Cornwell: YAY! Someone besides me submitting this link!

So if it's not a rocket, what is it?

The ones in the original look like they could be shopped until you see Cornwell's 34 images of various quality showing the same thing.

Woah. Send this to the geek tab and see if they can save us.

Further contributions:

Norwegian astronomers and meteorologists baffled and not aware of any astronomic or meteorologic phenomenon that might cause this shiate.

Nearby rocket facilities:
Andøya has no launches planned.
Kiruna has no laucnhes planned.

Russian Northern Fleet Commands denies any ICBM test launches.
Vladimir Isupov, press attaché at the Russian has nothing to report, and isn't aware of any ongoing activity that might have caused this.

2009-12-09 09:30:13 AM
Witnesses from Trøndelag to Finnmark compared the amazing sight to anything from a Russian rocket to a meteor or a shock wave - although no one appears to have mentioned UFOs yet.

If this had happened in Mississippi the National Guard would have started firing on it already.

FredaDeStilleto: So if it's not a rocket, what is it?

Popular theories:
Unnanounced Russian rocket launch
An early sign of the apocalypse
An extraterrestial DUI
CERN collider spontaneously blowing a hole in the space/time continuum.

I have to admit that the Russians tend to be rather good at informing nearby countries and not-so-nearby countries equipped with nuclear weapons when the plan to launch any heavy hardware.

My favourite at the moment is the idea of a small green-grey alien creature franticly gripping the armrests of his seat, going "WWWheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee eeeeeeeeeeeeee!"

'It was like a giant spiral - a shooting star that spun around and around. I initially thought it was a projector', added Axel Rose Berg, from Alta.

For two minutes? Is a flight path trail able to stay that solid for that long?

Please forgive me

Still a little odd that Russian North Fleet Command faltly denies it, if it was in fact a planned sea-launch of a rocket of some sort.

I would assume that there are a few active early warning systems that wouldn't be too amused to detect a heavy payload launch from somewhere in Russian territories, so I would guess that there should have been a memo of some sort...

Quite possibly. This is in the arctic, at an unknown altitude during clear, still weather. Perfect weather for seeing Aurora Borealis in the evenings, although Aurora Borealis usually doesn't quite tend to spin around and explode.

The Russian Northern Fleet is not aware of the launch of the rocket (new window)

Generally, the object was visible for a few minutes, before exploding. The contrail was visible for quite a while.

You can see a yellow squiggle on the horizon in some of the pictures. That's a rocket launch. I'm guessing the spiral effect is a rocket gone haywire. Here's a similar picture (new window) of a rocket launch from Vandenberg AFB without the spiral.

Criminy. Didn't you youngsters ever see that episode of the Brady Bunch, where the boys fooled the girls into thinking that they were seeing a UFO? Was this one accompanied by a whistling sound?

It was Greg, no doubt about it.
