Iranian authorities have slowed Internet connections to a crawl or choked them off completely before expected student protests Monday to deny the opposition a vital means of communication.

They're learning.

That's okay--there's always sneakernet. Speeds are the same but thanks to the march of technology, packet size is running away with the prize.

I really need to read up on the technical aspects of the Iranian government's attempts at censorship. I find the subject absolutely fascinating...and you never know if/when that sort of understanding might come in handy.

Regardless of what a bunch of Twits think, better to wait until you have a GOOD alternative ready to go or you end up right back HERE (how'd that LAST revolution work out for them?) AGAIN!

Don't PISS away a revolution on yet another bucket of shiat.

because that's JUST what our Founding Fathers did, right?

Be careful. If you do, the next generation of Iranians will probably hate you for meddling when whoever follows the mullahs turns out to be as incompetent and corrupt as all the other leaders of Iran. Their problems will never be their fault. No matter how slight the input (like a guy named Kermit paying a few yahoos to drive a car with a loudspeaker on it) if the outcome isn't perfect you might be held accountable by the externalizing babies of the middle east.

MIguy: Weaver95: because that's JUST what our Founding Fathers did, right?

At least they had the common sense to use guns.

you mean at least they had guns to use. As I understand it, the Iranian government isn't too fond of private gun ownership.

2009-12-06 02:59:29 PM
Sir Roderick Glossop: No matter how slight the input

Yeah, like our previous slight inputs, like taking out secular, democratically elected leaders and replacing them with dictators. Or supporting their enemies during an almost decade long war where over hundreds of thousands of people died.

Slight input like that.

I may never understand the Middle Eastern mindset.

How about enjoying a good meal with some friends and then maybe getting some rest?

Constant war must be exhausting.

MIguy: Remember when Farkers pretended to care about what happened in Iran? Yeah, those were a fun few days.

It wasn't just Fark, if I recall. I seem to remember John McCain proposing to fly drones carrying broadband transmitters around Iranian airspace and other silliness coming from the highest levels of government.

there are times I wish OUR population was more upset about how this country is run. i'm not going to insult the efforts of people who just want the same sort of choices that we have handed to us on a silver platter.

Where do people in the middle east get all this free time to protest all the time?

2009-12-06 03:17:35 PM
Their leaders give the people a great deal of opportunity with net access and the Iranian counterpart to the hipsters ruin it for everybody.

Persepolis: Yeah, like our previous slight inputs, like taking out secular, democratically elected leaders and replacing them with dictators.

My point is that Roosevelt's contention was that covert action is only successful if it is cutting with the grain of the wishes of large sections of the populace and the military. Ajax was a tiny, shoestring operation. Even the CIA says that it only can be said to have "worked" because it nudged a latent movement.

Or supporting their enemies during an almost decade long war where over hundreds of thousands of people died.

You mean after their government sanctioned the overtaking of our lawful embassy, where our civil servants were taken hostage or murdered? A government that declared the United States The Great Satan and called for our destruction?

2009-12-06 03:32:04 PM
If you are not willing to spill blood for freedom then you do not deserve it. As far as I am concerned the Iranian people are cowards and they do not deserve shiat.

Sir Roderick Glossop: You mean after their government sanctioned the overtaking of our lawful embassy

Ok, to review: Taking out a leader of the country and installing a new government that last several decades = shoestring operation

what did you expect? Most of the people in this country don't know what it's like to live in the sorts of conditions prevalent in the middle east.

what they deserve is the freedom to choose for themselves. But the guys with guns keep saying no.

I'm not talking about that, but the people who parrot, "Freedom isn't free! These colors don't run! Blood of patriots!!" when the biggest challenge they face in their lives is the line at the DMV is too long, or their tax returns take too long to process.

Even so, the pure fact we're Americans taints our efforts in their eyes. It's like accepting help from Russia for the Vietnam protests.

Considering the covert actions of American operations, we're not exactly shining beacons of diplomacy ourselves.

The IR sites seem fine. In fact, the ones that have been mentioned as targeted in some articles "opposition strongholds" are university ones there.

Here is a Wikipedia list of Iran Universities (new window) and when clicking through the links they don't seem to be any slower than average web sites.

It is a huge concern to me when I see reports about things that no one else seems to be able to verify in any way. Also, it's seems incredibly unlikely that not even a single student involved with networking infrastructure wouldn't sneak out a report of how the internet is being interfered with.

All I see is a "they're being internet repressed this weekend" yet there isn't any evidence of the kind.
