just "fatties", but real people, many of whom are smart and accomplished, but lost control of a healthy lifestyle long ago for various reasons.

I hope this educates the legions of fatties tripping over themselves to get gastric bypass surgery thinking they'll all end up like this guy. It's exercise people, save the money from your GBS and spend it on a licensed trainer.

The oldest woman this season, Liz, had the best legs of all the women. Most of the them still had tree trunks, no matter how thinned out their faces and tones their arms were.

I wonder if all that extra skin could be donated to a burn victim?

Too much damn crying, and too many commercials. I've had a DVR for a while, so I'm able to skip- I feel bad for the people who can't skip all the damn commercials.

A lot of them gain most or all of the weight back but I can't imagine how much better you would feel after losing 239lbs. That's like walking around with a NFL linebacker on your back. You would think that would be motivation enough.

I can kind of see the Paul Newman thing...

Biggest Loser is one of the better commercials to be on TV in a while. Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives is the best, though.
