(The Sun) Amusing Convincing prison guards those tomato plants you're growing is not marijuana for 5 months? That takes skills. Decorating them as Christmas trees? Now you're just taunting them   (thesun.co.uk) divider line 32

You should really be able to earn a Get Out of Jail Free card for situations like this. It couldn't damage most countries' criminal justice systems any more than they already are.

Hah, bravo. What a bunch of friggin' dolts.

I'm pretty sure he was the most popular guy in that jail. The guy that ratted him out has probably already got the shiv.

well thank goodness they had him locked up where he couldn't get to any drugs...

sounds like it was getting close to harvest too...

Rickerkioz: sounds like it was getting close to harvest too...

Which is why they busted him now. Why do work yourself when you can just appropriate someone else's work?

Prisoners are allowed to grow plants in Britain?

SeamusFerrell: Prisoners are allowed to grow plants in Britain?

My question would have been "Prisoners are kept in cells in Britain?" I thought they were all free-range.

Damn. Those little round red things we ate off the plants sure were tastey. Now it makes me wonder what we were eating.

Ok well I dunno. Im just going to assume that all the characters of this story are actually just rocks or something.

I love how the article makes the assumption that the guards had no idea what he was growing. Doesn't it seem more likely that they knew but turned a blind eye to it because they were taking a cut of the proceeds? When the fellow inmate "turned him in", they could no longer pretend they didn't know.

A cut? Why take a slice when you can have the whole tin of brownies?
Part of me wants to believe the screws genuinely thought it was a tomato plant.

Which sort of sounds like, "Why wait for the goose to lay the golden eggs when you can kill it and take them all out at once?"

"...guards then identified the plants using Google snaps."

Am I just outside the loop on this? WTF is google snaps?? Is that Limey for GIS?

/mmmmm... google snaps

I've actually heard of people trimming a cannabis plant down so it can be made to look like a common houseplant, so I can believe that officers might not recognize it without looking much closer. But what about the smell? And, assuming he got away with it, how was the inmate eventually planning to explain the conspicuous absence of any tomatoes?

I'm with the previous poster who said the cops knew all along and were just waiting until harvest time to bust the guy.

mellow relaxed prisoners.

Oh, someone should put a stop to that right away.

Yes, but normally you aren't allowed the high-intensity lights for a proper grow op.
