DC is undergoing one huge death spiral with its heroes before getting a continuity enema with the Earth One titles next year.

/Nekron "resurrects" Bruce Wayne as a Black Lantern to instill Fear in Superman, Wonder Woman, and the rest of them
//and then the rings turn them into undead Black Lanterns

I wish I was more familiar with the DC Multiverse. I never read DC as a kid and have tried as I have got older. I enjoy the stuff but always feel like I am missing something important.

No...not really. That's why I tend to stray away from the monthlies and wait for the TPBs. DC's fast-tracking the Green Lantern titles now, and they do the same with the majority of their good Vertigo imprints. Jack of Fables, Fables, DMZ, and House of Mystery, for example. Hell, the new Ian Rankin Hellblazer graphic novel is awesome.
It's a tremendous investment to follow the core Blackest Night title and all the spinoffs.
Like I said in yesterday's Marvel Misogyny thread, the only thing the companies are waging war on is your wallet.

But whatever you do...don't read Final Crisis. It will mess with your head and it tosses in everything from The New Gods to Batman to...I'm just going to stop. It's all too much a headache.

I am buying my girl the Y series. She has never read comics but is blazing through them. I got her Vol II on Friday and had to go out for Vol III on Sunday. She is really enjoying it so I am looking forward to getting my hands on it once she is all done.

I actually got that last Christmas.
Never mind I have all the single volumes, the big one's nice.
As is "The Art of Bone."
If you want a quick, quirky read that doesn't require too much knowledge of mythos, pick up Neil Gaiman's "Whatever Happened to the Cape Crusader?" It's how his Rogue's Gallery deals with his "death."
In some ways, it's an homage to "Almost Got Him."

Also, I really enjoyed Brian K. Vaughn's "Pride of Baghdad."

One of the things I like about the DC characters is that they're simple. There isn't a million pages of back story for each guy that explains every facet of his being.

Now it's not just because I'm a simpleton, what's great about the DC characters is that their simplicity allows them to be used in various ways. Things like Red Son or The Nail in particular. As one guy said, Black Lantern Batman sounds awesome. Who would be more dangerous than Batman with a ring? Though it's predictable that Batman would turn hero because he's the Goddamn Batman.

I must be getting old because I remember Marvel and DC would cancel long-running series and restart them just so they could have a new #1 "collectible" issue.

Deagan Herumor: One of the things I like about the DC characters is that they're simple. There isn't a million pages of back story for each guy that explains every facet of his being.

Simple?

In which of the 52 universes?

Superman, who was killed, resurrected, went nuts and tried to be everywhere at once and created androids to help him do so, and was and was not Superboy who was and was not a member of the Legion of Superheroes?

Batman, who had his back broken, magically healed, had Gotham City hit by an earthquake and a plague before it was cut off from the rest of the country until soon to be President Lex Luthor gave the money to rebuild, then Batman gave up his Bruce Wayne identity after Bruce was framed for Murder, but everything turned out okay and Bruce was cleared just before Bats took over the Gotham police and became an outlaw again, and during that time, his dead second Robin, Jason Todd, was resurrected because Superboy (not the one Superman may or may not have been, but another one) punched the universal wall and made things un-happen, so now Jason is running around as the Red Hood while Bruce Wayne has been transported back to 50 million years ago and everyone thinks he's dead and Dick Grayson and Bruce's illigitmate son Damien are Batman and Robin?

That's simple, eh?

You're welcome. Alan Moore's "Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow" was good too; it is a different take on what happens after Superman leaves Earth. It was before he went all loony toons. His DC Collected Stories is great, if only for "The Man Who Has Everything."

Got the first two Walking Dead hardcovers for my birthday. It's a fairly good yarn, but I know it's...uncompromising.
52 was great solely for the Booster Gold/Rip Hunter storyline. I have the Booster Gold figure that DC Direct released, and skeets pops open to reveal Mr. Mind.

Dog Welder: I must be getting old because I remember Marvel and DC would cancel long-running series and restart them just so they could have a new #1 "collectible" issue.

I assume they are finally undoing that with this Wonder Woman change.

Good. One of the things that got me into comics was seeing something like "The Amazing Spider-man number #225" or "The Mighty Thor 595" for example. Knowing there were years of continuity going let me know it was a real hero, not some flash in the pan like Nth Man, the Ultimate Ninja.

Also, I cannot keep track of X-men between all the crossovers, and restarts to the series. Which low numbered X-men comic was I reading? Don't recall but let me pick up X-men 256. Back before the internet I loved seeing little corner boxes that said things like "way back in ish 35. -Smilin Stan Lee"

The English Major: DC is undergoing one huge death spiral with its heroes before getting a continuity enema with the Earth One titles next year.

I think the Earth One graphic novels were going to be a new and different continuity like Marvel's Ultimate line, not a new continuity in the regular titles occurring on New Earth. So it's not really an enema; they're actually packing more shiat into the Multiverse, to use your metaphor.

The English Major: But whatever you do...don't read Final Crisis. It will mess with your head and it tosses in everything from The New Gods to Batman to...I'm just going to stop. It's all too much a headache.

Yes. Yes He is.

proletarian: Final Crisis was outstanding.

No, It was not. And it was 99% pointless other than have Batman suicide by God so I can now have Dick Grayson in the bat cape, which sucks, Tim Drake off being even more miserable, which sucks, Jason Todd more insane, which sucks, and Steph Brown as Batgirl. Which also sucks. And Damien Wayne. You get the idea.

I hate you, Grant Morrison. I want to be able to read Bat comics again. Oh the bright side, watching Black Hand drool on Bruce's skull is vastly entertaining.
