I ran a 56km race today. Didn't see any. Of course, it was 56 loops around a 1k trail, so it's not surprising that I didn't see a whole lot of variety.

B. When this is all over I swear to god, if you do not post EVERYTHING about your encounter on Fark (or at least a link)...Michael Scott will burn The Portland Branch and - well, ummm all of Portland to the ground.

You have been warned.

It's really not all that exciting, but as you wish...

Scruffinator: gregscott: While putting up farky words on the map may be fun, the farky words make them easy to exclude as real data. Perhaps randomizing the disinformation makes more sense.

What if we just cover all of the US with dots? I mean all of it. Then we can go back to having fun with farky words!

OMG! Apparently, recently released emails show that there are really 42 balloons, and they are hiding the data to make it look like 10! What else are they covering up!

BLEAH on MIT.

Paying for the sitings worked, I guess, but doesn't it also in some ways defeat the challenge?

Also interesting that on the final map that its almost all "costal" sites.

I'm no expert, but you would want to use some sort of IP hiding system so that they couldn't eliminate informants posting too many locations. Just my thoughts.

Just sent MIT a congratulatory note, along with a guilt trip about how they just robbed hundreds of kids of decent toys.

2009-12-05 08:49:59 PM
Well, damn. Just got a press release from DARPA saying they found a winner, the MIT group pulled it off. I was still two short :(

Thank you so much for all of your work today guys. All of the legwork, accepting random emails from a strange internet chick, etc. I never could have gotten this far without you.

Too exhausted to type more now, I think I'm going to relax and have a few beers.

Good for them, leave it to the people searching to do what they will with the winnings, they played it the way the real world works.

MIT
We're giving $2000 per balloon to the first person to send us the correct coordinates, but that's not all -- we're also giving $1000 to the person who invited them. Then we're giving $500 whoever invited the inviter, and $250 to whoever invited them, and so on....The remaining $250 is donated to charity....
