Definitely greenlit. Definitely.

Sweet we're moving towards a society where we'll no longer value "whole people" and prefer those who are in someway handi-capped and dependent on others. Just like an ant colony.

somehow i'm not sure if corporate exploitation of a disorder is a good thing ... but at least it is better than thee kids being unemployable

If they would just make vaccines safer we wouldn't even be talking about autism anymore.

I'm going to bookmark this for my daughter to read when she gets home. She's unsure as to what she wants to do with her life, and this may give her some ideas.

Kind of like how a complete lack of shame and self-consciousness are great traits if you want to be a circus or rodeo clown?

In this case the guy is working as a computer programmer. As long as the company is paying him industry standard wages it sounds like a win-win, not exploitation. If anything it's more of him exploiting his particular aptitude to increase his personal income.

I don't know about that, subby. Too many greenlights are full of spelling and grammatical errors that I have a hard time believing they were written by autistics. I imagine autistics/aspies being real sticklers for that kind of thing.

/unless they're masters of flamebaiting in their headlines... I could see that.

Exactly. While I think there is a radical element to the Neurodiversity movement, in general they are right. Large parts of the Autism spectrum are just normal neurological variation within the human population, and thats a good thing. The autistics typically classified as "high functioning" simply work differently than the rest of the population and thats fine, it gives them certain aptitudes as well as drawbacks in todays society.

Of course there are the extreme cases, which is a severe handicap, but that isn't the bulk of people diagnosed as falling somewhere on the Autism Spectrum. It isn't exploitation to foster an environment where companies realize that while many of these people may have social handicaps they also have incredible strengths that will make them very very good at certain types of jobs. Its a good thing to recognize that.

2009-12-08 10:54:35 AM
Fark that shiat. I would rather be socially normal and stupid/unskilled.

Life is social and existing outside of that sucks.

It makes sense really, any job that is repetitive, or requires a bit of logical organization, or simply lacks unpredictable social interactions is going to give people with Asperger's Syndrome a bit of an advantage.

Obviously someone who's way down on the Autistic spectrum is going to have other issues that make working almost any job impossible, but if you're just dealing with Asperger's Syndrome there can be noticeable advantages.

/Has Asperger's Syndrome
