At the fencing club where we used to buy gear in Denver, there was a sign by the phone: "If Neil Diamond or Jimmy Buffett call, please put Elaine on the phone immediately."

A year or two after I first noticed the sign, they replaced it with a new one.

Which prompted me to ask, "Do Neil Diamond and Jimmy Buffett actually call here, or is this just an Elaine fangirl thing?"

"Oh they both call fairly often. They are both fencers, or at least used to be. Now they both sponsor kids from poor families, make sure they have gear, pay for their lessons, cover their travel for tournaments on the road. We have five Diamond kids and eight Buffett kids, ranging from 12 to 19. They do this at clubs all across the country."

So I have to say, as much as some of their music curdles my spine and makes me feel like I need dentistry, I respect what they're doing with the money that fame is bringing them.

I'd go for that dinner even if just to say "good work, well done" on that one topic.

Don't care for Jimmy (except for his Xmas album) but Neil rocks, especially on Cracklin' Rosie. As someone who also was on the fencing team in HS, I salute the Jewish Elvis and say "bless his heart" for the charity work.

I still wouldn't have dinner with him, though. I'd probably be intimidated.

I'm with you. He was pretty prolific as a songwriter - in my mind as far as popular songs of that era go, it was paul anka, neil sedaka, and neil diamond writing all the hits.

Diamond in fact went to college on a fencing scholarship, I believe. Sadly knowing that, I was still halfway through your post and thinking you meant fencing as in chain link. derp...
