GAT_00: TSA hate and union hate?

What's not to hate about either of those?

2009-12-04 03:07:47 PM
Considering unions still aren't legal in some states (Texas is one of them, which is why they delicately discuss "collective bargaining"), but TSA is required to have a presence in every US airport... I don't think this will go far.

Without a union, the TSA will be at the mercy of the government.

As much as the TSA rent-a-cops annoy me, I would hate to see them go on strike. Imagine that shiatstorm hitting all of our airports.

2009-12-04 03:10:44 PM
Also, it can always be worse. Currently, I just get a body scan every time I am profiled as a potential threat to airport security. They rifle through my underwear collection in search of the hazardous materials I am no doubt transporting (shampoo, mouthwash, bottled water...).

If the TSA unionizes, I'll be getting nude body scans while modeling my underwear collection and being forced to use the non-hazardous materials I am carrying for unclean purposes.

Huh? There is union labor in Texas. Including the AFGE (AFL-CIO).

What the hell are you smoking??

Unions are legal here in Texas.

What isn't legal here in Texas is to require union membership in order to work in a shop.

My father's a member of the Federal corrections officer's union, and he lives and works in Texarkana. I think you might be confusing "right to work" with having non unions, and in any event state law wouldn't have any applicability to the unionization of Federal employees.

For many union supporters, this is tantamount to unions not being legal. I mean, what good is having a union if you can't force everyone to join.

Wow, I take off for a few minutes and all hell breaks loose.

Maybe I'm confused. I used to work for a teachers' association in Texas and it was my understanding that we used collective bargaining in lieu of labor unions. The two didn't sound terribly different to me--the same thing wrapped in different boxes.

The fact that TSA workers are federal employees makes it a moot point anyway. I guess I didn't think of them as such because most of them were wards of the state before they found themselves so gainfully employed.

A friend of mine used to work at TSA. From what he told me, most of the staff isn't intelligent enough to figure out what a strike is, and very few of them make enough money to go on strike for any considerable amount of time.

Keep in mind, these were the guys that would go through your luggage looking for dildos and such.

I don't want to think about that, but it wouldn't surprise me.

Most of the things he mentioned I can't repeat because I want to eat food again at some point in the future. The stuff I can mention is that they were all incredibly lazy and had no inspiration to do anything other than look for hilarious things in people's luggage.

When the politicians bring up the subject of the TSA, it should be about disbanding it and starting from scratch. I don't know about the other airports but the TSA I met at JFK airport were horrible.

Also the directions on how to proceed were scattershot. In Boston's Logan airport you put your shoes in the bin. In JFK you put your shoes on the belt not in the bin. And the agents at JFK were actually yelling at people.

I wish I had a setup like that. He told me that one day he didn't look in a single bag for several days in a row.

Ok, I don't wish I specifically had that job in place of the one I have now, but if I was going to be an unskilled worker making more than minimum wage, it would be the job I picked.

I don't have a problem with the TSA workers unionizing. I worked at and airport a couple of years ago (MHT in Manchester, NH) for a newsstand. I dealt with the TSA folks on a regular basis, and they're good folks.

Besides, not all unions are evil. I can think of two right off the bat that are not too bad. For starters, the IBEW (electricians and line workers) is continually training the people that keep our power grid up and running.
Another one, the Shettmetal worker's one, better known as the "Tinknockers," is always training and making sure that the work is up to snuff.
