Reposting from previous thread for the weekend farkers.

We're officially throwing our hat into the ring for the DARPA Network Challenge and organizing a team in hopes of using the power of Fark for good. There are more details on the site, but the gist is this: on Saturday, Dec. 5, DARPA will be deploying 10 red weather balloons in different locations in the lower 48 states. They'll be tethered to the ground, within view of a roadway and accessible by pedestrians. As soon as you find one you report it with the geographical coordinates. The balloons will only be up for 6-9 hours (depending on location and time zone), and any "sightings" afterwards will need to come from social networking and internet searches. The contest will be open until Dec. 14.

The prize for the winning team is $40,000. If we manage to pull this off, Fark will donate the full amount to Toys for Tots. With so many Farkers spread across the country, we might actually stand a chance at winning this.

Melissa (punkrockgirl) will be the overall point person for Fark, entering any findings to the site on TeamFark's behalf, so all finders need to report the coordinates to her. If you're interested in joining a regional/state searching team, please email her and she'll try to get you in touch with others in your area.

Worst case, it's a good excuse for a Sunday drive on a Saturday, or for searching/surfing the internet all day. Best case, lots of needy kids will get a visit from Santa this year.

DARPA Network Challenge GAME DAY, IT'S ON!! GO GO TEAMFARK!!

Here are a few guidelines on how this will all work.

I'm the only one able to enter any confirmed sightings into the DARPA site on TeamFark's behalf. You do not need to make an account yourself. If you happen across one, or if you find coordinates on another site, you need to email me directly, melissa[nospam-﹫-backwards]kraf*com.

When I get credible sightings, I will be rallying the troops to get someone else out for confirmation. Actual photos of the balloon count as credible sightings, and so do photos of you with the DARPA dudes. We're only allowed 25 entries, so we can't screw this up.

DO NOT post any coordinates or actual photos of the balloons in this thread. Others could steal them and use them for their own nefarious purposes (which most likely do not include getting Xmas joy to needy kids). Instead, send them directly to me, melissa[nospam-﹫-backwards]kraf*com. I'm going to assume any coords or pics posted in this thread are fake, and I won't bother trying to confirm.

Any more questions? I'll be here all day, feel free to ask.

my prediction is no one wins the challenge unless they knew in advance or only release them around in a few cities.

Reasons...

it's Saturday

it's a red balloon blowing across 3.5 million square miles.

it's winter and freezing

But there is hope maybe all of FARK can google all the social networking sites participating (from our mothers basements) and let them find the locations for Fark.

like "weather balloon spotted" site:example.com

Yeah, I am thinking this is some sort of follow-up basic research on Intel gathering methods. After the Iran "revolution" thing, some of the old school "sneak around and try to figure out" method guys probably woke up a bit.

The layers used, how people do things like this will be some good basic research for intel gathering, as well as starting and maintaining covert ops and propaganda.

It's good to know we have a few forward-thinkers on our side.

Moreover I think they want to see how efficiently data mining can be used to determine specific unrelated facts. I'm sure there will be at least a few random facebook/twitter posts today that say "RED BALLOOOOOON LOL". I would bet money saying that there are a few small teams that aren't even going to step foot outside today, but instead will be using bots to scour social networking sites looking for people inadvertently reporting these things.

I think the big interesting question today is David vs Goliath. Are the small but tech-savvy teams going to field the best answers or are the huge groups of people working together do the best?

I bet we could put our thinking hats together to figure out where they might be putting balloons too. If I'm a researcher I want to have a few controls, as well as a few experimental balloons.

I'm guessing that they have a few balloons pegged out in the middle of forest park, where anyone is going to be able to see them. They fully expect those to be seen and reported on even if someone isn't going to be a part of the challenge just because the number of people who might see it are so high.

The medium difficulty is probably visible to a portion of the population, but not all of it. I might put something like this in a suburb of Chicago, instead of sitting in a terrifically public place. The amount of people going to see this kind of balloon is lower then those in an intensely public place. I might imagine a medium difficulty balloon being along an interstate, so the only people seeing it that day are people who are traveling.

Finally, they probably have some really difficult balloons. The idea behind these is that so few people are going to be exposed to them and that they are so far out of the way that it just isn't going to be prudent for even large teams like FARK to send people out to view. I believe that these balloons are only going to be reported by the virtue of social media.

Take a moment and think about your surroundings. I live in Kirksville, MO. It's a town of about 25,000 people, 3-4 hours away from St. Louis or Kansas City. However, it has a tech-savvy college campus and a local airport for DARPA officials to fly in and out of, instead of having to drive. This to me makes it seem like a likely location for a "hard" level balloon to be located because it's convenient for DARPA and actually has a good chance of being reported on social networking sites.

I'd also expect that it might also help figure out how people who want to stay compartmentalized in teams but still trade lots of little bits of information stay covert.

So far, Fark has a ringleader and no distributed covert channel. Finding a distributed covert channel that is widespread but also not easily compromised is the challenge. We'll probably never know what they are really after.

this would be a good time to buy a big fat red balloon and tie it to a tree top in the park.

i imagine the first phase of the test is to see how many liars are on the internet.

a person could fly a model plane with a video transmitter & gps.

Or send up a tethered weather balloon.

As of right now, Fark is one of the first and most populous google searches on it, which is good, since the MIT group and another group seem to have a more advanced network for reporting, including a text message hotline to send pics and coordinates and whatnot.

As far as DARPA is concerned, that is just part of this exercise. They want to see HOW people do this. They will look for patterns, new ideas, how info is disseminated and grouped... well, here:

One of postings from prior thread -

Actually, this is EXACTLY what DARPA is hoping for. The whole point of this exercise is to see how people in large groups can organize, spread the word, do the field work, collaborate and return the results.

tinfoil hat on:
they are doing this for the coming martial law to be declared. determining the best way to control the masses and break up any large group communication.
hat off.

Tools like these will do much greater harm to fascist and islamist states than they will do to democratic republics or other types of free states.

Mini Ditka: boluke01:

NO worries man. How'd you meet all those kick ass people in your profile anyway? My only cool story is I was trick-or-treating when I was little and went to Walter Peyton's house and he gave me football cards instead of candy...never thought to get a picture though.

That's awesome! I would have loved to have met Walter. I dunno, just been in the right place at the right time a few times. Had some backstage passes; Spade grew up in my neighborhood and was friends with my brother and his buddies. Still see him from time to time. The Dimebag one is my Holy Grail, I loved that dude.

Cool stories bros. I've seen Mike Singletary a few times but never bother him. Was eating at a Red Lobster at the same time as Billy Williams. Saw creepy Michael Jackson at Disneyland once.

punkrockgirl: DARPA Network Challenge GAME DAY, IT'S ON!! GO GO TEAMFARK!!

Here are a few guidelines on how this will all work.

I'm the only one able to enter any confirmed sightings into the DARPA site on TeamFark's behalf. You do not need to make an account yourself. If you happen across one, or if you find coordinates on another site, you need to email me directly, melissakrafcom.

Instead, send them directly to me, melissakrafcom. I'm going to assume any coords or pics posted in this thread are fake, and I won't bother trying to confirm.

Any more questions? I'll be here all day, feel free to ask.

Admittedly, not seeing them provides much less useful information, but for those posting something like "I didn't see any between X and Y on highway Z" could help to clear certain areas. FWIW, there is also not a balloon in my sexy neighbor's bathroom. At least, not that I can see with the telescope. Giggity.

The experiment is set up backwards if that is the case.

This seems much more like a test to see how accurately and quickly they can expect to receive information gathered by the populace. The winning submission and how it was acquired will tell them some, but the real data is in all the wrong answers they get.

If they were looking for a way to suppress info, they would release something personally embarrassing to the majority of internet users and see how the internet contains it (lolcats cause impotence or something). Or more likely they would run the contest similar to this, but award prize money to everyone that submits coordinates for a balloon based on a sliding scale with more correct coordinates decreasing the amount paid out to each reporter.

I see it as something in response to the biggest problem of the Green Revolution. That is, how to get a good signal to noise filter on the massive info dumps that go on because so much is either crap or intentional disinformation. The thing is, for it to work, you need the populace on your side, so it seems like more of a tool in case of invasion (I'm looking at you Canada) or ways to effectively aid situations like those in Iran so the US can actually do some good and not sit around twiddling our thumbs like we had to last June.

The Fark model seems very effective with a select few moderators with finely tuned bullshiat detectors declaring what work needs to be done so there is a sort of effective command and crowdsourcing all at once.

However, they previously posted a list of possible sightings from twitter chatter.

Portland, OR (Waterfront Park)
Portland, Maine
Irvine, CA (Irvine Spectrum)
Louisville, KY (near Dixie Highway)

Other possibilities:
Dimmick Park (State?) There is a park by that named in Northern California
Oakland Cemetary (State?)historic, 6-acre, cemetary in Atlanta, GA.
Brunswick, CT (there is no city by that name but there is a 104 acre college prep school)

I think you are probably on the right track here. It's set up just wrong to be a study for suppression. If our government wanted to shut down the internet, I think they probably already have as good a shot planned as anyone could develop.

I really think that this is more an experiment in using humans as a sensor cloud. If you look at the trend in military hardware and doctrine, the same slogan appears in different guises: "every soldier a sensor, every marine a collector, put sensor capability on every vehicle, ect..." I think they have realized the massive volume of data this will generate as these changes take effect. I think they are looking at ways to process this flood of data that may or may not be accurate and may also (probably will) have the oppforce actively trying to spread misinformation.

The more I think about this experiment, the more elegant it appears to me. It kind of saddens me that people are taking this immediate knee jerk reaction to it and thinking about how the government must just want to stifle communications.

2009-12-05 02:58:25 PM
Correct me if I'm wrong, or lack the appropriate humorous view of it, but isn't disinformation supposed to be believable? Yes, it's funny that there's a penis in Alaska and giant smiley in Canada, but to properly disseminate bogus sightings, these sightings should be within the set rules and show a random and even coverage.

BlippityBleep: I'd rather not have Big Brother know its population's communication abilities. The Patriot Act is still around, you know.

Big brother knows our communication abilitys. And I am positive that they already know how news travels and how to choke it off if they have to. Remember that china had to outsource to the us to get proper censorship materials.

Perhaps I am looking at this from a different perspective than you, but I am seeing 3 or 4 generations of tech from now, where PDAs with some sort of blue force tracker system are widely disseminated to the lowest levels of our military. I am seeing them as trying to figure out how to interpret all the info that will generate in a time-frame short enough for it to be usable on the battlefield. Look at the page for the contest. They are collecting statistical data on the submissions, and they might ask the winning team their organizational structure.

The dod does not care about your big brother fears. If they don't want info to get out, they just shut down external lines of comm completely. Other branches might, but the DARPA is just looking for ways to fight the next war. The biggest issue we have now, is that most of our combat is not against a uniformed enemy. So the big new challenge is figuring out where the enemy is, and what they are doing in the shortest timeframe.

Being worried about this study is like being worried that the next machine gun or tank round is going to be used against you. I guess its possible, but if its something that bothers you then you have some issues.

Go down to Boundary Bay and have a beer for me. Then you'll have done your good deed for the day.

Still recovering from my night there last night. One can only consume so much Imperial IPA in one sitting, and I exceeded my count and farked the rest of my weekend. Are you a Hamster or Hamstervisitor? Seeing your Guinness tat, I have to ask if you've been to Uisce?

Probably true. But a program that eliminates IP addresses from consideration of "reliable information" by sensing out of boundary marks or sequential marks isn't difficult to conceive, not to mention- they know where the balloons are. So they see every error as misinformation or the result of misinformation.

Damn, Groundspeak's confirmed 6 balloons so far. Went out at around 11 this morning to take a drive along the coast, but didn't see any balloons. Then again, weather here in NJ is sheer crappiness--cold, wet rain & slush w/practically zero visibility.

This is where sites like 10balloons.com come into play. They try to bring people together to submitting locations of balloon sightings. But the folks at 10balloons.com aren't even reviewing the results before they are posted for everyone to see, and that makes it so that people can easily mess around with the maps.

The lesson to be learned: review information the general public gives you before posting it online. Although, honestly? That was pretty obvious.

Well, I had an idea...if someone was foolish enough to host a photo on an image hosting site, it might be easy to find. You could check flickr, photobucket, etc. for keywords darpa, balloon (this date only), and so on. Bonus points if you can pull the EXIF data. Compare against user profiles for location data.

I drove around campus and near the CDC building and a little ways down Harmony. Traffic was a nightmare near the highway, so I couldn't get near it. No red balloons (they'd have to be very high up to go over the tree lines around here, so you should be able to see them quite a ways off).

And the sun has gone beyond the mountains, so it's dusk here now, and they should be taking down the balloons in CO and the adjacent states.

Tell them to go play in the traffic and leave Mommy alone. Also you might ask them to look for a farking red balloon while they are out?

Mustaf Herod Upyur Poupr: I still can't figure out why one of the moderators deleted my post where I wrote "Jesus is Xenu" on Canada. Under the guise of broken images. They're all on my photobucket account, and I'm lookin' at em right now. They're not broke. What's with the censorship today, anyway? Or did I violate a new rule or something?

I mean, come on! This is FARK. I should be able to post a photoshop of Jesus and Xenu spooning while the apostles pour milk on em, and nobody here would even bat an eye if I did. Seriously.

No, the same site has many pictures of balloons without the DARPA logo. Plus, "In addition to the numbered white banner trailing below, balloons may also have a rectangular placard with a DARPA logo." (^)

Good deal. Now that the balloons are down, I can tell you that I found one, and I spoke to the DARPA guy briefly. He mentioned that one aspect of the experiment was to see how trust issues affect the distribution of information among social networks, or hinder it. They're especially looking at cooperative vs. competitive behavior in information-distribution systems, and how that has an influence on the quality of the final information product. He specifically asked me if we were actively undermining other groups, and I told him we were actively jamming at least one project. He seemed pleased to hear it.

Spotted a red balloon in Wheeling IL on Hintz road and the train tracks. This is NOT a darpa balloon that I can tell, there was no number, and definatly was no one there from darpa. Like the cat in the hat said, find out where it's not.

Too bad, I got all excited when I saw it.

GPS: 42.07'23.85" N by 87.55'21.90" W

It was for sure a red weather balloon of the correct size, but had no other markings on it. I tried taking a picture, but was too dark for my cell phone camera.

First spotted @ 4:45 PM local time, drove up to it on the way home at 6:45 PM.

Posted this in the other thread, sorry about the repeat.

Mustaf Herod Upyur Poupr:

Nope. That's a function.

It's an algorithm. A one-step algorithm, but an algorithm nonetheless.

An algorithm is a mathmatical expression.

An algorithm is a sequence of one or more computational operations.

The delete key is not an equation.

Neither is bubble sort, but it's still an algorithm. If they coded it (e.g. SQL request to delete all records), it's technically an algorithm.

While putting up farky words on the map may be fun, the farky words make them easy to exclude as real data. Perhaps randomizing the disinformation makes more sense.

I hope somebody is operating at a deeper level than this.

The winning team, I predict, will be one that is able to exploit a cooperative technique to consolidate data with other players. Perhaps some of you ought to work on that endgame strategy.

Also needed is a secure way to communicate privately with authenticated partners. Long term fark membership, using farkmail accounts might be the ticket.

Just brainstorming here.

OMG! Apparently, recently released emails show that there are really 42 balloons, and they are hiding the data to make it look like 10! What else are they covering up!

What if we just cover all of the US with dots? I mean all of it. Then we can go back to having fun with farky words!

I'm no expert, but you would want to use some sort of IP hiding system so that they couldn't eliminate informants posting too many locations. Just my thoughts.

Good for them, leave it to the people searching to do what they will with the winnings, they played it the way the real world works.

MIT
We're giving $2000 per balloon to the first person to send us the correct coordinates, but that's not all -- we're also giving $1000 to the person who invited them. Then we're giving $500 whoever invited the inviter, and $250 to whoever invited them, and so on....The remaining $250 is donated to charity....

I would have chosen the locations differently. Some should have been in relatively unpopulated areas. From the map posted above, all the locations are visible to an extremely large number of people. Like maybe one in Big Bend National park, or Grand canyon, or rural Kentucky town hear where Drew lives.

This is the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency managing the thing. They're probably figuring that people in Idaho don't need to worry that much about seeing a Chinese War Blimp on the horizon if everybody on the coast is capable of reporting it first.

I want to see a detailed write up on MIT's strategy and techniques. Being conservative, I like the capitalistic slant, but it's also important to know how they consolidated info while maintaining security, how they confirmed sightings, and how they recruited their participants, and stuff like that.

Hmm.
Placement was on the borders.

Looks like the insertion points for an invasion of the US.

The challenge could be taken to simulate how long it would take to identify and tag an armed invasion force that knocked out the major comm grids.

Someone at DARPA has been playing too much Modern Warfare 2.

Not when there is profit to be made. Information was hoarded for personal gain. The internet operates much better when it's for the greater good.

Had all the various groups been working together I doubt it would have taken more than an hour.

Kudos to DARPA for getting $Millions$ in research data for $40,000 in cash and whatever $'s it cost to send out the balloon folks.

Great work by the numerous teams created by The Network Challenge!

Congratulations to Team MIT!

Yes. But it would be a good idea to have some sort of instruction on the page.

What I see is that if'n ya want info from ANYBODY, e-mail. All specifics have to held tight. Ask if the area you want to explore is useful...by email. Even to say it's not, is info that we can't let out.
