I was thinking the same thing. I mean, if some horrible illness crapped out his liver, then hell yea, why not celebrate a little by tying one on.

But if he needed a transplant because drugs or alcohol ruined his old one, I'd find it amusing it someone sued for the organ back.

greentea1985: I think the only way a drunk gets a liver is if a family member agrees to give up part of their liver. The liver is quite good at regenerating. What a way to ruin such an important gift.

For better or worse, young alcoholics can get a liver transplant fairly easily provided they enroll in treatment/education programs and get sober for a while prior to the transplant.

Still many, many alkies relapse very quickly following the transplant, and given the amount of IS drugs they're on, there's a very high morbidity associated therewith; TFA case in point.

What's always been interesting to me is the number of alkies who die of heart failure; their livers keep ticking all the way through, but their mitral valve is just worthless.

All I know is when I finally win the war against my liver, I will take it like a man and slip slowly into the sweet sweet night.
But I am hedging my bets on Robo-Livers by the time that happens.

It's not an illness or a disease in my opinion but it's an addiction that some people can't control. It's not all fun and games for a hardcore alcoholic. There's a chemical aspect wherein alcoholics have actually died from withdrawals. So be a little judgmental but not too much.

I've known two alcoholics, so I know from first hand experience...

They CAN quit if they want to..something tells me this guy doesn't want help, etc...so he shouldn't get a new liver. He's making a decision, he should live (or die) with it.

not knowing if he abused his first liver, i will give him the benefit of the doubt.

but if he had, i think someone needs to go to la crosse and rip the thing out of him and give it to someone more deserving-

Take the liver back and give it to someone else who is more respectful of it and what goes into that. Let him croak.
