His suicide attempt failed?he was so obese that his blood kept clotting and pooling inside his wrists.

Wow.

That's a pretty wicked slideshow.

Because we're all just like you subby obese and shut in.

Christ, and have my hair go all white prematurely because of the exertion? Thanks, but no thanks.

1. Great for this guy! I recommend cycling to everyone who wants to lose weight doing something that's deeply, totally fun.

2. ANTs are pretty awesome bikes!

Props to this guy for doing the hard thing, and losing the weight. But, the last picture is kind of haunting. Looks like he's got the "thousand yard stare" from the nam.

Sweet deal! It doesn't take a whole lot... just a little motivation with support from friends and family.

Wow! No snarks from me. I think this is amazing.

So far my metabolism has kept pace with my appetite, but I'm a middle-aged woman, and it's bound to happen that at some point I will have to start doing some sort of walking/biking regime to stay Sass-O-Slim. That slideshow and story are a great inspiration.

/hair's been silver for ten years now. No hope there.

Great story.
Glad to see someone actually work their weight off doing something fun.
I eat like a horse but biking keeps me fit and healthy.
Anytime I feel burned out to train or ride I need to read this story.
Thanks SUBBY

The moral of this story is that it takes 20,000 bike miles to lose any weight.

"Brown, based in Minneapolis, built a steel bike for Cutshall and delivered it in early 2005. But Cutshall was so afraid of breaking it that it sat in his hallway for months, gathering dust."

Yeah, that's why.

As someone who lost over 100 lbs. by eating right and exercising (not following a fad diet or opting for surgery), this dude gets some serious props from me. It just goes to show you that it can be done the right way, even if it takes a few years to get there.

Way to go, and congrats from one former fat guy to another.

/took me over 3 years
//still cycles quite a bit

Right now I'm limited to MTB, but in CO, that's not much of an issue. Although outside of Boulder and Ft. Collins, and downtown areas, drivers are basically assholes and you take your life into your hands here. Mostly the soccer mom's with big SUV's that try and force you into parked cars....

/no longer rides to work

Losing weight is 25% exercise, 75% diet. It's much more effective to eat less and maintain exertion levels than to train for a marathon but maintain caloric intake.

2009-12-05 05:48:42 PM
Exercise + proper diet = results. Why do so many people fail to get this? Laziness and improper eating is what created all these fad diets. People want the easy way of doing it, and it rarely works. Eat right, take your fat ass outside, and throw away all your fad diet books.

2009-12-05 05:48:52 PM
I walk/bus everywhere and it keeps me from being a hoouse, plus saves me a fortune in bus fare.

I can't believe I walk probably an average of 50 mins a day outside between my jobs and still could stand to lose 30 pounds. :P

2009-12-05 05:51:49 PM
Stories like this almost make me feel bad that I have such a high metabolism and can eat as much crap as I want and stay at 130# with limited exercise.

Almost.

Me thinks you are lacking in exercise intensity. Your activity level is good, but not strenuous enough.

I hate people's attitudes about this....

You never see headlines like, 'Guy eats moderately and rides a bicycle a bit and achieves pretty typical levels of cardiovascular fitness/body composition'.

The story here is you've got a guy who abused his body for years and years, became really fat. Then, he started *not* abusing his body and as a result, now have achieved a 'nothing worth talking about - except that it's much better than what he was before' level of fitness.

This is no different than praising a guy who *no longer rapes women* but he used to rape a lot of women.

Lost 331 pounds, made it with a woman, and got his own greenlight on Fark. Is there anything Scott Cutshall can't do?

Good work, dude.

Don't worry. You can still get high cholesterol, clogged heart valves, and a cancerous colon from eating nothing but crap. I've known more than a few high metabolism/horribly unhealthy hybrids in my time.

Maybe not quite strenous enough most days, today I have to slog everywhere through calf-almost knee high snow drifts, my legs will burn tommorow.

Soon, Cutshall was up to 5 miles. Then 10, 20, 30. By spring 2006, he'd lost 80 pounds, and by the end of the year, his weight loss stood at 160. He rode 1,932 miles in that first year.

Then his wife back in Jersey City was pissed, cos it was Christmas and he was in Albuquerque.

Well, it said he rode 20,000 miles last year, so he's probably on the fitter side of recreational athletes for his age. That's a few hours a day, every day.

Good for him. I'm friends with a guy who lost a similar amount of weight with the aid of cycling; although he did go the surgical route to start with.
He was over 500 pounds, and he had to bring his oxygen tank with him when he first started riding. He's down under 200 now.

I think it's funny that the guy in the article was worried about breaking his bike, and they mention it was a custom steel frame. It's rarely the frame that needs worrying about with bigger riders, (I know; at 6'6" and 225 pounds, I am one.) It's the wheels! Big dudes will wreck a poorly built or underbuilt wheel like nobody's business.
