I saw Terminator Salvation a few weeks ago, and the whole time in my head I was thinking "I hate this so much, God I hate this". I can't tell you why I kept watching. T1 & T2 were such amazing movies.
Xtian Bale just slept through his role, and he did the Batman growl through the whole thing. The guy who played Reece was so unconvincing. He does seem to be working on a career based on playing other actors characters in reboots.
Terminator, Alien, Predator, Star Wars are all franchises that were so promising that just went to shiat.

I liked the idea, I liked the story, I disliked the execution. I thought the movie was a solid 6 but I felt that way about T3 as well. There is definitely story to be told there. But this whole mash up of robots who want to be humans and humans that are secretly part robot is getting old.

I think the thing that was so engaging about the first two was the bleakness of the future. Here we are watching these people fighting in the "present" in the setting of happy people, sunshine, and the world at it's peak all the while knowing if they fail it will be mountains of skulls, despair, and suffering. In the first movie when Reese keeps having those nightmares/flash backs I think it really struck a cord. The future for humanity was so horrific that you actually felt the desperation in Reese and in T2 the somewhat insane Sarah.

I always liken the first two to that cliche scene in movies where the good guy and the bad guy claw along the floor to reach the gun first. T3 was just straight up action noise and T:S was much the same. About the only thing I really liked about T3 was the terminator was a jerk and T:S was that not everyone was stroking off John Connor.

Terminator 1 is now the only terminator movie I still enjoy.
At the time T2 was epic, great effects that blew you away but now I see a movie that wanted to make a good guy terminator to feature Arnold and did considerable damage to the characters of Sarah Connor and John Connor. Sarah you could understand a bit, she would be thrown in a mental ward if she was caught, but she shouldn't have ever been caught.
John just seems like a whiny kid now.

T3 was a stupid ending with another retread of the send robots back in time.

What we were all waiting for was something more like Terminator Salvation but with a more straight forward plot of taking on skynet.

The Ideal would have been the adaptation of the Epic Comic's series Terminator:Burning Earth done by little known at the time Artist Alex Ross.

If this means that Summer Glau gets to be a terminator again, I will support it.. fap fap fap.

Whoever buys it should bring Josh Friedman on board. He got it, and was able to expand on both the mythology and the characters in very interesting ways.

I just love how he turned the myth of John Connor upside down in the series finale ... that was a Grant-Morrison-(?)-breaking-The-Flash's-legs move and it could have been brilliant had it played out.

I was in Barnes and Noble this week and thumbed through Mythology: The DC Comics Art of Alex Ross.

Don't care for his political beliefs, but holy shiat can that guy draw/paint. I would love to have the statue someone made of the Superman from Kingdom Come.

One of the things that always interested me as a concept was time loops and time travel (which seems to have happened in the film) and the Temporal War (in the TV series)

Imagine a Skynet which is aware of all of the former pasts that had existed. Imagine a skynet which has some motivation that is leading it to conquest and enslavement of humanity (but to its opinion a much more logical path for humanity)

T3 killed it, besides anything that has time travel with intentions of purposely manipulating past events to influence the time line is destined to be brutal upon one's suspension of disbelief.

Kyle Reese: Listen, and understand. That terminator is out there. It can't be bargained with. It can't be reasoned with. It doesn't feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And it absolutely will not stop, ever, until you are dead.

You are right on the money re: the first two showing the bleakness of the future and really selling it. Good God, in the first two, there was just infantry, IEDs, and technicals. You believed that we were really fighting for our survival. Now we see they've got Blackhawks, A-10s, SSNs...we didn't look like we were hurting for much.
And, to be fair, as I'm thinking about it as I'm typing, it is early in the timeline. Things surely would have gotten worse. Equipment breaks down/destroyed, qualified personnel killed, etc.
But in the end, I wasn't buying the desperation. And the man/machine guy moral dilemma was so obtuse and clumsy.

I watched Terminator Salvation last night, and I thought it was awesome. Many homages to the older movies, and they didn't go full Transformers with the robots which is kind of what I was worried about. I had a blast with it, some people are never satisfied.

When I watched Terminator Salvation all I could think was "Man, this is so much better than that GI Joe movie and Transformers 2." I suppose I could have watched it outside of that sequence of movies and thought it was worse, but I didn't.

I think it would have been better played off of the television series, which was a lot better than the last two movies.

You're the first person I've ever seen who enjoyed the "homages." If they were any more blatant McG would have hopped in front of the camera and said "REMEMBER THAT?! FROM THE OTHER MOVIES?! NOW WE'RE DOING IT AGAIN! MCG BABY!!"

The problem with old/new viewers is this:

New tech 'renders' the new films with very slick effects, sound, color, etc. Whereas with the older stuff, what we called groundbreaking then is old hat now - for the most part.

In absence of Michael Bay 'Splode-CGI, what we had to do back then was actually make what we were seeing matter, and we did that through story. Sure there was and always will be crap, but such films like Alien, T1 and so on were driven through story.

Show a modern kid the older, story rich film and they can't get past seeing crummy effects. It stalls them. To us, it was bleeding edge, to them it's like watching old Tom Baker Dr. Who (Which I love). Great stories, but damn do some of those sets and monsters really force you to suspend disbelief.

So. Johnny with his ADD/OCD/FTP/OPP goes into the Phantom Menace and jizzes all over himself because the effects are what carry the film. We go in there having been raised on Story Prior, and see a huge wankfest dripping with CGI-Spooge covering up the most barren, poorly thrown together sorry-ass bag of bones that isn't from the same graves of the former movie(s).

Znuh: I'm with you there. I think the biggest problem is saturation. Strictly sticking to the realm of SciFi/Fantasy I can think of District 9, Cloverfield, LOTR, BSG, Firefly, SG, Dr. Who as fine films/shows blending good story with good FX.
In the same breath, there are easily 5 to 1 bad films to good ones.
Not sure what the solution is, maybe more books, more unadulterated and unsupervised playtime, more nuclear family interaction; less TV, less video games.

I picked up the Director's Cut at Target. It is much better than the studio release. Adds back some cut scenes that we saw in the trailers but not in the studio release.

One of the great things about the better done effects of 70s and 80s movies is that the use of actual physical models still, for the most part, looks more real than computer graphics. LotR showed this well as a brilliant modern use of models (and a good amount of CG, but still, it was a nice blend).

The perfect example, of course, is compare the "Return of the Jedi" Death Star battle footage with any of the footage of the prequels. Using plastic models and flying tennis shoes (well, just the one) looks much more believable to me, and the transition of Millennium Falcon skimming the surface of the Death Star to flying inside was and still is an amazing bit of footage.

Completely agree. Back in the late 80s, after seeing stuff like TRON and The Last Starfighter, I really had hopes for CGI. Peter Jackson got it right - CGI is just one tool of many in your bag of tricks. You use the right tool for the job. LoTR looked so damn incredible because of the models and miniatures - and had one hell of a story to go with.

Lucas effectively killed my CGI boner. Just because you can make a movie entirely out of CGI doesn't me you should; just like yes, you can put your dong in the pickle jar - but why the hell are you doing that anyway?

I don't get the love for Buffy or Angel, but Firefly I can definitely get behind. Didn't care for Whedon much before I got to see Firefly and Serenity.

I picked up the BR version as well. I saw it in the theater and was hoping the director's cut would be better. It wasn't... unless you want to see a side-boob shot of Moon Bloodgood's tits.

I've read the 2 original plotlines for this movie. Originally Bale was supposed to be Marcus in the movie. So when he came on Nolan did some rewrites to make the John Conner part bigger.

In the original script Conner was to be killed and they cut his skin off and put it on the Marcus terminator (?) so that people wouldn't lose hope. Another plot line that's on CHUD somewhere stated that when they go to rescue the prisoners at Cyberdine when they break in part of it is like a resort with people just mulling around and relaxing. Although they're not people. Skynet was taking the memories of people, killing them, and placing them into terminator copies of themselves... thus preserving the human race. Hence the title "Salvation". When the reskinned Connner plot got out onto the internet they had to go into rewrite mode quick.

If you watch the film knowing a few of those tidbits you can see where it's really a wandering mess. All in all it's pretty disjointed. I liked the pursuit in the beginning after the facility was blown up with a nuke, and the last part of it where they were fighting the T-800 was really well done. But with a vastly changed plot line it became a meandering mess. I'm not expecting Shakespeare but this should have been thought out again and possibly reshot. I rate T3 just a bit higher than this.

Joss Whedon is trying to buy the rights to the Terminator franchise since Halcyon went bankrupt.
