If you like Scrabble I highly recommend Quiddler, especially if you've got more than a few players.

Also, I don't think I've ever finished a game of Monopoly in my life.

dragonchild: eddyatwork: If it isn't in the rulebook it doesn't get done.

Unlike actual U.S. economics, where you could just lobby to have the game deregulated. Considering Monopoly is about real estate, imagine what credit default swaps and collateralized debt obligations would do to the game.

You could probably write some rules to allow for that. Allow people to purchase property for less than face value for a certain percentage of the total (or none at all), and have them repay with interest calculated on the number of turns since they purchased the property. They must make some kind of payment every turn, and it may or may not be required that they include a certain amount of principal on the note. Also, allow the banker to sell this newly created mortgage to other players for current value, all while allowing other players to take out "insurance" on the mortgages from the bank- if the player can't keep up the mortgage, the bank must pay off the policy.

If the bank gets busted, you have to make some bailout TARP money with notebook paper.

So Farkers, keep that in mind when you have a bunch of vowels left at the end of the game.

for the scrabble players. what are your house rules?

here are mine for competitive play with people at the same level.

1. you can pick up a previously played blank if you have the corresponding letter among your 7, which you put in the blank's place. you must play the blank that same turn. (this keeps the blanks in play all game)

2. you can look up 1 word per turn (keeps your vocab improving)

I'll admit that I've never closely studied the rulebook, but that is a ridiculous house rule. Our misinterpretations and house rules were designed to fark each other over in more extravagant ways, not reduce the pain.

I am saddened by the lack of any non-Ameriatrash games on this thread.

Railroad Tycoon, Steam, Agricola, La Havre, Power Grid, Puerto Rico... There are hundreds of games out there that don't rely on the randomness of dice to dictate the game. They're fun and use a lot of serious strategy in them.

And yet, almost no one in the US has ever heard of Settlers of Catan, one of the most popular board games in the world.

I like to play the game with goverment rules.
A)Whoever is the banker can use all the money in the bank as tarp funds.
B) Each player must pay the bank 20 each turn in HOA fees.
C)If you forclose on a property then you must pay back 50 percent (rather then the normal 10 percent) more to cover the cost of the forclosure, bank fees, taxes, and HOA fees that have gathered over time.
D)Failure to pay fees or rent money properly will result in lawsuits in which the the payee will have to pay twice which is owed along with 2000 dollars (legal fees).

If you have any other rules you think should be added feel free to add them. We tend to change the rules willynilly (Just like congress;)

I usually am able to trick my friends in to playing against me once or twice a year, and then they remember why they don't play that game with me.

Scrabble is the same way. My stepmom got really mad at me one year for using a two-letter word she swore I was making up. I had to bust out a big dictionary to show it to her. She still refuses to play that game with me, and that happened over 5 years ago.

Renart: Carcassonne, Settlers of Catan, Chess, Go, Scrabble, and Cranium are all far superior to Monopoly. However, I do love Monopoly's playing pieces.

I love Carcassonne, though some of the expansions or sequels made it a little tedious. I'm really not a big fan of Cranium. I enjoy the other games that you mentioned.

Z Germans passed us long ago in the board game department. Settlers, Seafarers, and Knights and Cities of Catan, Puerto Rico, Ticket to Ride, Roller coaster Tycoon, Entdecker, etc.

How many different versions of Monopoly must be put out before America decides to put some thought into their games? Star Wars Monopoly? NFL Monopoly? Hannah Montana Monopoly? I will be happy when we start making better board games at the same rate that we build new video games.

/tucks the soapbox away again....
