arkansas: Never had a problem with Newegg myself.

Me either, but that's still pretty funny.

Newegg is still my #1 online tech retailer.

Does anyone even use those stupid things?

I've been an extremely satisfied Newegg customer for 8 years now. This is obviously a fluke -- but admittedly a funny one. Newegg has always bent over backwards to take care of any issues I had, even if they weren't my fault.

One time I built 3 kiosk systems for a friend. Turns out the power supply in one was bad (hardly surprising, as it's the power supply that came with the case). Newegg gave me an RMA without hassle, and I told him to "put the case back in the box, write the RMA on the side, and send it back."

And he did exactly that. He put the case -- which contained the motherboard, CPU, memory, wireless network card, and DVD-ROM drive -- back in the box and shipped it back. I realized too late that not everyone equates "send the case back" with "remove everything else first". Oops.

Newegg graciously shipped me replacement identical parts. I paid shipping, which was more than fair. This is why I usually don't even price-shop anymore; Newegg is almost always the least expensive, and even when they aren't, their customer service is worth a few extra bucks.

What I like most about Newegg is that they keep your order history FOREVER. My very first Newegg order, shipped March 28 2002:

$29.00 - VGA ATI OEM|XPERT 2000 PRO 32M AGP% - OEM
$45.00 - SPARKLE FSP350-60BT 350W ATX12V Power Supply - OEM
$40.00 - AMD Duron 1.0G Morgan 1.0GHz Socket A Single-Core Processor Model D1000AMT1B - OEM
$5.00 - SUNON KD1208PTB2 80mm Case Fan - OEM
$52.00 - MB SISS735|5P1A K7S5A_ECS - Retail
$12.00 - CPU Cooling - Retail

Subtotal $183.00
Tax $0.00
FedEx Express Saver $24.28
Order Total $207.28

Other gems from my order history. Remember, at the time, these were LOW LOW LOW prices:

$389 (3/3/03) 1 x ATI A-I-W RADEON 9700PRO Radeon 9700PRO 128MB 256-bit DDR AGP 4X/8X Video Card - Retail
$35 (1/31/04) 1 x POWERINVERT|HISG 2-OL INV-300(OSC) - Retail (no-name inverter w/ fan & all-metal case, still going strong)
$130 (4/22/02) 1 x DDR 512MB|64X64 2100 CL2 2I D-E% - Retail
$111 (5/22/02) 1 x HITACHI Deskstar 120GXP IC35L080AVVA07 80GB 7200 RPM IDE Ultra ATA100 3.5" Hard Drive -Bare Drive
$115 (5/31/02) 1 x SOLTEK SL-75DRV5 462(A) VIA KT333 ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail (best motherboard out of the AGP era)

Hmmm. Five of my orders have six-digit order numbers. Anyone got a 5?

No five-digit order numbers for me, but I can beat your order date.

floor9: This is obviously a fluke

Not if you consider that people are usually more likely to complain about something that went wrong than if everything went smoothly. Unsatisfied customers are usually disproportionately represented in online forums.

Politics being the exception, not the rule.

Newegg has a great order and delivery system. Prolly the best aspect of the whole company. It's not like their prices are much better than anywhere else on the internet but they'll give you free shipping on practically everything and it'll get there in a day or two.

Something I learned while working retail:

Person who has a good experience tells (on average) one (1) other person.

Person who has a bad experience tells (on average) eleven (11) other people.

Can't say I have ever had a problem with Newegg. If I am building a PC half my parts tend to come from them.

I always choose the cheapest shipping when I buy things from Newegg because it always gets there in 2 days anyway. If I picked 1 day shipping I think the item would magically appear on my desk.

arkansas: Never had a problem with Newegg myself.

Neither have I. I usually get PC parts from either them or Tiger Direct. Those 2 tend to have the lowest prices on PC parts.

When the other half built our last computer, we ordered everything from Newegg. It came in three different shipments, presumably because they had stuff all over the country.

Anyway, the one package we got was supposed to contain the RAM, the processor, the video card, and some random cables. And some arctic silver goop.

The box came partially opened. The other half took pictures of the box before we opened it, took everything that was in the box out (all that was left was the arctic silver and the packing supplies), took pictures of THAT, and then called up Newegg. They didn't even want to see the pictures of the proof - they just put in a new order of stuff for us, took care of filing the complaint with USPS (or whoever we ordered from), and shipped us the new stuff within two days.

Since then, except for the occasional ebay buy, we get all of our computer stuff through them.

Fark Newegg. No free shipping to AK or HI but free shipping everywhere else in the US? $46 to ship a monitor? $300 to ship a computer in standard shipping? Fark that. The same monitor was only $10 more on Amazon.com and I did get free shipping. Newegg will never get my business because of its asinine shipping policies.

2009-12-04 02:46:14 PM
My experience with Newegg has been quite positive, save for the fact that every shipping method they offer requires a signature upon delivery & I'm never home.

Many of the reviews I've seen there do include something like "dead on arrival, but newegg gave me a RMA & replaced it without hastle". I bet if they excluded the 1 star ratings, the tag cloud would look a bit more pretty.

$76.00

Newegg's a great company, but that is kindof amusing. Also amusing - it would take maybe 15 minutes of scripting to exclude certain portions of the site..

2009-12-04 02:48:10 PM
I can get certain things shipped overnight for $2 with Newegg. However, I don't get on their website and rant and rave about how great they are. Forums for an online retailer will generally be full of complaints, not praise.

Wow. A screen capture posted on the Consumerist is now front paged. Not news indeed.

vort3xxx: Many of the reviews I've seen there do include something like "dead on arrival, but newegg gave me a RMA & replaced it without hastle". I bet if they excluded the 1 star ratings, the tag cloud would look a bit more pretty.

Look at the reasons why some of the items received a 1. On one item (it was a HD) someone gave it a 1 because it snowed, the UPS guy couldn't get to their house so arrival was delayed. Yeah, that's the fault of the egg. Sometimes people give something a 1 and write a positive review...I guess they don't understand how it all works.

One review I saw on Amazon...it was of a Shaggy CD. I guess they didn't like it because, well, they thought Shaggy was the kid from Scooby Do, not the singer. :P

Is there any shop that doesn't charge more to ship to AK or HI?

Believe it or not, it costs more to ship outside the lower 48. Sorry you live in the middle of nowhere.

It will generally cost $5 or $10 more. I expect this as this is a reasonable increase. Not $300 more. Newegg can suck it.

I'm sure being ignored by two-thirds of one percent of the population, all of whom live at least 1000 miles from anyone in the Lower 48, will put a real hurt on Newegg's bottom line.

Well no surprise, people will always go to greater lengths to biatch than to compliment. IMO you, overall, can't beat newegg.

I just replicated my last order on Newegg, and changed the shipping zip to 99501. UPS ground is $17 more than it is to California ($28 vs $11). What in the world were you ordering that cost $300 to ship?

2009-12-04 02:59:01 PM
I think there's another factor going on here, also. Many tags are going to be more item specific and thus get fewer hits. The bad tags are far more generic and thus will concentrate the hits.

2009-12-04 02:59:29 PM
I've lost my order history. My original newegg account has an e-mail address from an ISP that I haven't used in almost a decade and I can't remember the password. :(
