I don't know about best movie ever, but it did inspire the best musical ever.

Yeah, it's way too flawed to be the "finest film of modern times."

And the Redux version just adds to that flaw. In particular, the French Plantation sequence just brings the whole thing to a screeching halt for an extended debate on colonialism. And we saw about all we needed to see of Brando in the original cut.

/thinks the movie just falls apart when we actually meet Kurtz

jake_lex: And the Redux version just adds to that flaw.

I agree. I was very excited to see that at the Cinerama here in Seattle (an amazing movie theater), and learned that almost all of the parts that had been edited out deserved to be.

2009-12-05 05:59:31 PM
Maybe it's because the first version of that I saw was the Redux version, but that movie was boring as all fark.

jake_lex: And the Redux version just adds to that flaw. In particular, the French Plantation sequence just brings the whole thing to a screeching halt for an extended debate on colonialism. And we saw about all we needed to see of Brando in the original cut.

I just saw the movie for the first time and it was the Redux version. It farking rocked. My only complaint about any of the new scenes would be that the dinner conversation at the French plantation went on too long. The whole French Plantation string of scenes felt very disjarring and out-of-place, but I think that's the whole point it's trying to make about colonialism.

I think hardcore fans of movies just generally hate Reduxes/Director's Cuts/Special Editions because they don't like to see anything they love messed with, not because it's actually any worse. Only newcomers to a film or series really have the fresh perspective needed to say if it's any better or not.

/But now I'll have to watch the original version to compare them

The problem with Apocalypse Now was that it is a fine film, but it also ended Coppola's creative streak. He may have lived through the film, but he was never as creatively powerful again. During the '70s, he managed to make some really great films that dealt with humanity through cruelty, repression, the ideal of privacy, and the jail that is heritage and family. And after Apocalypse Now, that vanished. I guess he got what he wanted--fame, money, respect--but then he started doing a lot of crap that never again touched what made him a good director. One from the Heart? The Outsiders (to some extent)? Peggy Sue Got Married? It's day and night from the same director who finally finished off the '80s with the godawful Godfather III and essentially gave up.

And now he's tinkering around with his older films, jamming more meaning into them, forgetting about the economy of filmmaking and letting things go their own route. Apocalypse Now is a good movie, but it did Coppola no favors.

This was one of the worst movies ever made. Can you say "pretentious"? They say it had production problems... and it shows. What was it, 3 hours long for the director's cut? It had maybe 90 minutes of watchable footage.

My cat loves the napalm scene. She can (and does) watch that every time it comes up on air. ears flat back and she's drooling and purring like mad.

This has been one of my favorite movies of all time for almost all of my life. It is flawless in nearly every way. The music, the dark atmosphere... maybe it doesn't make sense to those that aren't familiar with the book it is based on, but regardless, everything comes together perfectly to make a true masterpiece.

True story: A friend of my father's said it was the best movie about the Vietnam War.
"Really?" my father said. "Why?"
"Did you understand the movie at all?"
"Not really."
"Vietnam was the same way."

Sort-of off the subject:

My dad says that "Forrest Gump" has the most realistic Vietnam scenes of any movie he's ever seen (he was a Marine with the 3rd Recon Battalion, who were the first US troops in Vietnam). He actually had to walk out of the theater during the firefight scene, because it upset him.

Conversely, he laughed all the way through "Apocalypse Now" when he saw it, and other people in the theater gave him dirty looks. Which is interesting, because these days "Apocalypse Now" is considered a dark satire/comedy. Back in 1978, though, most took it pretty seriously.

First version I saw was Redux in the theaters. It was far too long and dragged major ass. Regular version is better. Movie would be best if it was all Robert Duvall/Kilgore, all the time.
