I'm never one who favors governmental control over benign activities, but I have to say I hate this tanning trend. What's wrong with your skin the way it is? Can you not be attractive with white skin? Do you know that tanning is the result of damage to your skin, and sometimes later in life it results in cancer? Is that worth it?

Tanning salons? Boob jobs? Manicures and fake fingernails? Tattoos? Where are the snowflakes getting the money for all this crap? Let them run around pale and ugly like we had to do.

Isn't a pretty large percentage of Texas naturally tan already? Why have tanning booths?

"Asinine" , really?
It's a proven fact that artificial tanning increases skin cancer propensity. I don't see how this is asinine.

I can't figure out why anyone needs a tanning booth in Texas. I'm in Texas. I try to avoid sun exposure. But I'm still tan 10 months out of the year.

On a serious note, I've seen pale-skinned teenagers (as well as adults) get artificial tans since well before Obama became president. And personally, I think they always look better without the tan.

Forbidden Doughnut: Isn't a pretty large percentage of Texas naturally tan already? Why have tanning booths?

Because there's this thing called "winter", during which time, due to the motion of the Earth and the relative change of inclination of the Earth's axis as it orbits the Sun, causes the northern hemisphere of the Earth (of which Texas - and all of North America for that matter - is a part of) to tilt away from the Sun for a period of approximately 6 months, during which less sunlight is received, thus hindering the amount of a "tan" one can get during this time period.

Hence, for at least those 6 months, an argument could be made that such tanning salons are needed to keep a tan obtained in the summer, and/or to get the body to produce the necessary vitamin D we need during this period, in order to maintain health.

You asked...

Anyhow, personally I think tanning at a salon is a waste of time and money. I also recognize that it has its medical applications (people with psorisis and other skin conditions are frequently prescribed tanning visits), as well as its cosmetic applications. From what it sounds like in Texas, the current laws cover the use of tanning beds by teens adequately. Once they start bringing in the parent for "kids" between 16-18 years old, those same kids will just go back to backyard/beach tanning, which is arguably less controlled and more dangerous, not less, over the long term.

I would be willing to bet that this whole thing has nothing to do with tanning beds, and more to do with (what seems to be?) the popularization of the "guido" look, with the crazy deep orange spray-on "tans"; and some lawmaker's daughter or such got such a wacked tan. They asked their kid how they got such a tan so quickly, and the kid, being dumb, told them how; they then went on to "think of the children" and went "OMGWHARGARBLE!!1!2" - "ban the (fake) tans!" by banning the ability for the kids to go into such a place without a parent (ie, to "supervise" the spray-on tanning process - I mean, because of the tanning beds, don't you see!).

I think this whole thing is likely a "watch me wave my hands to distract you from the real issue I have" lawmaking; the dumbass legislature and parents will probably fall for it, nodding their heads like the stupid cows they are.

Really what we need are less laws, not more, for this kind of crap.

There are ways to obtain vitamin D from one's diet in the absence of adequate sunlight. For example, the inuits are rather dark-skinned and therefore can't make very much vitamin D from sunlight (which is rather scarce in Alaska), but there's enough vitamin D in their diet that there's never been very much selective pressure for them to become lighter-skinned (as there has been among most other northern human populations).

Hmmmm, if only there were foods found in almost every refrigerator which had vitamin D add for exactly this reason.

I use a tanning bed when I know I'm going on vacation to the beach - I want a bit of a base tan before I'm out in the sun all day so I don't burn.

Other than that, don't need a tanning bed.

It is really frightening to think people are doing that on purpose. I understand ranch hands and farmers that get all weathered looking - not a lot of choice. But doing it to be more attractive is utter fail.

Well, we have solved most of our major problems compared to, you know, the rest of the United States. Besides, our legislature only meets for a short period every two years so they need to get as much work done in as little time as possible.

I'm pretty much convinced that the reason Texas has pretty much come through this recession unscathed compared to almost any other state is because our legislature is almost never actually in session.

Good. Teenagers are not smart enough to know what's best for them. Think back to when you were a teen. Were you smart then? Of course you weren't. You can complain all you want about the principle of the law getting involved in this but I'm sure there was something stupid and destructive you did when you were young, and you wish that someone had stopped you.

It's not just about the cancer risk. It's more about appearance. People who tan heavily starting in their teens look like a used handbag by the time they're in their 20s. When I was in Italy, there were some sun-worshipping girls in their early 20s who already had the skin of 40 year olds. Not really wrinkled, just rough and worn, the youthful smoothness gone. It seems that they have some kind of immunity to seeing how horrible their skin looks to the outside world, just like anorexics can't see how sickly they actually are.

I don't know about this. I don't think tanning is good for you if you're a teen - but I also don't think the government should be this invasive about something that only MIGHT be dangerous if overused.

Uhh, well, if im gonna have to pay their hospital bill when they get evelop skin cancer then why the fark shouldnt they ban shiat like this? All of you on here pushing for universal healthcare had better get used to losing freedoms such as this. Whats next? Smoking? I'd support that since im paying the hospital bills. Regulating how much TV you can watch? I'd again have to support that since its directly related to your health, and of ocurse, im footing the hospital bill
