People really want SNL to fail for some reason that escapes me. It has established itself as the "pros" for sketch comedy for better or worse. All the McGruber haters should watch the Shia LaBouf ones on hulu.com before they talk shiat about it, too.

They should make a 30 rock movie. Tits out Liz Lemon. Maybe they'd be pointing in the same direction.

I don't think people want SNL to fail. They just want it to be funny. Which, you have to admit, lately it hasn't been aside from a few exceptions.

I thought the idea of a Macgruber movie was a joke.

The usual criticism of a SNL movie is that there wasn't enough "funny" in a 6 minute skit to extend to 90 minutes, yet they choose to make a film out of Macgruber skits that don't even last that long, and the whole point of the skit is that action is CRITICAL RIGHT NOW.

Co-starring Kristen Wiig?

You couldn't PAY me to watch it. I loathe her characters. She's not funny. She's annoying. She's the 21st century Melanie Hutsell.

SNL generates twice as much new content per season as "Mr. Show with Bob and David" did in its entire 4-year run, but has never been anywhere near as funny.

That being said, "Run Ronnie Run" was a horrible movie and it's not fair to assign ALL the blame for it to Troy Miller.

There isn't enough "funny" in a 6 minute skit to fit a 3 minute skit.

Run Ronnie Run was not a horrible movie, however, it was substandard to what we know they are capable of - thus a huge letdown.

She's hit and miss on some of the skits, but I think she's one of the better females they've had in a long time.

The funniest since a bunch of unfunny movies? Wow, great job.

Might have been cool if it was the funniest since Wayne's World or something

Much like I do when these characters appear, week after week, with the same tired catch-phrases and non-funny hooks?

However, I like Kristen herself. She's cute and seems OK as a person. She's also kind of sexy.

So OK, she's not as bad as Hutsell. That *was* low. I just hate her characters, but I'm certain the writers can share some of the blame, there.

She does have a lot of terrible characters.

2009-12-08 06:09:02 PM
Going by that screening review, it sounds god awful.
I think part of SNL's problem is that they're too bound by their own formula. The digital shorts are the best thing they've got going- yeah, they're hit or miss but they're always ten times as interesting as the gazillionth View spoof or Gigli or Jilly or whatever her name is. I like Kristin Wiig but some of her characters do suck, there's no depth.
I wish the Lonely Island guys had their own show. I'd like to see what they could do if they were unleashed.
And all that said, if Bill Hader is reading this; please marry me.

It's Pat is still better solely based on the fact that they had that Ween cameo.

2009-12-08 06:33:05 PM
The direct corporate sponsorship of the sketches has gotten overwhelming and has completely prevented them from doing anything that might be remotely edgy/offensive.

2009-12-08 06:39:56 PM
I thought that Paramount came to its senses a decade ago and put a permanent kai-bosh on the crappiness that is SNL spinoff movies? I mean, I know that Hollywood perpetually greenlights awful crap, but I was pretty sure that this at least we were safe from. Should I keep my guard up for a Wayne's World 're-boot'?

Clan Xpy: It's Pat is still better solely based on the fact that they had that Ween cameo.

The other cool part of "It's Pat", is that afterwards Julia Sweeny had some farking great underground stand-up shows based entirely on being involved in such a shiat production. She's a farking funny chick, and her association with Atheist Alliance is just icing for me. Also, it had Dave Foley, who I could watch read telephone books, and he'd probably get paying gigs doing so if it weren't for doing so many shiat films like "It's Pat".

/her home newspaper's movie review read: "It's Pat, it stinks!"

You have to be kidding me. This is one of the worst SNL skits of all time and they're making a MOVIE? It's not even remotely funny. Hollywood, you are shamed. Good lorbs may as well make a movie of D*ck in a Box. Now that might be funny.

/ not likely, those pinheads down south ( NorCal here )

Instinct says MacGruber will be terrible, but we won't really know until it comes out, eh?

SNL is one of my favorite shows, hands down. If I could take credit for keeping it on the air, I would. I don't miss an episode.

Their current cast is pretty good. Sketches are hit and miss (as they ALWAYS have been). I agree with a below poster that the Digital Shorts have become the thing to look forward to (along with Weekend Update, though I wish Seth would get a co-anchor).

I think Fred Armisen is my favorite cast member. I don't find his Obama particularly funny, though. After him, maybe Bill Hader.

My only pet peeve is that the guest host says the SAME EXACT THING to start off the monologue, every time. "It's great to be hosting Saturday Night Live".. something about how it's always been a dream, etc... Someone should really screw with that sometime.

I also watch to see if the guest thanks the cast at the end. Sometimes they don't, and I wonder if that is something that registers with them or if they really don't care.

Macgruber was one of the worst SNL sketches ever.

2009-12-08 07:38:27 PM
Doesn't the whole structure of a typical mcgrubber sketch usually consist of of a 30 second time-sensitive situation? They are going to put in 180 of those in a movie? Kill me now.

2009-12-08 07:38:50 PM
How the fark do you make a MacGruber movie? I mean, the whole sketch is based around being somewhere that is about to explode. It's not the worst sketch ever (far from the best), but it seems the whole premise is by-definition shortlived.

I mean, Wayne's World didn't seem like it would make a good movie, but at least it was a clear extension, showing the hosts when they aren't doing the show, made sense. The characters didn't rely on the "local access show" setting for the humor, they were themselves funny. And it turns out it made a great movie.

2009-12-08 07:54:01 PM
The guys from Lonely Planet are involved with the making of this movie and their digital shorts have been some of the best pieces to come out of SNL in awhile. I don't think any of the principles involved with this project are idiots - they know what crappy movies have been made from the SNL skits in the past. They also must know that MacGruber (and I'm not a big fan of this sketch) is built around the flimsiest premise yet. If nothing else, it wouldn't take much for it to defy expectations.

2009-12-08 07:54:29 PM
Clan Xpy: Ween

Totally. I saw Gener Band earlier this year and they had a tube. Sadly it was Dave playing and not Pat.

2009-12-08 08:06:42 PM
I think they could make a movie out of the recent sketch "Whats Up with That". Have the show itself done like the sketch and then go all Larry Sanders Show on the behind the scenes pitch black humour while introducing the bizarre friends of Diandre Cole who keep showing up in the middle of his songs, hell you could make it a comedy and still wring some drama out of it if they tried.

2009-12-08 08:32:20 PM
I have to admit that I love the Macgruber segments on SNL. However, I am not going to see this movie, at least not until rental. I don't see how it can be done as a full length film. Half the joke is that the place explodes within the minute anyways, when someone or something is interupted. I'd rather see a "theatre-exclusive" Macgruber promo before an actual movie played.

I watched that one today. His face just before they cut to the explosion (all three times) is priceless.

Admittedly there's only about 10-15 minutes of laughs per episode now (if you're lucky), but it's still better than 90% of the crap on TV. It's sad because I really like a lot of the cast members...but the writing is weak and they need to stop doing the same skits over and over.
