he often associated the female head with a vagina

Anyone who seriously references Freud needs a swift kick in the nuts. "Hmmm, you keep referencing your red Swingline stapler, and yet I really believe you are talking about your penis. You fear your boss cutting your penis off, and also your boss is having sex with your mother."

The only thing Marvel is waging a "secret war" on is your wallet.

2009-12-07 12:31:17 PM
Not knowing anything about comics, I'm going to assume that the referenced "Civil War" and "Secret Invasion" comprise the entire Marvel Comics oeuvre, because otherwise the article really makes no sense.

No ... That's the evangelical right.

Simple answer: No.

But women don't come out of these stories in good shape but not nearly as bad shape as family members and sidekicks usually do.

Wow. With absolutely no evidence she just assumes that Namor keeps his ex-wife's dead body to have sex with it.

Classy assumption there. Right on par with the level of scholarship.

haha wut?!?

so forget the whole government encroachment into personal affairs and forget the government subjugating a group of American based on how they were born. Damn civil war series got me back into comic books

Well, the way that they treated Mary Jane was sucky, I will grant that, but strangely that example doesn't appear in the article.

Huh. You know, I thought I hated one of my COs because he was incompetent, doing shady shiat with the Supply records, a pedantic martinet, faked his own marksmanship scores because he couldn't shiat for shiat, and was probably going to get us all killed.

Turns out I'm racist against Italian-Americans. Man, that sucks. I always thought I was a pretty open-minded guy.

Not to be pedantic, but shouldn't the headline read "Is Marvel Comics waging a secret war on women?"

/also, Secret Wars, that series would make a fun movie.

HHmmm, if you're talking about the Marvel company as a whole, 'is' is appropriate.

If you're talking about story lines in a variety of different comics, 'are' is appropriate.

I have no idea what subby had in mind and know nothing about Marvel comics in general. The 'get me coffee' thing sounds sexist, but I have zero context in which to place the demand.

The Queen as Medusa thing was ridiculous and unnecessary. The Greeks used women all the time as an outright hazard for men (sirens, Circe, Helen of Troy, etc). Medusa probably did have some women-haters flavor, but the Greeks didn't have to hide a sexist motive behind a head of snakes.

This just in: comic book companies have a wide variety of writers. Most of them are male. Some of them may be sexist. This is not indicative of any specific anti-woman policy throughout the company.

Remember that the original "women in refrigerators" thing was _not_ about sexism. It was about providing a product to women. Gail Simone wasn't complaining that comic books hated women - she was complaining that women felt left out - that female characters were too often being used as a sacrificial lamb when a tragedy was needed, which alienated female fans.

The Circe story is far more psychological than Medusa, IMO.

Civil war started because Maria Hill was a woman? Is this some kind of bizarre feminist's view?

I think this chick should read "In Search of the Lost Feminine". Big eye opener, and then maybe she wouldn't be so whiny.

"Comics" was capitalized, so I assumed the company name was intended, hence the pedantry.

As for 'get me coffee', it could have been written that way to further illustrate that Stark is an asshole.

I can't think of a single reason Stark would not tell a woman he defeated to get him his coffee. He's an alcoholic womanizer with severe emotional damage.

It's OK, women are having their revenge by refusing to make any female role interesting (or more than eye candy, really) in all the movie adaptations.

Specific, no. Just a time-honored unspoken tradition. But honestly, comics usually range from pulp to pulp. We're not talking about a slice of society that's in dire need of cleaning up. Or rather, while I admit it could use plenty of improvement, bullying the writers is a cure worse than the problem. A supply-side solution would be asinine.

Honestly, superhero tales are a limited market for girls. Female superheroes like Wonder Woman do have small cult followings among women, but does that translate into actual sales? Even if it does, it's miniscule compared to the market cornered by shojo manga. Women have a fundamentally different idea of "guilty pleasure" fiction than guys, but I'm not gonna dictate terms of, say, male character designs in shojo manga when I'm not in the least bit interested in reading the stuff anyway.

I'm confused. Was TFA about how one retarded fema-nazi is too stupid (which may simply be a symptom of being a fema-nazi) to actually pick one thing wrong with the world and stick with it ie

OR was the article about one Fema-nazi chick (they hate it when you call the chicks)trying valiantly to demonstrate that not all verbally incontinent boneheaded media whores are men?

My ex-gf finds these delusinal idiot femanist chicks hilariously stupid bordering on monty python stupid and she's like the posterchild for femanism. Shes inteligent, professional, attractive, financially independant, owns properties, and doesnt need a man for anything but sex and heavy lifting. If she were a lesbian the femanists would have her bronzed and worship her as a deity. If potential deities mock you -you must be wrong.

Let's see, most people who read comics are adolescent males. At that point in time, most are becoming well-aware of the soft power girls have over boys. In light of this, isn't it just playing to the market to have stories about females upsetting the power balance as once understood? That's the kind of story that will resonate with your audience. No, it's not about sexism, it's about young men coming to terms with how the world works, and allowing them a harmless escape as they reconcile that information.
