There needs to be rule similar to rule 34, only for conservatives.

Rule 34: If it exists, there is porn of it.
Rule 35: If it exists, there is a conservative who is scared of it and thinks it will either destroy them or their way of life.

El Chode: enforcerpsu: If we are forced into retrofits, it could mean 1000s of more layoffs. I'm being completely serious.

Very rarely are retrofits mandated, at least initially. The coal and oil lobby got it in the CAA that only new construction had to meet the standards.

If they actually regulate to the point in the article, then yes, it will. It will be a MESS trying to pass from state to state. You do know that we are already regulated by the EPA right? This is just going to be some absurd level the locomotives can't actually meet. We've been told this for years and we've been telling them...YOU CAN'T DO THAT WITH A LOCOMOTIVE.

Obama said the Stimulus would prevent double-digit unemployment and revive our economy. Everyone on the right said it would make things worse. Who's prediction turned out to be correct? Yeah, the US Chamber of commerce is biased. Yeah, just cause they say something, it doesn't mean it is true. Our prediction is this will really hurt our economy at a time when it is already very fragile. Will our prediction come true? I hope not. But if it does, if the economy gets any worse, how do you think the Dems will fare in 2010? 2012? I want you guys to go all in on this. Because when it blows up in your face, i want no doubts left behind that you guys went all in on this.

Right, but the retrofits aren't a foregone conclusion, and SMBs account for very little shipping (period) in the US, relatively speaking.

this kind of idiot fearmongering is just as bad as the "Global warming is going to kill us all" fearmongering.

"Global Warming will harm the global economic and displace millions, and possible cause several famines", while scary, is much more accurate than "it will kill us all"

the US economy can survive a switch to cleaner technology... to claim it can't is simply moronic.

thomps: enforcerpsu: You fail to understand the point. The units are at the breaking point of efficiency and clean "air" they produce. 12 cylinders now instead of 16. However, there still has to be power to move and until we can "store" that power in battery tech that actually works in a freakin locomotive, its not happening.

I'm not saying trucking is better. Locomotives have obvious advantages, but you can't squeeze blood out of a rock. This will stifle locomotive production...grossly. This will cost BILLIONS of dollars in retrofits.

Guess who pays that? YOU.

right, and you're missing my point: if you're already at such an advanced level of efficiency, then you shouldn't expect to be hit with massive new regulations, whereas other, less efficient industries certainly will.

Nope, I fully expect that by February of next year all trains will be required to have no emissions other than the faint aroma of freshly baked biscuits. I can't tell you how I know that, because I work for a very secret agency... but it's true. All true.

Well, at least I know I'm talking to someone who can at least vouch for CSX.

Every time there are regulations, cost goes up. Thats just how it is. If they actually regulate it to a point that we can't meet (which is basically where the unit is now) then costs are going to skyrocket.

No matter what, it will be blamed on the lingering issues left behind from the Bush administration, but whenever something positive happens, they take the credit. As long as they continue to blame any and every problem on the Bush administration, they are in the clear.

Thats what rail will probably get as well. But in order to get those concessions they have to lobby for them. The glaring thing that enforcerpsu is pointing out is the pain it will cause Rail roads and by extension the US economy. Same could be said for trucking, river and ocean transportation. Air Lines are already farked.

Due to many factors we are already the most expensive place to produce many products and services. It doesn't take a business degree to see where this will lead us.

I'll admit, I've been wondering how rail and interstate transport is going to be effected by this, because like I said, the Fed just sets the standards, the states have to come up with a way to meet them.

This is new for the government to tackle since until now the the vast majority of all criteria pollutants came from stationary point sources.

I'm not sure if the EPA can directly dictate to the rail industry under this finding or not, or if the state your rail co is HQd in has to boss you around.

This is partly because we've moved from a manufacturing society to a services and culture exporting one. Personally, I think it's a double edged sword since we need to be the ones who manufacture the things our services and culture (through patents) create.

However to say that the only reason shiat is expensive to make here is because of environmental legislation is a stretch.
