In related news: Homeless shelters now serving twice the mystery meat.

Nutria??

I've never heard of them..
so I did a search
ugly little beaver-looking things with rat tails.

their meat is supposed to be very good for you, high protein, low fat/cholesterol.. and at less than $1/lb, it's cheap too. the furs are supposed to be nice, too - The state probably wouldn't have to pay the $4/tail if organizations like peta didn't kill the fur industry.

How do they taste? Like rabbit.. (which I suppose tastes like chicken, but i don't know)

I'd like to see one. my wife would probably freak though..

I saw these things on comedy central. Some guys will go out in trucks each night with big searchlights on then and drive up near a sewer, wait, then turn on the lights and start blasting.

My brother lives in Metairie(suburb of NOLA sorta) and shoots these in the canal behind his house all the time with a .22. Supposedly a lot of fun after a few beers.

Fark was overrun with nutria once...
does anyone else remeber this?

2003-03-28 05:16:34 PM
I always wondered what a million dollars worth of dead rats would look like...

2003-03-28 05:16:37 PM
Yeah, this is what I call "the hippie dilemma"

Killing a poor defenseless animal is saving the environment.

HAHAHAHAHA

Anybody else see the "Insomniac" episode where Dave Attell went nutria hunting with the local police? Looked like fun.

They are huge, too!

2003-03-28 05:17:29 PM

NutriaSweet ? Ratsugar ?

Um, I'll just have a glass of water, thanks.

Macman37: Yeah that's where I saw it! I don't like killing things, so it didn't look like fun for me. But I can see how others would enjoy it. And since the population is so huge it's actually a hazard the bounty was probably a good idea. I just feel bad for all the poor people who couldn't afford guns and had to wrestle them down with their barehands. *sniff*.

Did you ever see that episode of Insomniac where Dave Attell goes out with the local federales (or parks service guys or whatever)? They have a seat installed in the back of a pickup truck and one guy drives, one guy shines a spotlight on the riverbank, and one guy nails Nutria with his .22 rifle. It was frigging awesome. Occasionally you'd see a Nutria look up at the spotlight like "what the hell?" and then POW the Nutria is spun head-over-feet. Good stuff.

Skinner: Well, I was wrong. The nutria are a godsend.
Lisa: But isn't that a bit short-sighted? What happens when we're overrun by nutria?
Skinner: No problem. We simply release wave after wave of Chinese needle snakes. They'll wipe out the nutria.
Lisa: But aren't the snakes even worse?
Skinner: Yes, but we're prepared for that. We've lined up a fabulous type of gorilla that thrives on snake meat.
Lisa: But then we're stuck with gorillas!
Skinner: No, that's the beautiful part. When wintertime rolls around, the gorillas simply freeze to death.

Remember that Daily Show special that talked about them? You know, where the reporter ends with "All of God's creatures could use a little more fvcking" and a girl slaps him? How about that Insomniac with Dave Attel, in New Oreleans? No? You guys don't watch Comedy Central except for the Walken SNL's, do you?

Dave Attell was riding with Sheriff Harry Lee of Jefferson Parish. JPSO deputies are allowed to shoot nutria on sight. They are disgusting, and are wreaking havoc on the local ecosystem. They originated in South America, and someone brought them here for some reason I forget, and it has been an unmitigated disaster.

By the way, that was a hilarious episode of Insmniac.

Soon to become an increasingly deep money pit, due to rodent reproductive rates. 280,000 bountied. How many still out there to replace them?

SpinnWebe on nutria. Amusing stuff.

Yeah, those posts above talking about Insomniac and Comedy Central....they don't watch it at all.

2003-03-28 05:27:39 PM
Nabb1

It wasn't on purpose. It's just that Apu bought some donuts from Boliva. The nutria were hiding in the box.

2003-03-28 05:30:23 PM
ROUSes?

2003-03-28 05:31:56 PM
Did anybody see that one post about that episode of Insomniac with Dave Attell?

...apparently not

2003-03-28 05:37:23 PM
I saw a show where Dave Attell was being hunted by this giant rat. It was hi-farking-larious.

2003-03-28 05:38:23 PM
EMP You stole my line! Grrr..

Actually I was just gonna echo Jeho's ROUS.. ^_^

How can anyone harm these gentle majestic crestures??
Stop the nutria slaughter!!!!

Or, use all parts of the nutria.

If they replace us in the food chain, the women would have their tits on their backs.

Knew someone who had a pet nutria named "Zoey" once. Cute. Very tame.

2003-03-28 05:56:09 PM
Nutria chili. Now that's good eatin'.

2003-03-28 05:59:56 PM
its worse than I thought:

2003-03-28 06:00:48 PM
I've eaten 'em. Looks like rabbit, but tastes much sweeter. They eat water lilies; in fact, that's why they brought them here.

If you can get some, try it. Unless you can't deal with the eewww factor.

2003-03-28 06:15:23 PM
damn.. they're really cute.

2003-03-28 06:24:56 PM
Rudezombie

damn.. they're really cute.

That makes them EXTRA tasty.

However... Al & Tipper Gore are still believed to be at large, last seen neckin' under Breaux Bridge... Rats, BEWARE !

2003-03-28 06:43:42 PM
I really wish idiots would stop calling them "rats"

2003-03-28 06:45:02 PM
Just wait until one of those little badboys smiles at you. Big ole yellow buckteeth about 2 or 3 inches long. It ain't pretty.

I killed a few on a golf course that I live near. When I was younger, we'd sneak out there at night and shoot them in the head with a Benjamin Pump pellet gun. Have to hit them in the head though to kill the lil buggers.

Yeah, they'll fark up a golf course.

2003-03-28 06:51:38 PM
Oh, so that's where they got that big rat that they used in Willard.

I understand so much more now.

/thanks hollywood, for making my life worth living.

2003-03-28 06:58:30 PM
We have a horrible nutria problem. The Jefferson parish Sheriff's Office actually sends deputies around to hunt them. I'm glad to see the State is doing more to help out. I mean, there are so many hunters, it only makes sense to try to encourage them to kill those little suckers.

2003-03-28 07:02:30 PM
If I lived in the south, I think I would try hunting these things for the bounties. I don't really enjoy hunting much, but at $4 a head I think I could supplement my income pretty well.

Boudreaux D. Nutria and his wife Clotile, mascots of the New Orleans Zephyrs minor league team:

2003-03-28 07:12:02 PM
Next we'll hear about an infestation of tailess nutrias in n'orleans.

2003-03-28 07:15:17 PM
Jesus, I'm old. I didn't recognize the name "nutria" because when I learned about them as a child they were call "coypu". And 'goose is right, they're no more "rats" than squirrels are 'tree rats'.

. . . tree rats? Auuuuughhhhhhh!
(*runs away*)

2003-03-28 07:27:47 PM
Dat's Boudreaux! I'm not gonna shoot that nutria.

s/Sheriff Lee

2003-03-28 07:43:47 PM
So why aren't the 'gators cleaning these buggers out of the swamp? Do they just breed too damn' fast? Are we looking at an alligator population explosion to follow?

Not that that would be a bad thing.

I'm debating whether I could use this as my excuse to move to New Orleans.

"So what'cha gonna do down there, son?"

"Shoot rats for food and profit."

Hmmm...

2003-03-28 08:06:55 PM
"Nutrias? They don't exist. Argh!"

2003-03-28 08:21:46 PM
MaskimXuul

Gators? How about needle snakes? Then monkeys who like snake meat?

Where does it all end?
