It's possible to really, really hurt yourself if you don't know what you're doing. If you're good at it, you can make teaching it your career.

Why is this biatch surprised again?

Well someone needs to keep them from claiming that yoga will cure cancer, swine flue, your herniated disc, etc.

Yes, it's a steep price, but it's also a formal qualification. It's a one-off, and it's about ballpark range for teacher training. The people balking at this are scared they are going to be found lacking in the whole 'ability to teach' area. Guys, just suck it up & accept that your area now expects you to know what you're doing before you teach.

Also, she's an idiot. these licensing laws hurt only the general public while helping those who get licensed. Her 2500 fee will be more than offset by her gains from all the competition she won't get due to the hurdle for others. Please, by all means, license certify and regulate my profession, o government!

Yoga is hard. I got told to take yoga by two different doctors so I could 'relax' (apparently indulging one's alcoholism on the couch doesn't count as 'relaxing') and accidentally went to one of the advanced classes my first (and only) time out.

I think I pulled/tore/injured everything. EVERYTHING. And for the last fifteen minutes or so, I just stood there. I can imagine a bad teacher would have made it worse. So, yes, people who teach should be certified. WTF is her problem?

You need separate certification for that.

This. I think some licensing requirements are outrageous, and maybe the fee is a little too steep here, I'm not sure what the yoga certs are by state and don't really care enough to find out.

But I don't see a problem with a licensing process for people who bend and contort you for a living.

I thought so too. I was gonna up my prescription since I was still tense but the docs said no. Fark doctors anyway, always trying to get me to do stuff and screwing up my buzz.

clearly she hasn't been tuned into reality for some time. Nobody can self regulate.

As in you were treated later for sprains you got as a result of the class, or you just felt sore/injured? Because starting any new exercise program will result in the latter, if it doesn't then you're doing it wrong.

And on the topic of the article... I had to dedicate four years of my life to my job to even have a chance to take the professional cert, and I have to dedicate another six of 'em if I ever want to teach (technically more than that, actually, since you need industry experience for anyone to accept your application for a teaching position).

A couple thousand dollars and a weekend for a pretty strongly profitable career that's not even subject to real oversight? Cry me a farking river.

The silver lining is that we are one step closer to getting that happy ending by a licensed therapist.

It's an interesting question, though: I teach fencing. You can potentially get killed fencing, if you don't follow safety rules. Yet, like most other martial arts and combat sports, there's no licensing regulation. There is a national governing body, but many people don't bother to join or have broken with it. So who gets to say who does, or doesn't teach this?

There are already liability laws in place, FWIW.

And what exactly is "hours of paperwork"?

I can fill out a LOT of forms in an hour. Did she have to write an expository essay question on "Why I Want To Teach Yoga"?

If she had to take a class and write an exam, that's not what I'd call "paperwork".

If she had hours of forms to fill out, I call baloney.

Well, in all fairness, a lot of Yoga instructors have trouble reading anything that doesn't start with "Namaste" or have lots of artistic renderings of the sun.

That teacher should be KHITBASH'd, a good teacher will get a full workup from you and take you at the pace you require.

My teacher is amazing and she gets re-certified and takes workshops what seems like at least twice a month. It's an incredible tool for what ails you if, like most things in life, you find the right teacher.

Well, a lot of people are practicing yoga without any CLUE of what they're doing. I happened to be at the local Hindu temple a few weeks ago, and there was this old Indian dude giving a class on yoga. For one thing, his dress did not inspire any confidence. He just had on a white loincloth and a bunch of crap on his forehead. I understand that quality yoga gear from Prana etc. is quite expensive for a beginner, but for Pete's sake, if you're doing this for a living, go out and spend a few hundred.

I asked him about his certifications and he said such and such had trained him. He seemed to have no clue what a "certification" was. To make things worse, every question I asked him had some answer which had long Sanskrit words. He kept droning on about breathing and controlling your mind to achieve the right mental states. Jesus, I just want to be able to touch my ankles.

Long story short, I'm taking lessons at the Y from a perky 20 year old gal named McKayla, and everything's cool now...

/Seriously all you white people out there, I just don't get why you are so much into yoga. Do you observe Ramadan just to lose weight?

Well, when you have to pay $2500 to get "certified", it's been taken to an unhealthy new level. Do you understand the actual purpose of yoga? No Google cheating...
