There's no reason to think this person is getting paid for this crap. If they are, it is probably some small part of a larger range of responsibilities that includes answering phones or moping floors.

They have different audiences. Opera singers are great at captivating educated audiences. Pop stars are good at holding the attention of audiences made up of tone deaf teenage girls, and half the time, they can't sing at all.
