So why don't they give a H1N1 shot in the bum.

/That was a pathetic joke... I''m really sorry about that.

Isn't it going to come back in February and be 10x as bad, or is that all bs too?

Maybe everyone taking the recommended precautions and taking it seriously and getting vaccinated reduced its effect?

/Nah, couldn't be

I think well over three quarters of us predicted this outcome.

They just don't make the apocalypse like they used to.

With the local farmland being gobbled up at a ridiculous rate, and the clogged highways, I hoped that this flu would have thinned the herd a bit.

Oh, well....

Or maybe the media and the government blew the whole thing out of proportion. That couldn't be it either.

Don't worry, there's plenty of other strains of flu that can mutate and reduce us to a post-apocalyptic civilization of tribalism. And we have the media to thank for being our early warning signal.

Also, if I'm still alive when humanity is decimated by the next disease scare? Can I get some people to join my tribe? I bet we could make a kick-ass fortress out of an abandoned IHOP.

I, for one, am stunned that the media's wide-eyed, piss-panting terror winds up having little or no relation to reality. You'd almost think they purposely exaggerate to drive an increased read/viewership.

The media had to quickly underplay the severity of the Swine Flu after the government failed to deliver the vaccines in a timely fashion

2009-12-08 09:29:30 AM
We're all suckers. The problem wasn't H1N1 - it's the vaccine! They overplay the danger so many of us get vaccines. A couple years down the road we find out the vaccine causes cancer and we're all screwed because we listened to the government. They wanted an easy way to get rid of many of us, so they instill fear and have us walk right into the oven.

WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE!

You obviously don't watch much news do you?

2009-12-08 09:32:01 AM
Well, that certainly sold a LOT of vaccine.

Good news is most of the production run was sold at 2-3 times contracted price to divert delivery at last minute.
What did the bankers pay for it? How 'bout all those "royal families"?

Who says profit is bad? We certainly do not need regulation or control of BIgBadMedicine.

How is that "free enterprise/open market" thing working with corrupt and immoral enterprisors?

Considering the low overall vaccination rate in the US at this point the answer is definitely no.

Science is becoming as corrupt as religion anymore (at least when it comes to stuff that gets into the MSM, such as H1N1 and climate change), can't trust anybody anymore it seems.

If some disease is going to kill a large part of the population, we're not going to see it until it's too late and people are already dropping like flies in the streets. We knew what swine flu was, we got it under the microscope, we studied it and could fight it. What we need is an unknown disease that causes uncontrollable bleeding with the subject dying 5 mins later with everybody in 20 feet getting it as well including those in haz-mat suits.

According to the article, the rate of deaths per 1000 infections is around the same as for seasonal flu. It's just that this one is killing kids instead of old folks. Typical seasonal flu kills old people almost exclusively. Like 90%. The distribution graph looks like a diving board. The fatality distribution graph of H1N1 looks like a Greek urn.

I just got my shot because we've got people coming from out of town over Christmas and I don't want to dump all the work on my wife. And we've got a vacation planned (and paid for) for mid-winter.

There you go. Do your own epidemiological studies. Create your won vaccines. You show 'em. They are gonna look sooo foolish!

Media hype causes a panic? Say it ain't so!

2009-12-08 09:55:25 AM
Unless you're a kid, then not so much. I read a similar article else where, MSNBC I thing, but if it had effected old people the death rate would be hell of a lot higher because as with most flu's it's almost never the flu that kills you but something else opportunistic like pneumonia, and heart problems that plague old people.

When the swine flu vaccine was most scarce, health officials gave thousands of doses to corporate clinics at Walt Disney World, Toyota, defense contractors, oil companies and cruise lines, according to a USA TODAY review of vaccine distribution data from three states.

pippi longstocking: kills less people

Fewer people. Especially if you use bold type.

/Things which can be counted using integers, (discrete items, that is) use the word fewer to indicate a lesser number. Things which require the use of the real numbers to enumerate use the word less to indicate a smaller quantity.
