Raymond Dawicki, a 21-year-old from Connecticut with his first name tattooed on the inside of his right arm, said the air force told him last week he was disqualified.

Is that like having your name written in your underwear?

maybe he fears early on-set dementia so he tattooed his name on his name on his arm so he won't forget it.

Wait. So I could've gotten out years ago just by showing my boss this tattoo on my arm? WTF? And now that rule is gone. Dammit.

Just what we need: A bunch of insecure Air Force people with body issues.

2009-12-06 07:18:30 PM
It used to be no more than 25% of any exposed body part may be covered by tattoos that are in good taste

Never heard of the saluting arm thing

"they'll pretty much take whatever they can get these days"

Except for my husband, who found out at MEPS that he's marginally deaf.

Prolly for the best, anyhow.

I think that's Charles Manson's picture.

Oh yeah, and as far as "getting whatever they can take" False.

The USAF is pretty stringent on qualifications for service. They don't accept applicants with GEDs, felonies, or other misc adverse activities/records.

They made me get a waiver because I had too many traffic tickets back when I enlisted.

Subby clearly does not know what the fark he is talking about. Now, if he was talking about the Army perhaps he would have a point (yeah, giving waivers to individuals who nearly qualify for AARP sounds like a great idea!). The AF can afford to be selective because they have been able to meet recruiting and retention goals and in fact at this point they are in the process of "culling the herd" (according to the rumor mill anyway). The ONLY reason they backed off on this thing was that there were some kids who had been accepted and had contracts signed but were then turned away due to this new policy.

2009-12-06 07:26:46 PM
As long as they don't have tattoos all over their face and neck, who cares? A lot of face and neck tattoos look like they were drawings done while the person in question was passed out drunk.

2009-12-06 07:27:23 PM
Time to put a little unwanted info into a fark forum :)

25% applies to everyone already in.

The Air Force is actually DOWNSIZING again, so among other things decided to STOP ACCEPTING recruits with obvious tattoos that can be seen below the forearm of their saluting hand. Passed down a memo to that effect a couple of weeks ago. (Again, only applied to APPLICANTS)

This got a lot of negative press because of people who signed contracts to come in, suddenly being denied after months of being on the "Delayed Entry Program"

So they quickly back peddaled and made it a non-issue again, other than looking like idiots.

They didn't properly explain things to the regular members either, so there were a bunch of terrified idiots with tatoo's who thought their carreers were over.

Yeah... that IS one of the lamest tats possible.
I mean, are you so unsure of your own identity that you need a tat on your body to remind you of your OWN NAME?
I'm ok with tats as an original form of expression. This expresses the situation perfectly... you're a thoroughly unoriginal lamer without a single creative thought in your head.

The world asks "who are YOU?" and the only answer you could give to define yourself is your own name?

i've heard of worse. like those people who think they have tattoos of "strength" in japanese and it comes out as "watermelon."

You people can't see the genius in this?!

If everyone in the armed forces has their names tattooed all over them, the military can save aluminum by not printing up dog-tags.

They'll save tens of dollars!

So a skull with wings and barbed wire wraped around it would be a better answer of who you are?

Is subby seriously suggesting that someone with a tattoo on their arm is automatically an inferior soldier to someone without? The airforce themselves are admitting this is about image, not someones capability as a soldier.

The air force recruiting service instituted a policy on 25 November prohibiting tattoos below the elbow on the right arm of recruits, citing "military image". The service did not want tattoos to be visible when its airmen salute.

Fail, subby. Nice job reading the article.

I can't imagine anyone thinking that image was NOT important, in all services.

Back when we had a draft, I knew guys who had F*CK THE ARMY tattooed right on the back of the saluting hand, so they would see it every time.

Maybe it's not so much that they are taking whatever they can get so much as they are eliminating requirements that were stupid in the first place.

I mean, yes, people with tattoos are generally jackasses, and more often than not they are a net detriment to civilized society, BUT they do often make good soldiers and military personnel. It's just silly to keep them out of the one job they might actually be useful in.

Why was this greenlit? I thought headlines were to be funny or interesting or something and not just trolls. Unless they wanted people to have fun retreading the whole tattoos are dumb/no they're not argument.

Interviewed with Air Force JAG not too long ago. Biggest douchebags I have ever met in my life.

The lieutenant commander general sergeant whatever-the-fark interviewing me got angry because at my interview I did not have a military-style haircut, then disapproved of my picture because I was not standing in front of an American flag (his own personal requirement). He stated that my weight of 190lbs was "dangerously close" to the 215lbs limit for 6'0" officers, and told me that since I took a corporations class he was suspicious that I was a corporate lawyer washout and interviewing with the Air Force as backup. Then the officer under his command went on an unsolicited and extremely agitated 5 min rant about the immorality of marijuana use in this country and how nobody has any respect for the law anymore.

Somebody told me afterward that the Air Force is notorious for being full of evangelical whackos. Not sure if that's true or not, but if 10% of the people in it are like those jokers, fark them with a hockey stick. It's a pity we have to pay the salaries of such people who produce absolutely nothing and just contribute to the already out-of-control jingoism and police statism in this country.
