I'm sure if no one claims it the police will give the $380 to the employees.

If I ever found that much money, I'd keep my mouth shut and quietly spend the cash on small purchases without blinking an eye. No way in hell would I tell my coworkers.

I'm surprised it stayed there for 4 days without someone screaming "suspicious package!!!!" and calling out the bomb squad to blow it up.

Article fails for not mentioning what the red can looked like. When I read the headline, I assumed it was one of those cans you see for local people who have cancer or something.

I worked in transaction processing for a large bank. (checks only) One saturday, some idiot teller sent the cash vault deposit to us instead. I was all by myself when I opened the bag and found $30,000 dollars inside. I made sure to do the whole vegas empty hand gesture for the cameras as I left it there on the table until someone else got there.

they got a $10,000 surprise.

The can contained $10,380 in assorted bills.

Well, which was it? $10,000 or $10,380?? Great reporting, idiot.

The sad part is - whoever ACTUALLY found it will probably never see a dime, between highly corruptible police, and whatever pencil dick manager working the Kmart.

Not having a job, the holidays has put my back against the wall $$$ wise, screw "honesty" in a situation like this, if you are dumb enough to just set 10K in a can and walk off than maybe you shouldn't have that much money in the first place. Finders keepers.

I think it was Eisenhower, maybe Roosevelt who said "a fool and his red can are soon parted." - maybe Michael Crichton.

Not visible within the can was the exotic strain of the Ebola virus that has likely been infecting customers for days.

Seriously, why was no one freaking out about an abandoned can in a Wal-Mart? Because it's a lie?

Whats the big deal? They have security cameras, they can just watch them and see who left the can there. Something seems a bit odd about the whole thing.

A "can" lot-of-fun sounds pretty good to me.

...what security cams watch that area? Next time you go to that store take a look around. There is nothing out there monitoring that area of the store.

So, after 30 days, will the cops give the 5000 back to the store so the manager can give the 2000 to whoever found the can?

Looks like one Kmart might make its numbers this month.

When I was busing tables at a Bonanza many moons ago, at closing I found a wallet waaaay overloaded with big bills. Looked almost like a person had just been in one of those boxes where they blow cash around and you grab it, it was so crammed.

Dude came banging on the door (which was locked) and glaring at me. I didn't even attempt to count it, just picked it up and was heading to the manager.
Not even a grunt to pretend to say thank you.

What, no grammar nazis? I assumed I'd be too late to point out that "there was $10,380" sounds stupid.

I'm surprised the local anti-terrorism outfit didn't confiscate the money for compensation.

My bet is a compulsive shoplifter with a guilty conscience. The fact that the can sat there for four days can speak to the reason someone was able to shoplift $10K+ from the store in the first place.

$380 in a can isn't a surprise. I bet they find cans like that all the time.

No, your time at Fark is no longer required. In short, you've been canned.

Do you agree that the customer probably didn't carry the red can into the store shoved into their brown hole? If you know how long it's been in the store, hopefully there are still tapes of someone walking into the store with it. Perhaps 10k can fit into a much smaller can than I'd imagine, and it's possible that someone deliberately concealed the can entering, but I'd think it was still pretty likely someone just walked in, set it down, and walked back out.

10k really does not take up all that much space assuming large bills

BesiktasBoy83:

Stupid question, and sorta Thread Jack, have you read the entire Aubrey/Maturin series? I don't know anyone other than my late father and myself who has.

--On topic--

Also, assuming there were no cameras I would seriously consider taking borrowing the can and waiting awhile to see if anything was reported on the news as missing. If it was an 85yo WWII vet who doesn't believe in banks I'd totally return it. If it was Jerome's crack profits I doubt it...

I'd put that can on a Kmart counter. If ya know what I mean.

I'm surprised that something set on a counter for 4 days and nothing is done about it... but then i remembered it was a KMart and wondered why it didn't sit there longer before anything was done..
